I am currently reading "Autobiography of a Face" by Lucy Grealy. I'm on page 73. It's a memoir (non-fiction) by Lucy, focusing on her difficulties during childhood and adolescence. She was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer as a pre-teen and had to have part of her jaw removed as well as chemotherapy treatments. When she started middle school, she was outcasted and bullied on a regular basis. This book really delves into her psyche and complex emotions surrounding herself as a human being. I looked her up online, and sadly learned that she died at the age of 39 (overdose) due to her addiction to painkillers as a result of her cancer.

I chose this book because it was recommended in another book I was reading (a teacher book). When I looked it up online, I was impressed with her writing and the beauty of her words.

I just started Twisted by Sara Shepard and I'm on page 28. So far this book is about something bad that happened after all four friends go back together after what bad thing happened to them in the book before this one. (I can't explain it very well since there are no spoilers.) I chose this book after the dramatic ending in the book before this and because Emily Tappy brought it to me:).

i chose to do a book called "retribution" by Sherrilyn Kenyon I am on page 242 and it startes out back in the past, where there is a man named Jess Brady who was a hired killer and gunslinger. he was about to get married one day to the love of his life, Matilda. as he was walking up the stairs to the church, he got shot down by his best friend, bart. Bart also killed the wife's father and the priest and kidnapped the wife. and when Jess awoke he was standing in front of the greek god artemis and she offered him retribution on his best friend, he had to sell his soul for 24 hours to do whatever he wanted to Bart. and in return he had to hunt down these beasts called daimons, and protect humans from them.

Also, Paige even though there isnt much info in your post, i am still curious who the friends are, and what bad thing happened.

ETappy6- I am reading a book called The Power Of Six, by Pittacus Lore. Im only on page 3, but so far it is pretty good. This is the second book in the I am Number Four series, and the reason i choose the book was because the movie was AMAZING. Anyways, the main character in the book is a girl named Marina. She is from another planet called Lorien, and I think it was invaded or something, because she is talking about how she was forced to leave. Anyways, she and her protector Adeline moved place to place, like homeless people until they seatled in Spain. They have been there for eleven years, and it seems like Marina doesn't get outside much, because the only connection to the outside world for her is the internet.....

ETappy6 said...

ETappy6- Ms. Thomas, your book sounds really good but really sad at the same time. I can't imagine going through what Lucy did. That must have been awful, but she made a good story out of the events she suffered through.

PBastings- I loved that book! By far it was the best in the series. Sara Shepard is just such a talented writer, everything is so detailed, I feel like Im really there with Aria, Spencer, Hannah, and Emily.

Right now, I am reading Skeleton Key by Anthony Horowitz. I am currently on page 80. I chose this book because it is the third book in the Alex Rider series, and since the first two were so good, I decided to read this one. It is about Alex Rider, a teenage spy for MI6, the British Secret Intelligence System. He was sent to Wimbledon to spy on someone connected to a suspicious break-in and finds a gang of Chinese people trying to fix the tournament. He finds them out, so now their whole gang wants him dead. Right now in the story, he is sent on another mission to help the CIA, while also trying to escape from the Chinese gang that is following him everywhere, trying to kill him. This book so far is very action packed and exciting.

I am reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling. I am on page 438. This is the final book in the Harry Potter series. It is about Harry's quest to find the parts of Voldemort's soul and destroy them. I am reading this book because last year I saw Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1 and it made me want to read the book. So I started to read it but since the last time I read Harry Potter was in 3rd grade, I was so lost so I reread the whole series. Now I am finally on the final book!

KMcKaig6 said...

ETappy6- Have you read the first book in the series? I didn't really like the movie! Marina sounds weird, did anyone besides her and her protector survive the invasion?

My book I am going to read is Catching Fire by Susan Collins. I chose this book, because last year we read the book that comes before it in the series and it is now one of my favorite books. I am on page 0 and I am hopping to get it some time this week. I also want to read this book because the book is coming to theaters soon. I can not wait to start reading!

I am currently reading the book Scat by Carl Hiaasen. I have a Nook and I am 42% of the way through. Scat is about a class field trip to Black Vine Swamp and their horrid teacher Mrs. Starch goes missing. After the whole school is a little ways into the swamp, they hear a screeching noise. All the teachers being frightened know they have to leave quickly. As they get to school they all realize Mrs. Starch is gone! I chose this book because it was recommended by my family.

I am currently reading Heaven Is for Real by Todd Burpo and I am on page 50. This book is about a four year old, Colton Burpo, whose appendix burst and had been releasing fatal poisoning into is body for five days. This all occurred while the family was taking a trip to celebrate them overcoming injury and illness. It was very ironic that the trip was ended by Colton's illness. Colton had to undergo a life-saving surgery, and while under the anesthesia, he was so close to death he was in heaven watching the surgery take place. The book involves Colton telling his mom and dad, who is a pastor, about his experience in heaven and what he saw there. I decided to read this because I saw Colton and his dad being interviewed on Fox News and it was interesting. Also, my mom said it was an incredible book.

I'm reading "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho. I'm on page 121. This book is about a boy shepard who loves to travel and see the world. The boy one day journeys to the faraway land of Egypt to find the pyramids where the boy was told by a gypsy, an old king and an alchemist that was where he would find his treasures and his personal legend, sort of like a calling; destiny. I chose this book because it's an international bestseller and it has received many good reviews. It's a book that my brother recommended.

The book I am currently read is called "Wanted" by Sara Shepard. I am currently on page 105. This book is kind of hard to not spoil. This book is about the four "Pretty Little Lairs" girls and something big that changes their life. Their best friend Ali was "murdered" in the summer of 7th grade. Then Ali's family releases a BIG secret they have been hiding for a long time. The reason I am reading this book is because this is the 8th book in "The Pretty Little Liars" series.

The book that I am currently reading is The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan. I am only on page 32 but so far it is an incredible book. As the book starts, the main character, Jason, has just woken up on a school bus with a group of other teenagers. However, he has no memory whatsoever and does not remember any of them and does not even know who he himself is. This book quickly gets interesting because in the second chapter, there is already battling and action. I chose this book because I really liked Rick Riordan's other book series, and this one is closely related.

DMaillart5 said...

Andrew-
Wow! That book sounds really interesting but also extremely sad at the same time. I can't imagine what the parents were feeling when the boy told them about what he experienced.

The book I am reading is called The Space Between Trees by Katie Williams. I am currently on page 54. I chose this book because the cover looked really interesting (I’m not going to lie about it!). The book is about how Jonah, Evie’s friend and crush, finds a body in the woods. Evie, the main character, didn’t know who it was at first but later got a call from a childhood friends’ mom. It was Zabet who died, or murdered. So far, there hasn’t been much going on except that the first few days back at school with Zabet’s friends is harsh.

I am currently reading "An Asian Tragedy America and Vietnam" by David Detzer. I'm currently only on page 30 but the book is very informal because it is nonfiction and about the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam war. (Our NHD topic). The book starts off with an ancient tale that represents the Vietnam War. The moral of the story was no matter how powerful you are somethings can not be changed. The author then goes and talks about the history of Vietnam and how the French took control of it. Then the author goes to the cold war and tells the reader how the U.S. made allies with anyone who opposed communism at THE TIME. VIETNAM fell into this category because later on they became communist. The book basically tells you about how Vietnam changed during the gruesome war fought there. I read this book because it relates to my NHD topic and could help when researching my NHD topic.

I am currently reading Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins and I am 27% through the book. ***Spoiler of the first two books*** So far, the book is about Katniss and the people of District 13 trying to overthrow the government and their horrible ways of controlling Panem. Everyone really wants Katniss and her army to win this war, especially because the Capitol is holding Peeta as a prisoner of war. I chose this book because we read The Hunger Games last year for literature circles and it was SO amazing, so I decided to read the rest of the series.

I am currently reading White Fang by Jack London, and have read up to page 23. The books is about two men who are travelling with their mushing dogs all the way to McGurry. The men are forced to travel through the harsh winter conditions, despite their lack of resources. Within the first couple chapters, they discover that a pack of wolves seems to be following them, and no matter where they turn, their howling and glowing eyes follow. I chose this book because it was an intriguing, short read.

I am reading "The Circle Trilogy: Black" by Ted Dekker. I am on page 265. This book is about a young man named Thomas Hunter who is having "dreams" of another world. This world consists of both evil (the black forest) and good (the colored forest.) He is not sure if Earth in prresent day is reality or if the reality is the colored forest. The Roush (oversized white bats) say that what he thought was present day is actually the "histories" and that when he hit his head he created this second world that he dreams about. In the "histories" a new airbourne medicecine from Raison Pharmaceutical turned into a virus called the Raison Strain that killed the entire population in less than three weeks. Thomas thinks that the reason he is having these dreams about the colored forest is because he has to stop the Raison Strain, and he goes through alot of obstacles to do so.

I chose this book because my sister started reading it, but never finished, and my brother said it was a really good book.

I am reading the book Bomb Scare: The History & Future of Nuclear Weapons by Joseph Cirincione. Joseph is the Vice President of the National Security at the Center for American Progress in Washington D.C. He talks about the history behind the invention, the arms race, and the politics behind the nuclear bomb. He talks about the Cold War, how it started and "ended". Also, he gives predictions of the future and backs it up with what happened in the past. He also devotes an entire chapter on the "drivers and barriers" of nuclear proliferation (why countries would want to make bombs and why they wouldn't). This book also shows the histories of the treaties and promises that "ended" the Cold War (also their faults and how we try to fix them today).

I was given this book by Nicole when she was looking for books for me in the library when we were researching. So far this book has been my most reliable and best source of information on my topic.

Oh and I'm on page 115!

I am currently reading Perchance to Dream by Lisa Mantchev I am now on page 143. This is the sequel to Eyes like Stars, in this book Bertie along with Arial the nature spirit from The Tempest and the four fairies from A Midsummer Night’s Dream have left the theatre Illuminata to try to rescue Nate, a pirate from the little mermaid. Nate is a captive of Sedna the sea goddess on account of replacing Bertie. So far in their times away from the Theatre Bertie and Co. have found that “life is certainly not like a play” they have met new people including Bertie’s father. There seems to be a lot of connections between Bertie’s father, the scrimshaw she has come to wear around her neck and Sedna, nevertheless Bertie is determined to succeed in her rescue.

I am currently reading the book Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. I am now on page 46. In the book a girl named Hannah Baker committed suicide. Although before she committed suicide she recorded a set of 13 tapes. On those tapes were reasons why she committed suicide. 13 people would receive the tapes and they would listen to all of them and pass them on to the next person. All 13 people who receive the tapes are in some way the reason why Hannah committed suicide. Right now in the book the tape is with a guy named Clay Jensen. He is confused and doesn’t think the tapes belong with him. He doesn’t feel at all responsible for the death of Hannah. Even though Clay really wants to throw the tapes away and have nothing to do with it, he can’t because if he doesn’t pass the tapes on the next person, someone will release them to the media, and everyone will know that Clay can be held partly responsible for the death of Hannah Baker. This book is a really great book, and it was recommended to me by Ms. J. Thomas.

Kyle: That sounds like an interesting book. It sounds pretty scary though. I don't like books that are horror. I hope you're enjoying your book.

I am currently reading "Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson. So far, I have read to page 7. My book is about an outcast named Melinda and how she called the cops the night of a huge summer party, and crashed it. Now, she has to deal with everyone in high school hating her for 'ruining their fun'. So at school she has no friends and she won't speak of a secret that happened the night of the party. So far, it is a really good book, especially because I love mystery novels.

I chose this book because Paige recommended it to me. I was actually standing by your desk talking to you and Paige when she offered it to me. But, I am so glad she lent me the book:).

I am currently reading Wenny Has Wings by Janet Lee Carey. I am currently on page 7. Wenny Has Wings is fiction book about two siblings who die in a truck accident. They both are killed and find themselves flying around in the afterlife or a place that seems like heaven. Then back in the real world of life the brother is shocked back to life by a CPR machine but his sister could not be saved. Now he writes letters to his sister hoping that wherever she is in the afterlife, she can read them. The book itslf is in journal/diary format. For example: "Day 10- Wenny, It's October 16. That's ten days since I died and came back" And so on. He feels as if he shouldn't be alive when his sister wasn't able to be saved also. He feels like he doesn't deserve to be living again.
I chose this book because my sister read it a while back and she said some pretty good things about it. I myself wanted to read it so I am giving it a shot. And so far, even after reading 7 pages, I am already hooked and I can tell I am going to enjoy reading this.

I am currently reading Torn, by Margaret Peterson Haddix. I am on page 22. What I have read so far is that the main characters, Jonah and Katherine, have just been sent to another point in history after trying to save Virginia Dare in Roanoke in 1600. They have just recently sent to 1611 on Henry Hudson’s ship heading to modern day Canada. As soon as they land JB, the one who sent them back in time, tells them that they lost James Bay, the son of Hudson. So they must learn how to survive without being spotted and wait and hope that James Bay will be found so they can fix history once again. I chose to read this book because I have already read the three books before it in the series and the last one ended in a cliffhanger so I was anxious to begin this one as soon as I could.

I am currently reading the book "Esperanza Rising" by Pam Munoz Ryan, and i am also on page 26. So, far this book is about a young girl named Esperanza who is only 12. And on this particular day she was with her mother and grandmother at their home on a ranch while her father and some of his workers were out fixing one of the fences on the farthest area on the ranch. Her father had not come home after a while so her mother had sent two of Esperanza's brothers to go look for him. They came back later that night and had their two horses and a wagon behind them with something in it that was covered by a blanket. When Esperanza and her mother asked what it was they found out that it was her father, and that he had been ambushed and killed by bandits. So now, Esperanza and her mother have to make the decision wether or not to move to California or not because they can no longer afford their ranch.

I chose this book because i saw the gold novel award on it and so i read the back and it sounded interesting.

I am currently reading "The Thirty-Nine Steps" by John Buchan. I am on page 27. I have seen the movie made in the 30's twice with my Dad and he read the book over the summer. The movie is great and even the second time I watched I could feel the suspense. I knew the book was going to be a little different then the movie and I wanted to see how it changed from a book to a script. The book is about a man, Richard, who just returned from Africa to his hometown of London. Shortly after his return he meets a man from America who tells him about an assassination plot that will happen somewhere in Britain. The informant is found dead the next day in Richards apartment stabbed in the back. Richard is now on the run for murder and is trying to help expose the plot of the Thirty-Nine Steps.

The book that I just started reading is True Believer by Nicholas Sparks, and I am on page 25. The main character is a young man named Jeremy Marsh, and basically he writes for "Scientific American" which is a science magazine that he's a regular columnist in. Jeremy focuses on proving supernatural occurrences and "talents" false. Where I am in the book he is gathering evidence for why a guy, Timothy Clausen, who is a daytime regular that "hears and speaks to spirits" is a total fake. Jeremy is excited and proud because he knows that if he pulls this off it will be his biggest story yet and spark media all over the country, which articles like this do not normally do. I chose this book because I've been a big fan of Nicholas Sparks for a long time, and also, about 2 years ago I tried to get into this book (I read almost none of it) but I just did not really understand it (I think I was too young.) so i decided to try again, and this time I really like it.

I am currently reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and I am on page 25. This is a story of a young boy growing up in Afghanistan starting in the 1970s. This was when the Soviet Occupation began and Amir, the adult narrator, has to live through war and tragedy. This book also focuses on the complicated relationships between a father and son who are nothing alike, and two boys who are like brothers in bond. Later on, he talks about the struggle to adjust to a new culture when he later moves to America.

The book that I am reading is the 14th Clique book which is called, A Tale of Two Pretties, by Lisi Harrison. I'm on page 133. There are 5 main characters, Massie, Alicia, Claire, Kristen, and Dylan. In Massie's life so far, she has to keep a SUPER deep dark secret for a while. She is just waiting to tell someone. Alicia went to see a fortune teller and she finds something out that she doesn't want anybody to know especially Massie. She was the alpha once and it was a disaster, so she likes to be the "wingwoman." With Claire, She also has a secret; but she could tell anyone she wants to. She decides not to though because it would risk her being kicked out of the Pretty Committee. She definitely does not want that to happen. In Kristen's life, she just got some VERY exciting news, which could make or break her friendship and her spot in the Pretty Committee. She got accepted into a very high soccer league called the 'Soccer Sister' It's the best in the country. She has to keep it for the "ah-mazing" alpha, Massie, though. And lastly Dylan had a great vacation with her mom and two sisters. When she gets back her mom has a surprise waiting for her three daughters. She HAS to keep this a definite secret. By law; until her mother's New Year's Yves Party, that she throws every year with all the biggest stars, since she owns a talk-show. This book is mainly about secrets, and I can't wait to find out what happens next!

The reason that I chose this book was because, once I start reading a series of books, I don't like it to be interrupted. All the other thirteen books were good, so I wanted to read this one to see if it can follow up to the rest. And the cover looks very pretty!

Right now I am on page 204 In this book there are five main characters that are all starting high school; their names are Stella, Charlie, Olivia, Wen, and Mo. They don’t fit in at all and no one really notices them. Until one day they all end up together in detention. In detention they started putting together a beat and singing. From then on the music teacher encouraged them to sing at the Halloween Bash because they were really good. They never thought that they would be able to go up against Mudslide Crush, the rival band. Until Stella gathered them all together and said they needed to make something of themselves. If everything went well, this could make them popular. Finally everyone agreed to go through with it; they would open for Mudslide Crush.

Ms. Thomas I forgot to answer the last question.

I chose the book Lemonade Mouth because I saw the movie and I wondered what details the movie left out that was in the book.

I am reading Dark Life by Kat Falls. I'm on page 157. Dark Life is about people who have decided to live underwater because land is too over populated. It is a sci fi adventure book and Ty and Gemma are trying to find gemma's long lost brother while having to put up with a bad gang called the seablite gang. I chose this book because it is a Sunshine state reader book and because adventures are my favorite.

For my book that I am reading, I chose Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl. I have not gotten very far because I have just started the book but it is about three nasty mean farmers who don’t care about anyone or anything other than themselves and Mr. Fox always goes and takes their food. Yet they know it is going on but don’t know how to stop it because Mr. Fox is out smarting the farmers.

I am currently reading the book Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I am on page 37. This book is about the life of a girl who has been constantly overshadowed by her sister's beauty though her inner personality is much better. This book was placed in a time where girls were married to men older than them, the wealthier the better, and could not actually talk to an eligible man first before they are introduced by someone else. The manners shown in this book are very old-fashioned and would be suffocating to women today. The main character, Elizabeth, has caught the attention of a handsome and rich young man with horrible manners for those times which is not exactly good in her case. While her sister has caught the eye of the newest, and most esteemed bachelor in the region, with his two difficult to please sisters. Since I have not gotten very far in this book I can not say very much more than this, but it is interesting to read. I choose this book because it is a classic and my brother's girlfriend saw me finishing Little Women and said that I would like it and she would lend it to me.

Geena that book sounds kind of interesting. I don't like mysteries that much, but I do like books with a little bit of witty sarcasm mixed in and that sounds like one of them. Is this true, or am I way off the mark? I think the title is a good lure because it could be literal or symbolic.
