Blog #9, DUE: Saturday, Nov. 10th

Post the title and author of the book you're currently reading.

Choose a character from your novel and briefly explain who this character is.  What is a book that you think this character would enjoy reading?  Explain why.  Don't give the first, easiest, most obvious answer that pops into your head.  Try to dig a little deeper as to what book this character would enjoy.

The book I am reading is Plus by Veronica Chambers. The book that the main character, Bee, would most likely read would be Running Out of Time by Marget Peterson Haddix. In the book it mentions that Bee loves mystery and dystopian novels, an this book is a little of both. This is a book that fits both Bee's personality and interests.

I am reading Nightshade by Andrea Cremer. The main character, Calla is a Guardian and can transform into a wolf. For us we call her a werewolf, but in the book they're called Guardians. Their lives are controlled, they are told whom they are to be married to, where they live, who will be in their pack, etc. The Keepers, or the Guardians' rulers, basically use them as pawns to obtain their goals. Any rebellion against them is squashed immediatly. So, when Calla is told that her "mate" is to be Renier Laroche, she agrees, but hates the way alpha males control the pack and the alpha female is there to support what they say and not really be heard. Calla is the alpha female, by the way. Calla accepts, but when a boy shows up at school that she saved from a bear attack everything changes. She healed him and revealed to him that she was a wolf. They get together and discover many things, things that will change Calla forever. But Calla becomes torn, she loves both Ren(Renier's nickname) and both the boy she saved, Shay. I think the book the main character, Calla would read would be Tigers Quest by Colleen Houck. Because the main character, Kelsey is also torn between two guys like Calla. Also Calla loves adventure, freedoms, and solving things. Tigers Quest's plot is just that. This is a book that fits Calla's point of view and interests.

I am reading the Death Cure by James Dashner. The main character- Thomas-I think, would love Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J. K. Rowling because Thomas found out about a whole new world-at least after his memory was wiped- and it really stank. Sun flares had ravaged the planet and a deadly disease was running rampant all over the world. no one was safe except for the immunes. Harry discovered a whole new world for the better, where he could get away from his abusing in-laws into a magical world that is paradise instead of a nightmare. He could also relate with Harry because he is a orphan.

KaylaN5: I've never read that book but I have read Running Out of Time. It is really good!

The book that i am reading is Max by James Patterson. One of my characters, Nudge, i believe would love to read Twilight. Nudge has wings genetically engineered into her back, and she just wants to be normal. I think she would like Twilight because she can read about more people who are abnormal and that she is not the only one. She will also see in that book what the normal people think of abnormal people like her.
KaylaN5-
Running Out of Time seems like a good book because i love mysteries and dystopian stories

I am almost done with reading The Scorch Trials by James Dashner. The main character is Thomas, who survived the Maze in the first book, the Maze Runner. He is a glader who is about 16 with no knowledge about his past before he was placed into the maze by WICKED. In the second book, more memories come back to him so he knows a little more about his past. The book I believe he would like to read most would be the book series, A Series of Unfortunate Events because the main characters in those books are orphans, and like them, Thomas is also somewhat "orphan-like" because he has no knowledge of his parents and was taken away by them in order to be part of WICKED's experiments. So, if Thomas read those books, he would know that there are many others like him.

JasunC6 said...

MLangston5: I absolutely love all of James Dashner's books. After I finish this one I am sure I'll have to read the Death Cure since it's the sequel to the Scorch Trials.

The book that I just finished was Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, which is the story of a well-off boy who gets rid of his money, car, job, so he could go and explore. The majority of the book is how the boy goes around North America hitchhiking, and seeing for himself all of the wonders of the world around him. He eventually goes to Alaska to the bush, which is the most dangerous place, which is uninhabited as well. His body is found months later is is identified as Chris McCandless. The book that I think that he would enjoy would be My Side of The Mountain, by Jean George. Both of these books include abandoning civilization and its rules, and having no use of modern technology whatsoever. Both rely completely on the land and see the beauty of nature. They both see a side of nature that no one else seems to see, a more philosophical side of nature. Chris would probably be disappointed that it did not come right out and say it, but he would possibly be able to see it buried beneath the words.

I have recently just started the second book in the Missing book series. It is Sent by Margaret Peterson Haddix; (which is a great book already!) One of the characters, Katherine is the main character's, (Jonah) sister. I think the book that she would most likely enjoy reading is: A Promise Kept, by Rachel L. Nota. This is a book about a brother and sister bond. In the book that i am reading now, Katherine is always messing with her brother, but we all know that she secretly loves him as a brother.

In my book, the ring of Solomon, by Jonathan Stroud, one of the characters, a djinni named Bartimaeus, would enjoy reading the book "Enders Game" because in the book, the human race is almost destroyed, and Bartimaeus would enjoy the human suffureing. Bartimaeus, being a djinni, is summoned by a magician to be that magicians slave. Most spirits dislike this, and Bartimaeus is no exception, trying to kill all of his masters so he can escape the world of mortals, so human deaths would mean fewer magicians to enslave him.

MLangston5- That book is amazing! As well as the rest of the series!

I am reading a Non- Fiction book called Dance Anecdotes Stories from the Worlds of Ballet, Broadway, the Ballroom, and Modern Dance by Mindy Aloff. One of the people in the book is Marie Taglioni, the great ballerina and first dancer to wear point shoes ever. Marie Taglioni was the daughter of a great coreographer. She was the Principal pupil of her dance school, and the great ballet La Sylphide was in part created for her. I think if she were still alive today she would read The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Laroux. I think she would likely read this because not only is it a great story but there is a lot of ballet talk in that book. She coming from a ballet/French back ground would really understand the story. In one of the reviews for that book, it said tht ony perofrmers can truley relate to this Fantastic thriller of love, music, and ballet! So I think that Marie Taglioni would like that book because she would be able to relate to the characters, understand the Feench and ballet terminology, and it would be a great read for her and anyone who loves plays and musicals.

I am currently reading Extras by Scott Westerfeld. The main character in my book is Aya. Aya is a kicker with a really high face rank, in the 600,000s. By the way, a kicker is someone who ‘kicks’ stories and starts lots of rumors. I think she would like to read The Witch and The Wizard by James Patterson. The Witch and The Wizard is about a sister and a brother who are completely ruled by the New Order. Aya is also ruled by the Mind-Rain and all the new cliques. Both the books are about a dystopia and I think Aya would like to read about a dystopia even worse than hers.

I am currently reading the book Inkspell by Cornelia Funke. The main character Meggie is a young girl around the age of thirteen who loves to read. For as long as she can remember she has been surrounded by books. Her father is a “book doctor” as she says. In the first book her and her family had to battle against the evil Capricorn and his men who were read out of the book Inkheart by her father. The book(s) that Meggie would want to read would most likely be the Harry Potter series. She loves book with action and magic in them, but she hates ones with unhappy ending (like that of the story Inkheart). Harry Potter just happens to have all these characteristics and more, so it would be the perfect book for her.

The book I'm currently reading 1984 by George Orwell. A book the main character, Winston, would like to read would be The Giver by Lois Lowry. I think Winston would like this book because Jonas, the main character in The Giver, has similar feelings to himself. Winston is confused on what he thinks of the society he lives in. He hates Big Brother, the man who made things the way they are, but he also feels like Big Brother is doing the right thing. In the Giver, Jonas has conflicting opinions of his society. It's were he grew up and all he's ever known but he also knows its not how things are supposed to be. Winston would like this book because he feels like he's the only one in his situation. Reading the giver would help him see he's not alone.

MLangson5: The title of the book sounds really interesting! The book sounds really good too!

I'm reading The Siege of Macindaw by John Flanagan, part of the Ranger's Apprentice Series. Will Treaty the main character is a Ranger in this book, and the setting is a medieval-ish forestry sort of environment. Rangers are guys that train at an early age to became expert archers with longbows, advisers of the King, and semi-diplomats. Will is unique to this "Ranger Corps" because unlike the rest of them who are generally grim, wise, and mature, he is speratical, jokes a lot, creative, and good-humored. He plays musical instruments and once acted as a jongleur so the kind of book i suppose he would read would reflect these differences from the rest of the Rangers. I think he would pick a comedy sort of book with the main character being an underdog. I think a choice for him might be a comic (it can fit both of the previous categories) like Spiderman.

ABerryman5: That sounds like a book my guy might read :P. Good job on details and word choice i guess, and book choice sounds interesting.

MLangston5: Was the disease like ZOMBIES?~~~ that would be pretty cool. Also your different books are similar because they are both fixing their environment from evil things.

Book: Dr. Franklin's Island
Author: Ann Halam

The main character in my book is Semi. Semi is kind-of a science geek, and is entered in this science fair contest, which she wins. She is one of 37 contestant winners who will be going to Equador and the Galapagos Islands for 3 weeks for a wildlife conservation trip. But, on the way there, their plane crashes: leaving only Semi and 2 other kids alive. Semi and her newfound friends, Miranda and Arnie, are struggling to survive on the island that they washed up on. The book that I think Semi would love to read would be Dork Diaries by Rachel Russel. I think Semi would love this book because Nikki(the main character) is never faced with any HUGE problems like being stranded on an island. Nikki's only problem is her parents being an embarrasment and a snooty mean girl. To me, Semi, would rather be faced with those problems than being trapped on an island.

Book: The Mark of Athena
Author: Rick Riordain
I think that if Annabeth was to read a book, it would need to be challenging. After all, her mother is the goddess of Wisdom. She also likes Greek writing. With these two facts taken into account, I think that the perfect book for Annabeth is Homer’s, the Iliad. This story is interesting and exciting. I think it would be even cooler for her to read it, because in her world, that would have really happened. And the thing that i think is even more funny is that Annabeth has never read this book before in her life.

@MLangston: Great idea Molly, I think that character would fit Harry Potter very nicely.

The book I am reading is Point of Retreat by Colleen Hoover. The main character is Will and he is 22 years old. Both of his parents died in a car wreck so he is raising his 9 year old brother. A girl named Layken moves from Texas right across the street from him in Michigan. This is the second book so I can't explain what happens in this book without giving away the first one. It is basically about them trying to be together. I think a book that Will would enjoy reading is the prequel to this one because it is from Layken's point of view. I think he would like to read it because he would finally understand where she is coming from and how she feels exactly. Plus it would explain some of the crazy things that she did and said to him. While by the time the second book's time frame rolls around they don't really talk too much about what happend in the first one, I think he would still like to read it so he can put some puzzle pieces together about what Layken went through.

AMeling5: Ender's Game was really good!

I am currently reading Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech. The main character, Sal, is a thirteen year old girl who goes on a journey with her grandparents to be reunited with her mother. On the road trip Sal tells her grandparents a story about a girl named Phoebe who became her friend. I think the main character in my book would enjoy reading The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom. She would enjoy reading this book because her mother left her and her father when she was very young. I think this book would give her an understanding of life in general. I think she would have great emotions and feelings to this book because she hasn't seen her mother in years. Also, Sal is an open minded girl who likes to understand things in detail.

I am reading Finale by Becca Fitzpatrick. In this book I think Nora, the main character, would read Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. Nora is a "normal" teenage girl, that would read the same books most girls would. Twilight is one of the most popular books, and Nora isn't a character that would like to read, so she would only read books that were well known. Most likely she would watch a movie rather then read a good book.

I am reading Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. Clay is a highschooler who everyone at school describes as "perfect". No one can think of a single bad thing he has done or a single bad grade he has gotten (though he admits he can think of a few). He liked a girl named Hannah, who had killed herself. I think he would enjoy reading a sad book (well I guess it would be considered a play, but it has been turned into a book) such as Romeo and Juliet. I think he would like to read a book like this because when a box of tapes turns up at his door, his world is turned upside down. He spends a whole night listening to them, but they affect his mood in an extremely negative way. He becomes slightly depressed just hearing what each of the tapes has to say. Because of this, I think he would like a sad story, and Romeo and Juliet can fit that description.

JChoi6: That book sounds good, is it about the "Salem Which Trials", or is it similar, at least?

The book I am currently reading is, Hunger Games, by Susan Collins. The main character in this book is Katniss Everdeen. The Hunger Games is about Katniss trying to survive in the 74th anual Hunger Games. Also, Katniss is stuck choosing between Gale, who she had known her whole life and who was her bestfriend, or Peeta Melark, the boy from District 12 who also got selected to play in the 74th0 Hunger Games. I think that Katniss would like to read the book, Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer because in this book the main charater Bella Swan has to pick between one of her best friends that she had known her whole life, Jacob or a guy she just met, Edward Collins. I think she would like to read this book because she is going through the same thing that Bella is and she could relate to her with choosing who she should let be the love of their life.

This week I am reading Feed by M.T. Anderson. One of the characters in this book is Violet. Violet is a girl who was visiting the moon when she met Titus and his friends, Link, Marty, Calista, Loga, and Quendy, who were visiting the moon for their Spring Break. She and her new friends were sent to the hospital and had to have their feeds disconneted, a device in their bodies that helps them chat without talking, decide whether they should buy something or not, etc., when they were touched by a strange old man the night before and started chanting "We enter a time of calamity". A book that I think that Violet would enjoy would be Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life by Wendy Mass. I think that Violet would enjoy reading this book because everything in it is the opposite of her world and this would make the book interesting to her. This setting of this book is opposite to her world because in the world that Violet lives in, everyone has a feed, or a computer inside of their bodies and they don't use their hands and eyes while in Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life, computers are available to people outside of their bodies and they still use their hands and eyes. Violet would also read this book because the main character, Jeremy, is a regular teenage boy and Violet in Feed said that she wanted to be like a normal person and have a real life. I think that because both Violet and Jeremy have two different perspectives on what "normal" means, Violet would enjoy reading Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life, which is from Jeremy's perspective, where Jeremy would describe certain things as normal that are not normal to Violet and this would make the book interesting for her.

The book I am reading is Take Me To The River by Will Hobbs. Main character, Dylan and his cousin Rio are taking an exciting river trip down the bleak canyons of the Rio Grande along the Texas-Mexico border. I think Dylan would want to read Hatchet, by Gary Paulson. Dylan enjoys an adventure; which is why he's taking the 10 day river-trip, and he likes the thought of being able to survive off the land, like Hatchet's main character, Brian, and like Dylan's actual cousin Rio. Dylan would also probably appreciate a survival story because it seems as if Dylan might become one.

I am reading the Carnival os Souls by Melissa Marr. The main character in my book is Aya, enters a competition called the Marchosias’ Competition in which they fight to the death. The one who stands living at the end is granted a place in the elite ruling caste. Aya enters this competition because she wants to earn the power and respect that she deserves, but is denied to her being a woman.I think a book that Aya would enjoy reading is "A Child Called It" By Dave Pelzer. A Child Called is a non-fiction book about the author himself, who as a child had no respect from his mother. In Carnival of Souls, Aya says that she would like to earn the respect that she should have as a human being. In a Child Called it, Dave Pelzer feels the same way, but is not granted his wish. Though I'm now sure if Aya does earn the respect that she desires, I know that Dave Pelzer did not as a child from his mother. I feel that Aya would enjoy this book because it could relate to her, and show her how bad things could actually be without the respects needed as humans.

I am currently reading Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life by Wendy Mass. The main character Jeremy is a very conserved person. I think that Jeremy might like to read Found by Margaret Petterson Haddix. I think Jeremy would enjoy this book because Jeremy is trying to solve the mystery of where the keys to a highly important box went. In the book Found, the kids are getting mysterious notes and trying to figure out what they mean. Also, Jeremy is very insterested in science and space. The book Found features a time machine which Jeremy may seek interest in.

In my book, Alex Cross's Trial by James Patterson,I choose Alex Cross. A book I think that Alex Cross would enjoy would be Chasing Lincoln's Killer by James L. Swanson. I think he would like this book because it would be pretty relatable to his life. Chasing Lincoln's Killer relates to Alex Cross's life because both his life and the book involve one man hunting down the killer of one of their close siblings. Both the book and Alex Cross's life displays that theme. That is why I think that Alex Cross would like to read Chasing Lincoln's Killer by James L. Swanson because he would be able to feel live emotions throughout the book.

I am currently reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Dill, a new neighbor and friend to Scout and Jem, has a passion for plays. Dill has seen lots of plays and memorizes and savors each of them. Dill visits the theater often and loves to read just as often. In fact, one of the first things he said to Jem and Scout was that he knew how to read. I think Dill would enjoy the works of William Shakespeare because of his passion of plays and literature. He would especially enjoy the Romeo and Juliet tragedy. He would enjoy it because of its uniqueness and the fact that it’s a story and a play. Dill is curious and asks lots of questions, so he would enjoy how different Romeo and Juliet is from the other plays he has seen and would pay close attention to and cherish this one.

In Fire by Christen Cashore, the main character is Fire. Fire is a unique being who has the astonishing ability to control minds. The novel describes Fire as a beautiful lady with bright red hair and strands of gold. Currently in the story, Fire is dreading the thought of becoming like her wicked father, the late Cansrel. Cansrel took advantage of innocent people and consequently brought about their misery. I believe Fire would like to read a book about someone enduring the same conflict. Harry Potter would be a perfect read. Harry is afraid that because a part of the malevolent Lord Voldemort is in him, he will evolve into his enemy’s evil self. From this series Fire could learn and understand that there is hope to be her own person.

In Mozart Season a 12 year old girl prodigy has to compete in a violin competition. I think she would read it because she could relate to the character being a cello player and a prodigy as well.

But the main thing is that they are on a quest to stop a evil snake trying to destroy the sun god Ra. This book would give him insightful information about this snake and myths about how to stop it. The book I am reading is Elephant Run by Roland Smith. The main character in this novel is Nick Freestone. He lives with his mother in London until one fateful night bombs are dropped on their apartment building and the whole building collapses, leaving him and his mom with nothing. A couple months after he was born Nick's parents got a divorce and his dad moved to Burma. Since his house was bombed Nick's mom sends him off to Burma with his dad where he becomes extremely interested in elephants and learns about the culture there and, most importantly, about the Japanese soldiers. This causes Nick to become highly interested in the way of life in the village and he even has to go through it which puts him and his father in danger once the soldiers start to take over. A good book that would fit Nick's personality, interests, and life events would be Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate. Nick would enjoy this book because it is about a young boy who moved from Africa to America and experiences snow for the first time, taking it in as a wonderful place but you soon get to know that the young boy lost everyone in his family except his mother and now he must go find and take her back from the soldiers/men that took her. Also Nick had a love for elephants and the main character in Home of the Brave was from Africa so he has very much background knowledge on them.

I think that Katniss could relate to him and that sometimes, you read books and find how you relate to a certain character. In the book, like Katniss, Percy also had family issues and only had one parent. Katniss is also a very curious person so I think she would like an adveenturous, yet mysterious story.
