Blog #6, DUE: October 7th, 2011

We have been learning about heroic efforts made by individuals and groups during the Civil Rights movement.

Think of a heroic person and/or a heroic incident in your novel. Tell us about it using specifics.

Remember to always post title, author, and page #.

(Reminder: The end of the 1st nine weeks is approaching! You need to have read TWO books during the 1st quarter. Talk to me if you have any questions.)

I have just finished reading the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Since I finished Retribution last week, I started reading this one and I couldn't put it down. It was so good!

The most heroic person in my book, is Katniss. She risks her life to get medicine for her friend and nurses him back to health. also, people are constantly trying to kill one another.

and I have to wait to comment on somebody else's post

I am currently on page 96 in Catch a Tiger by the Toe by Ellen Levine. I would have to say that the main character in my book is heroic; she lies and in a way leads a fake life in order to protect her family. My book takes place in the 1950s during the red scare and her parents are communists, although sometimes she is very anger at them because of what she has to do she still stands by them. In the last chapter there was an article in the news paper reveling her family was communist she was shunned at her school and was kicked off the school news paper. But instead of giving up she demanded for a trial of her own and convinced the committee to let her back on the paper.

I love that book it was the one I read in Mrs. Chesires Lit circles last year.

I just finished reading my book Crash Into Me last by Albert Borris last night.

Honestly, each of the characters in my book seem like wimps. But really each of them appears weak, but is actually very strong on the inside, even though they don't know it since they've each tried to commit suicide. But the main character that narrates the story barely has any strength to being with, but slowly he gains more without realizing it on the road trip. At first he cares about nothing and feels no emotion but sadness. Hes never happy and hurts himself to feel something because when he was a child he thought he did something and it scarred him forever. But in the end of the book he pretends to shoot himself to waste the bullets so his friends won't kill themselves. He missed though and that bullet just grazing his head made everyone realize that he and everyone else actually feel something again, that they actually care about one another, and they don't want to die, they wanted something to love and understand them.

i LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, that book!! It's amazingly amazing! I couldn't stop reading it for two days. Even through school. . .

I just started and then finished reading a book for my topic called Project Apollo by Ray Spangenburg and Kit Moser.

I would have to say if there would be a hero in my book it would be Neil Armstrong. He was the first man to walk on the moon. This was a very big risk because he did not what could possibly happen. The rock could randomly collapse while underneath him or the oxygen tank could explode. This was some very big risks that he had to take, and they paid off.

You always seem to have interesting books...where do you hear/learn about them?

i am currently reading Skeleton Key by Anthony horowitz. i am on page 237. i would say that my main charecter, Alex Rider, is heroic because he is 14 and his is serving his country as a spy. He has also done many heroic like saving a girl on a train while on a horse, or just stopping people who are doing crimes. Thats why he is heroic.

I'm reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and I am on page 48.
There isn't really a heroic person in this book right now, since it's a realistic fiction. One heroic incident would be when Hassan, the main character, Amir's, best friend or servant-it's first person, Amir hasn't decided yet-stood up to a bully named Assef and faced him with his slingshot when he was scared out of his mind.

Knipper6 said...

bridget~Is that book historically accurate? like did that really happen or is that a made up family? ALSO(!!!!!!) are you aware you put anger instead of angry??? (teehee)

In my book the Lost Hero by Rick Riordan I am on page 84. The main character Jason shows heroic attributes quite often. The most heroic effort he showed was at the Grande Canyons Skywalk where he fought off three sky spirits off. He fought against two off them slicing both in half with his double sided blade. The creatures were reduced to dust since creatures of that sort cannot truly die. Then the third try to take him to the home of the venti or sky spirits where he would be sloughtered yet his friend Piper talked the creature saving Jason yet getting her thrown off the edge where she fell spiraling down into the Grand Canyon. Jason decided to make the courageous move to dive in after her and save her yet I'm not going to say whether or not it was succesful because that would ruin part if the book.

Knipper- That is one of my all time favorite book series that and the Percy Jackson series you should try reading the Percy Jackson series if you hadn't all ready.

That book was great, I can't wait for the next one to come out this month.
That book is the best one for this blog! Even the title have the word hero in it. The Heroes of Olympus: Book 1, The Lost Hero.

In my book Catching Fire by: Suzanne Collins I just finished the book. In my book I feel like the most heroic character would be Gale. Gale will stand up for what he believes in, even if he gets punished by the capital. In one incident it was to run away with Katniss or possible die in a uprising of district 12. Gale chose the uprising instead of going to be safe in the wild. I think that if Gale made that choice he is very brave and I feel that he is the hero of this book.

CBassett6 said...

Tucker ~ That is one of my all time favourite book(s) it is very hard to choose my absolute favourite book but that has to be on my top ten list. I read the Percy Jackson series because of the very nicley coloured cover. Sometimes I judge a book by the cover. Oops.

I just finished reading Rangers Apprentice The Ruins of Gorlan by John Flanagan. The most heroic person in the book is Will. He is only fifteen when he and his master hunt down two Kalakara. It took nine knights before to kill one and only one survived. He is heroic because he fights the one of the two single handed knowing that he could die in just seconds. That is why Will is the most heroic character in the the book.

Kyle I really liked the Hunger Games and I agree that what she did was very heroic.

I finished Scat by Carl Hiaasen on page 239 and have not yet gotten my next book. Well not that many heroic aspects take place in my book but the only one I can think of is when Mrs. Starch the missing biology teacher got caught in a fire while trying to get a kids medication. The childs name was Libby and she was the hero in this scene because Mrs. Starch the MISSING teacher went to her house and left the medication on the ront porch and left it with a note. If it hadn't been for Libby's meds no one wpuld have known that Mrs. strach was okay.

Kyle~ i almost boaght that book on sale at Borders but didn't is it good? I also read Unwind so I don't know anything about it!

Monica~ It suprises me that you aren't reading the Pretty Little Liar books again for the 50th time now!

My book is The Lying Game, by Sara Shepard, and I am on page 201. A heroic person in my book would be Emma. I think she is heroic because after finding out her secret twin sister Sutton was murdered, she went to find out who did it to her, and what happened, even though it puts her own life endangered.

Knipper6- I remember last year that was one of the books for our lit circles. I think almost everyone who read it loved it.

I just finished After by Amy Erfaw. It was a pretty good book, however, it is a difficult one to incorporate in this question. None of the main characters are very heroic in any way. Devon abandoned her baby in a trash can, leaving it to suffocate. Devon's mother didn't support Devon in any way. Dom would lie just to win her case. That's why, if I had to pick one heroic character, I would pick Mrs. Coughran. She helped Devon adjust to life in the Juvenile Detention hall, and even offered to help improve her studies by giving her more difficult work.

Christie- I agree that Gale is a hero, but is he more heroic that Peeta? The guy who would risk everything for Katniss, even if it meant his life was in danger? The one who loved her unconditionally? Just stating my opinion. (:

I am almost done reading Cause of Death by Patricia Cornwell. I am on page 157.
I believe that the most heroic individual in my book would be the main character. I think she is most heroic because she (the crime scene investigator/detective) is striving to solve the mystery of what happened at the scene of the crime of the man drowning. Yes, the other investigators are also helpful and caring but she is leading the investigations so thus she seems the most heroic.
Kyle- That is a great book! Retribution? Don't think I have ever heard of it.
Bridgette- Wow that book sounds really intense and deep. It really goes along with what we were focusing on in class. Sounds like a good informational type book.

I have just finished reading the book The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. This book is all about friendship and betrayal, and how they intertwine. Although there were many, the one person who always seemed to be the Hero was Hassan. Hassan was the main character Amir's best friend, along with his servant. Hassan was always extremely brave and was loyal to Amir to no end. For instance, Hassan took the beating for Amir's mistakes every time Amir was in trouble.

As I said in my post, I just finished that book! I think you are going to really like it and see many more heroic elements in it!

I just finished Silent Spring by Rachel Carson. Since it was non-fiction, there is no "characters". Though, Rachel Carson, the author, could definitely be considered a heroic person. She brought our "failing" environment to our attention in a way that was very intense. Nobody missed what she had wrote, and she supplied many statistics that even changed the way our government thought. Rachel Carson put together many specific details about the environmental crisis that pieced together one very big statement. I think she qualifies as a "hero", because as many people have said, Silent Spring launched the environmental movement.

I just finished reading The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart. A heroic incident in this book is when Constance risks losing her own memory to save her friends'. She chooses to stay in that position even though she could have gotten out whenever she wanted to. It was sort of a surprise, because everyone thinks she is a burden.

Knipper,
I have heard so many good things about that series, but I haven't read it yet. I hope you're reading the next one!

That sounds like an amazing book, and might even relate to your topic. You always have really interesting books like this...where do you find them?

I am reading the book The Dead of Night by John Marsden and I'm on page 24. The hero so far in my book is Homer, one of the main characters. Homer is very strong and after the fighter jets landed in his backyard, he took charge of the group of his friends trying to survive. Homer is trying hard to show that he is the best for the leadership position because other members of the group think another member might be a better leader. The book is full of adventure, and lots of hiding, under the control of Homer.

JChasse5- Wow that sounds like a spectacular book. I think I would like it. In addition, I believe it would be cool to become a spy at the age of 14. That would be really exciting.

I am reading Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins and I'm on page 360.
*SPOILER*

In my book, they are in an arena and are forced to kill each other. The last time they were in the arena one main character Peeta was doing everything to protect the main character Katniss, and by defining the laws of their country, they both survived and are back in the arena. This time Katniss thought that Peeta would be the better person to live so she's doing everything she can to protect Peeta and bring him home.

Kyle, I am reading the second book and it's the same way. It's truly extravagant.

Tucker, that book is also spectacular and i can't wait for the next book to come out!

I am reading The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien. I am on page 85.
This book is a contribution towards all of the men who fought in Vietnam to defend our country, United States. Believe it or not, the men carried hundreds pounds, between their back and arm strength, and were still able to defend themselves and others. The main character, First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross, does play a large role in this book, plot wise, but is not the most 'heroic'. In my opinion, every being who fought in the war was heroic. One person that stood out to me was a man by the name of Kiowa. He was a soldier who witnessed the falling of a friend. In front of his eyes, Ted Lavender, shot! Imagine loving someone like a brother and having him killed right in front of you? Also factor in the other devastating tragedies, and think: this was one of thousands who was killed in the war. He had such great courage to travel on and it really inspired me. This book is amazing and I cannot wait to finish it.

KGraetz5 said...

Hunter ~ I can tell why you chose that to be heroic. I takes a lot of courage to be able to chose someone else over yourself. Great job!!

DRowe5 said...

I am currently reading the book Dark Life and I am on page 25. Judging from the first chapter, the hero in this book would probably be the main character, Ty. He is from underwater and lives in the subsea. One day he meets a Topsider named Gemma, who lives on land and is searching for her brother underwater. They meet in an abandoned submarine and a group of bandits tries to come in. Ty holds off the bandits so Gemma can escape, then becomes free himself. Next, they find Gemma's submarine, which she lost, and ride away from the bandits. Ty is a hero because he fended of the criminals and helped Gemma escape from them.

DRowe5 said...

Tucker, I agree with you, Jason was definititely the most heroic character, although the other two main characters were heroic in different kinds of ways. I also like how you ended your post with a cliffhanger. Nice work!

DMaillart5 said...

The book I just started is Eagle Strike by Rick Riordan and I am on page 45. Already something heroic has happened. The heroic incident was when a man known as Hunter fired a bullet to kill a black widow that was on another mans neck and was about to bite him. As Hunter shot the spider off of the mans neck, the same bullet also went on to kill a gang leader and drug dealer known as the Commander.

DMaillart5 said...

I am reading the book "Heat" by Mike Lupica and it was been an incredible book so far. I am on page 78.
A heroic incident in this book was at the very beginning when the main character Michael Arroyo was simply practicing pitching on a baseball field in the Bronx in New York City. All of a sudden, he spots a person racing across the fresh-cut green grass in the outfield and he notices 2 policemen chasing after this person. He sees the person running with a woman's purse in his hand and Michael's first instinct is to throw the baseball. Michael hurls the baseball as far and fast as he could and hits the person spot-on in the head. This was a heroic incident carried out by Michael because he assisted the cops in capturing a criminal. Also, it was heroic because he saved a lady’s, specifically Mrs. Cora's, purse. Mrs. Cora is a heroic person in the book because she is an incredible assistance for Michael and his 17 year-old brother Carlos. The siblings' dad died 1 year ago and if somebody found this out, they would be up for adoption and possibly split up from one another. Mrs. Cora performs heroic deeds by keeping the father's death a secret to keep the boys together and acting as the children's family and visiting and spending time with them.

NTorto6 (Nii Soja)-
That books sounds interesting and you are only describing it after 24 pages! I agree; that sounds like an extremely heroic deed of Homer by taking charge and trying to keep him and his friends alive. I believe I would like that book, and it is very risky of him to take on the challenge of being the leader of the group, but he would turn out an even greater hero if successful.

RFrangie5 said...

After I finished the first book of the series, I am now on to the second out of three. My book is May Bird: Among the Stars by Jodi Lynn Anderson and I am currently on page 30. A heroic person in my book is May Bird, she is a Live One (still alive) in the Ever After who is leading group of ghosts and specters to their destination while she is being watched and chased by powerful spirits in the Ever After. This is a very difficult task because Live Ones were banished and if she is not careful she could be sucked into nothingness by the Bogey. In the last book there was many heroic incidents involving May but so far in the next book there hasn't been any.

~HRoss5- You are so close to bein done! Isn't it amazing! Hope you like the ending! (even though you will!)

I am reading the book "Richard Nixon: A Political Life" by Richard M. Pious. I am on page 3. In my novel, in my opinion, one of the heroic events that happened was when Nixon resigned because it was the best for the people that he resigned. He also resigned for other reasons, but this reason i think is heroic. He was being heroic for the people by resigning for the better of them.

MJempson6 said...

ETappy6 - I have read that book too, and I also think that Emma was a heroic person!

I am reading Flashpoints; The Cuban Missile Crisis by John Griffiths. I am currently on page 43. Because this book is a non-fiction book, there are no main characters in the book. But, a heroic incident was when Cuban exiles attempted to invade Cuba and take down Castro and his government. Although the invasion was a total failure the exiles fought valiantly and were outnumbered greatly. The exiles had no help from the Americans as they were promised.

The title of my book is Heaven is for real by Todd Burpo and Lynn Vincent. And I am currently on page 75. I think one person who was very heroic in my book was the surgeon because he saved the little boys life and he stopped the boy from dieing even though the kid did die he still came back to life.

LSakalla6 said...

My book is Wake bye Lisa McMann and I just finished reading the book! The heroic person in the book to Janie, the main character, is the grandma at the elderly home. Janie works part-time at the elderly home and the grandma was like Janie's "second" grandma. The thing that shocks her is before the grandma passes away she leaves a note for Janie by her nightstand. The note read that the grandma also had the same curse that Janie had, about being sucked into peoples’ dreams. In the note she was telling Janie, not to give up and the curse can do more than Janie ever thought. This is like the plot of the book and throughout the book how Janie is trying to figure out what the grandma meant, by her note.

I heard that book was good! do you like it so far?

I am (still) reading Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins and I am 60% of the way through the book.

A heroic person in my book would most definitely be Katniss, the main character. She is now the leader of her "team" and is fighting against the Capitol, which has very powerful people. Katniss is sort of the Capitol's target, and for her to risk her live even more by going at war with them shows that she is reallly heroic.

Kyle- that book is my favorite in the series. I agree that Katniss is the most heroic.

LPaxton5 said...

Paige: That book sounds really great! I definitely think your main character was a hero because not only did he (indirectly) save his friend's lives, but really, he made them WANT to keep living, and that's huge.

I am still reading Echoes of Combat: The Vietnam War in American Memory by Fred Turner and I am on page 102. While many military men show heroic actions in everything they do, in those book one man in particular, Robert Mason, stuck out to me. This man wrote a memoir, Chickenhawk, and a sequel, Chickenhawk: Back in the World, about his experiences as an Army helicopter pilot in South Vietnam.Day by day he was struck with terrifying images and gruesome beatings happening right below him. Even after facing dozens of near death situations, Mason still continued his job. Unfortunately, he and 40% of the men in Vietnam suffered PTSD. His consistency is why he is a hero.

I am currently reading Shooting Star: The Brief Arc of Joe McCarthy by Tom wicker and I am on page 30.

The heroic person in my book right now would be Joseph McCarthy. He gave a speech about the communists in America and how they were in the State Department. From there he wanted to get rid of the communists so they didn’t start taking over America. I think McCarthy was brave to make an accusation like that. As well as for him to take on this big project of ridding America of communists.

Katy- That book sounds like it really makes you think about how thankful we should be that we don't have to suffer through any of those hardships.

The name of my book is Beastly, by Alex Flinn and I am on page 87. So far, there really hasn't been any heroes, because Kyle is still looking for someone to break Kendra's spell to make him look normal again. But, by using context clues, and inferring in my book, I think Linda is going to be the girl that Kyle falls in love with. She will probably end-up being his 'hero'.

I am on page 148 of Bystander by James Preller. In my book the main character Eric moves to Bellport where a popular kid took him under his wing. But Eric soon finds out that Griffin is a theif and a bully, even to his friends. When Eric sees Griffin beat up a boy named David who wants to be a part of the popular group, Eric tries to talk to Griffins friends to tell them about how the can stand up for Griffin's victims, and he talks to the victim to try to tell him that he doesn't have to put up with the bullying. This was very brave and heroic of Eric.

Knipper6- I loved that series! I read that book in one day. Katniss is so brave, I could never be as brave as her. I can't believe she risked her life for her sister. That is just so brave and amazing. I'm too big of a coward to do it! But if I really had to I probably would.....

I am on page 113 of the book i am reading by David Dexter. A heroic person in my novel would have to be the people of Vietnam during the war. Each day they were under fear of being bombed and killed for no reason other that a conflict between to parties. They are heroes because they helped each other out by doing things like providing medical care for those injured by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. They also helped hurt army personal. This shows a tremendous amount of kindness because military personal are the people who were killing there friends and families.

KlenckJ5 said...
