My book: Mocking Jay
Author: Suzanne Collins

1) I feel that katniss is very much like me in a few ways, we are both very independent and strong willed. I feel like this is a major play in the book, if Katniss was weak and not very strong she would not survive.

2) I feel like this book really connects to the war in Afghanistan and how every day people go out and fight to protect the US. Then in the book the tributes are fighting to protect their districts.

Add on to previous post question 1) I think that she is just very relaxed at times when I would be very calm even if the situation is not very pleasant to be in. We both are ver awkward and hate to dress up in dresses it’s just not our taste at all.

1) I feel that Will is like me because even if he is a teenager going up against grown men he still stands up for somebody's rights and protection

2) This book connects to the world because it's like when a country hurts your own country's people tension builds and war could break loose like in 9/11.

My book is The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan, and I'm currently on page 398.
1.) In my book, the main characters are in the sixth cohort, which is kind of the odd-one-out. They are all demigods, as is everyone else at Camp Jupiter, but the three of them, Percy, Hazel, and Frank, are in an odd situation were they are considered "bad luck". I'm not in that situation, but Iris, a goddess, feels bad that no one wants to help them on their mission, so she takes the initiative to do so herself. I always feel bad for those in that situation, so I try to be helpful.
2.) Considering the characters are all demigods, gods, and monsters, it is hard to really relate it to real life. Though every demigod does not know their godly parent until a certain age. Many kids don't know who one of their parents are, and are waiting anxiously to see if they wil ever find them. Sometimes it doesn't work like that, and as Frank experienced in the book, he doesn't know who his parent is when everyone else does.

I think you mean to say that because of the attacks of 9/11 tensions built and then war happened. Not that their own country attacked it's self, like a civil war. I totally agree with how this happens sometimes, but how does it relate to your book?

Cbassett6 said...

Jared ~ why do you think the Will caracter is like you? I am confused, explain please!

I am reading After by Amy Efaw and I think if it were in actual book format I'd be on page 38, but its on my NOOK so i have no idea how accurate I am.
1.) At the beginning before I knew that Devon, the main character (she is a girl)did anything, I was a lot like her in the way where she just wanted to stay home from school and was tired and laying on the couch. But I don't exactly feel that way anymore. . .
2.) But a connection from the book to the world would be the fact that shes pregnant. A lot of teenage girls now days have children as mistakes at a young age. There are also shows representing this like Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant. But she does NOT take care of her child like that!!

pbasting6 said...

Christy-
I agree with your connection to Katniss and you!

And if she weren't strong and independent like a certain wannabe vampire girlfriend we've all heard of, then the story would be lifeless!

My book: Just Listen
Author: Sarah Dessen
Page: (going to post with comments)

1.) My connection with my book would be that the main character Annabell is known as the girl who has everything, until one summer, it all unravels right in front of her face. Everybody thinks that there is nothing wrong with her life, and she is ALWAYS there to help other people with their problems especially her best friends. I am almost always there to help everyone that I know out with any problems that they have, when really my life is not so perfect either, just like Annabell.

2.) Annabell is a model for many different companies, and has starred in many commercials and magazines. But, like I said before, she has her problems in life. I know a lot of people who are models, and have seen models before, and you never know if they have any problems. Once I was watching a show about a model and she was fighting anorexia, but nobody knew this. It was horrible, just like Annabell's secrets.

My Book: There's A Flying
Squirrel In My Coffee
Author: Bill Goss
Page: Prelude

1.)My book is about how a man who is a Lieutenant Commander for the US Navy and has flown jets that can go faster than the speed of sound suddenly gets amelanotic malignant melanoma, which is one of the rarest forms of cancer. His life seems to suddenly be put on hold and instead of living for decades longer he has to live month to month and try to attend his young twin children's 6th grade graduation. I just recently had a relative on my father's side die from breast cancer at the young age of 26 with a 4 year old child. Her name is Ashlie and sadly she did not survive the fight against cancer but this man did. With his win against this terrible disease he carried information and his on personal experiences to millions across the world which is amazing.

2.) Over the years cancer seems to have become more and more common in today's society and in this book it shows how it doesn't only happen to sick or people who are not fit. This is part of the thing that the US and other countries have been trying to spread, that you must be constantly aware of cancer and your body for disease can strike anyone at any time no matter how unexpected.

CBassett6-
Mocking Jay is an amazing story! I love how the author describes the characters in such depth.

1. I think Emma and I are similar because we are both really curious and ask questions about EVERYTHING. She is looking for her twin sister's murder...I'm not but if my twin was killed, then I would too.

2. Murder and disappearances happen in this book, but also all around the world. Emma is searching for her missing twin, and when people go missing, their families help find the killers and the body.

AHines6- I've heard lots of good things about Sara Dessen. I'll have to read one of her books....

1- In this book I think that I am like Prim. Prim is Katniss's (main character) younger sister. Prim has this cat that she absolutely adores, his name is Buttercup. I own a cat named Hunter that I think is the sweetest and cutest cat ever. I found him in the woods behind my old church, so I have had him for awhile.

2- In this book the Rebels are trying to over-throw the government that they have in their society. There are a lot of people that are not happy with the government that the currently have in their country. So they want to take over and change to a different form of government.

I am reading So Silver Bright by Lisa Mantchev, I am currently on page 225.
The main character, Bertie is constantly doing something. As soon as she finishes one task another life or death problem occurs that she must handle. I sometimes feel that I don’t have any time or that as soon as a start one job there’s another urgent matter to deal with and can understand her frustration.
Each character’s personality is represented by a different element (fire, air, earth, water) in this story, there is conflict between elements which adds on to the initial problem. In real life there are many different aspects that go into a situation. In my book the elements effect how the character reacts. This is true in in the world as well for example there are many reasons America went to war in the Middle east Terrorism, oil and 9/11 are a few of them.

My book is The Ranger's Apprentice: The Lost Stories by John Flanagan. I am on page 189.

1) The main character Will, is a Ranger, which is a group of trained archers who act like a secret service to the king. I do archery as same as Will but on a different level since Will is an expert and I'm not. And he also shoots a long bow with a heavier draw while I shoot a Recurve bow.

2)There is a chapter in the book in which the main character, Will's dog is stolen by Roamers like today's dog robbers. The roamer's way of treating dogs and getting them to fight in dogfights to bet on them reminded me of some senseless people in the world who think you can abuse animals and can get away with it. Also the Roamers mistreat women, too. Which reminded me of the way women in places like the Middle East was treated.

Book:Woods Runner
Author: Gary Paulsen
Page: Just finished

1. This book relates to me because the main character Samuel is very brave. His village is burnt down and he can track his parent's footprints, so he knows that they were taken prisoner by the British. If it were me, I would go run and hide and cry in the bushes. But Samuel goes after the British, even though it is highly likely that he will die along the way. This relates to my life because my brother is like that. He would walk into a fire if I was on the other side getting tortured. Samuel is obviously willing to do the same for his parents.

2. This book relates to the world because in the book the German soldiers on the British's side, called the Heissans, go around and burn down random colonial people's villages and kill them, even if the people have done NOTHING wrong. They just go around and kill people even though the people would probably willingly give them everything they have in exchange for their lives. This is like terrorists today, because they are so stereotypical about the US. They would bomb a random place in the US, even if they don't know anything about the people living there. They just bomb it because it's in the US. That's the same way with the Heissans. Killed all colonists, even though they don't know anything about them.

My book: Bay of Pigs Declassified
Author: Peter Kornbluh
Page: 45

1) My book is about the Bay of Pigs invasion, an event that led to the invasion was when the U.S. placed an embargo on Cuba crumbling their relations. A connection I made to this was I once had a friend who did something wrong to me like the U.S. placed an embargo on Cuba that ruined our friendship up until today.

2) My text to world connection is that my book is about the Bay of Pigs Invasion that occured 50 years ago. Even though the event happened 50 years ago, it still affects our daily life today.

Cbassett6~ Your text to self connection was perfect! Now that I think of it, you are like Katniss! Great connection!

I am reading "The Battle over School Prayer" by Bruce J. Dierenfield and I am on page 107. This book is one of the books I am reading for my NHD project.
1. In the book, reactions of the prayer in public school revolution in the 1960s are included, and one extremely important reaction is the cruelty and abuse that the children of the parents that filed the court case faced. In my life, I have had friends that have been bullied or picked on based on their differences and this is one the main reasons these children were bullied. One case was Abington Township v. Schempp, and the Schempp children were constantly beaten and spat on by other students, and they encountered verbal abuse as well. People yelled at them after school saying, "Are you heading back to the Commie Camp now?" All of this abuse actually caused Roger Schempp at age 14 to develop a stuttering issue which affected his learning abilities, giving students another aspect of him to pick on. This relates to myself because both my friends and the Schempps encountered bullying due to their differences.
2. The book describes how the prayer in public school revolution caused many changes to form the current regulations for prayer in the public school system today. The Engel v. Vitale case ruled no prayer can be created by the government and forced to be recited on school property and that rax monies could not be utilized towards religious education. The Abington v. Schempp case ruled Bible scripture readings and Lord's Prayer recitations violated the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and were outlawed. In other words, the book describes reforms made right after the court case rulings in the revolution. This relates to the world because in everyday life there are debates on what can and can’t be said regarding prayer on public school property and reforms are still being made today. For example, there are disputes on whether students may initiate a prayer at graduation. Also, football coaches of a public high school in Tennessee were in law trouble when they spoke a prayer before a football game with their players.

Blog due November 4th

I am reading Silent Spring by Rachel Carson and I read the introduction, which was page I-XIX (19 pages) and then the actual book started, and I read to page 6, meaning I read a total of 25 pages.

One text to self connection I can make is the point of view the book is from. Rachel Carson gives off the impression that she is not happy with the environment and she would like to do what she can to improve it. She talks about the amount of pollution and the overuse of pesticides. I can relate to her point of view because like Carson, I believe that the world is pretty messed up in terms of pollution and what not.

A text to world connection would be when Rachel Carson talks about how the pollution at the time was "irrecoverable". I think that she is right about this because the pollution in the 1960's was awful and there was not much that could be done about besides try to stop causing it. This really connects to the world because this amount of pollution was/is actually occurring. The pollution will be very hard to get rid of once it is there.

The book that I'm currently reading is Catch a Rising Star by Tracey Bateman and I'm on page 22. One text to self that I've found so far, is that the main character Tabby went to NYU in NYC as a drama major, and that is the school that I would love to go to with something to do with performing arts. A text to world is that the city that she lives in has Asian Taxi Drivers. At this point in the book, I don't exactly know where she lives but she definitely lives in a big city, due from the traffic and lots of taxis that the book has talked about.

ChristieB6~ Nice connections!

My book: The Color of Water
Author: James McBride
Page:37
(Also, sorry how on the other post it says "LPaxton6, i'm in 5th period!)

1. I feel like I am very much like James, because I have always been curious about what I do not understand. Considering the fact he and his eleven siblings are white, James goes through his entire childhood wondering why his mother is white and why she "didn't look like the other mothers." I am also like this because I feel like when you are younger if something about you or your family is "different" it really bothers you.

2. Since this is a non-fiction memoir, James grows up in the era of segregation, and so, seemingly, this book reminds me of that time period. James' mother, Ruth is the only white woman in a dominate black society, and even at such a young age (eight years old) James can tell that things are not right. He even says, on page 25, "Partly because of fear for her safety, because even as a child I had a clear sense that black and white folks did not get along." This makes me think of the 1950's due to the lack of trust between different races.

My book was Nightshade by Andrea Cremer and I finished it. One text-to-self connection was that Calla, the main character, is very much like me. She sticks with a close knit group or friends, her pack, until she left for Shay, the other main character and the love of her life. This is like me in the fact that I have one large group of friends that I hang out with all the time but once every year, I leave them for the love of my life, summer. Even though I do see them sometimes throughout the summer, I don’t see them every day, like how Calla got to rescue them from the Banes and saw them after a long time. One text-to-world connection was that one person, Emile Laroche, was trying to take over all the Guardians to take down the Searchers and eventually the worlds, yes, worlds. Emile reminds me of Hitler using the Nazis, the Guardians, to take over the world. Even though Emile has a lot Guardians on his side, the Searchers, along with the help of Calla, some of her pack, and Shay, were not winning, but they weren’t losing.

Book: Shooting Star: The Brief Arc of Joseph McCarthy
Author: Tom Wicker
Page: Finished
1) A part in this book that I could relate to a personal experience was “A year earlier McCarthy had casually attacked Darrell St. Claire, chief clerk of the Rules Committee.” This means that began questioning him on if he was a communist. My personal experience with is one day I went to the library to check out a few books but when I went to the front desk the librarian there said I couldn’t check out any more books because I had a bill I needed to pay first. I tried to explain to her that I had all of the books at home I just hadn’t returned them, but I couldn’t because she cut me off and said no you need to pay your bill. I was very intimidated and angry that I couldn’t get my point across. I felt this was kind of like when Joseph McCarthy began questioning other people and how most of the time he wouldn’t let them finish what they were saying and he made them feel scared and intimidated.

2) My text to world connection is when a part in the book said “Among those summoned for interrogation by the subcommittee or the chairmen were African American poet Langston Hughes, writer Dashiell Hammett, columnist James Reston, composer Aaron Copland, and almost anyone whose presence would yield publicity virtually the only result of any of the hearings. I related this to the world when there was a lot of segregation between African Americans and whites. Most of the time back then if there was a problem between an African American and a white person and the police were involved, most of the time the African American would be taken to jail or given a ticket. What McCarthy did was he targeted not African Americans but people who were in the spotlight for their talents and careers. So mainly regular people who had regular jobs and weren’t big celebrities were not targeted because McCarthy didn’t really have anything to say about them he couldn’t come up with a good story to say why they were communist.

1) Morgan, one of the main characters, is a perfectionist, which is kind of like me. I'm not as extreme as she is, but I do like to make things work.

1) In this book, Brady has a few isolated close friends,J.T. and Digger. I find myself much like this ,even though I have many friends, I have only a handful of truly close friends.

2) In this book, Digger's grandfather's land was bought by a wealthy Italian. This relates to today, how people's houses are being foreclosed, or they can't afford their houses, and are forced to sell their houses.

2)This book is like the real world because Ben Hansen is a fugitive running from his former colleagues. Today there are people that are running from others because of things they did.

I just finished reading Unwind by Neal Shusterman. A text to self connection is when Connor, one of the main characters, is able to not lose his temper and just walk away from a situation that made him mad. I am just like Connor in the sense that I never get into fights and never lose my temper. A text to world connection is that things that are similar to being unwounded, which is taking all of a person's organs and using them for other people, are occuring today. For example, there is something called "organ printing" which I found when looking up things from the book.

The book I am reading is Guitar Boy by M.J. Auch and I am currently on page 48.

1) In Guitar Boy, the main character, Travis Tracy, has this deep connection to music and I would not say I have as a deep connection as him but I do have a love for music. In the book Travis is have a really tough time. His mother barely survived an accident and is completely unrecognizable even in her hospital bed. His father is becoming a jerk and kicked Travis out of his sucess in school to provide for the family. The man he is employed to is not exactly the most respected and nicest person in the world. This teenager has a lot of wieght on his shoulders, so he turns to music for comfort. He takes his ancient guitar and plays songs his mother used to play for him. I do about the same thing when I feel stressed and low. I have taken songs and sang them while playing the accompaniment intrument, just like the main character (except I used a piano). Sometimes I will just play my saxophone to my heart's content.

2) The connection of this book with the world is the sad reality of poverty in the USA, especially with teenagers. In the book, the main character as a teenage boy was living in poverty and he even had to quit school to make up for his lazy dad. In 2007, about 18% of the Americans under poverty were under the age of 18. The main character also had younger siblings in his family. About 10.1% of Americans in poverty are children under the age of 6 in married-couple families. Some teenagers who are old enough or seem old enough to get through the law that keeps you in school drop out to support the family, just like the main character. Many teenagers have to find full-time or part-time jobs to fight starvation or poverty, especially in early college years.

"Ship crowded together- so many you could barely see the dark water beneath them." This relates to me because one time when I was in Ghana. We were driving somewhere and there was heavy traffic. I got out of the car to look ahead and the cars were so tightly packed together that I could not even see the road. This is just like how Jack could not see the water

"But it wasn't smoke or fog. It was something else- some animal." This reminds me of how all over the world there are reported cases of big foot sightings, etc. These animals aren't regular animals they are human like, big, and scary.
CBassett6- That is a great text-world connection. Your connection makes complete sense and I agree completely.

My book is Bound by Donna Jo Napoli.

I feel that Xing Xing the main character in this book is similar to me in some ways. One way she is similar is that she has a half sister. The half-sisters are similar because both mine and hers need a lot of attention since they are young. I constantly have to tend to my half-sister like she tends to hers.

I feel this book relates to the Middle East but specific parts. In china when Xing Xing was alive women had no rights and were treated with less respect than animals. This is similar to the extremest Muslim parts of the Middle East. Women have to wear clothes to hide themselves. Women in the Middle East kind of symbolize the Chinese women in Xing Xing's time.

1) One of the main characters named Lindy relates to me because we both are very lovable. Lindy got Kyle, the main character who is a beast, to fall in love with her by her jokes, how sweet she is, and how she does not judge people; just like me.

2)This book is similar to the world because many people judge others by the way they look, and they don't care about their inside personality or their ethics. But in this novel, Lindy was able to look through how ugly Kyle was, and fall in love with him.
