Blog #9, DUE: November 11, 2011

Tell us the title of your book, the author, and the page # you are on.

We have practiced a lot with characterization and the five forms of indirect characterization.

1. Choose ONE of the forms of indirect characterization. Tell which indirect characterization method you are using (no numbers, be specific with which form of indirect characterization).

2. Give a specific example from your book of that indirect characterization.

3. Tell us the character trait that this shows about the character (remember, this should be an adjective).

I'm reading "Istanbul: Memories and the City" by Orhan Pamuk. (Since I'm going to Istanbul, Turkey over Thanksgiving break, I decided to read up on it!)

1.) Character's behavior

2.) The author frequently takes walks around Istanbul, and specifically around the Bosphorous, a huge river that runs through Istanbul. It's one of his favorite things to do when he is feeling melancholy or detached from the world.

3.) Trait: Reflective (He takes these walks to reflect on life and think about his feelings and emotions.)

Oops -- forgot to say which page I'm on -- pg. 150

I am reading the book, Lord of the Flies by William Golding and I am on page 32.

1.) Character's looks

2.) The author describes a boy named Piggy as, "old enough, twelve years and a few months, to have lost the prominent tummy of childhood and not yet old enough for adolescence to have made him awkward," page 10. The author is implying that Piggy is fat and quite dorky, starting his teenage years.

3.) Trait: Awkward ( As the author says himself, this boy is in his 'awkward' years)

KGraetz5 said...

Ms. J. Thomas ~ Is your book from first person of the author's journey in Istanbul, or does it just focus on a fictional life in the city ? Your book sounds very good though.

I just started reading Alcatraz vs. The Evil Librarians by Brandon Sanderson and I am currently on page 14.

1.) Character's behavior

2.) The main character, Alcatraz, includes many past examples of how clumsy he is. One such example is when he is trying to make ramen noodles. The flames of the gas stove flared up around the pot and caught fire on the curtains. Alcatraz then tried to turn down the flames, but the knob broke off in his hand. Then when he tried to take the pot off the stove the handle broke off.

3.) Trait: Klutzy

I'm reading The Prince of Fenway Park by Julianna Baggott and I'm on page 86.

1.) Character's thoughts and feelings.

2.) "Oscar pretty much did have all of the stats and stories memorized." pg. 12 Oscar knows almost everything about the Red Sox. He loves baseball more than anything and would give anything to go to a Red Sox game.

3.) Enthusiastic (Oscar is really enthusiastic about his love for the Red Sox. He supports them even though they are in the middle of the Bambino's Curse.)

DRowe5- I read that book and it's so crazy! What if you broke everything you touched?

DRowe5 said...

Karoline, I've read that book, and when I was reading it, that was one of the many character traits that I found for Oscar. Keep up the good work!

Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? By Ed Gorman is the book I am reading I’m on page110.
One character in my book is Richard Conners; he was a very successful man until he was accused of being a communist by Senator McCarthy, his public carrier was practically destroyed. There are people intending to kill Conners because of the label McCarthy gave to him, it is Sam, the main character’s job to find out who.
1) Through the words of other characters
2) “He figures his love for the downtrodden gives him the right to be a snob and a butt.”
3) The characteristic I chose was arrogant

I am reading Boot Camp by Todd Strasser and I'm on page 77.

1.) I will be using Comments made about a character by other characters in the story.

2.) The main character
Garrett makes comments about everyone. But the person he mostly describes is Sarah, a girl he has only known for 4 months, but they aren't supposed to contact each other and have almost no time to talk and see one another but Circle one of the only places where they can. Circle is a place to reflect upon yourself for what you have done to get into Lake Harmony (which is the boot camp, and the name isn't correct whatsoever. It’s a terrible place to be. They have other children who are higher in Levels (you have to move up levels to get out of there) who get to slap, kick and twist your arms to “teach you a lesson”) But Garrett's comments about Sarah are very detailed because its after her punishment called TI (Temporary Isolation), so he'll say "her eyes are sunken in and her skin is a sickly yellow. She has little white bandages on her arms everywhere and purple bruises on her neck, arms, and face. Her hair has been cut short again, for she hasn't moved on from being a level one." His descriptions help me know where Sarah has been and for the most part, what she’s gone through since the books never in her perspective.
3.) The character trait would be Rebellious because it doesn't matter to her how many times she’s sent to TI, she refuses to change for Lake Harmony because she believes so strongly that she hasn’t done anything wrong.

I'm reading "Ranger's Apprentice: the Lost Stories by John Flanagan." And I am on page 264.

1.)Comments made by other characters about the character.

2.)"...Jenny brought an array of imaginative and adventurous new ideas to her cooking..." This quote is from page 255 from the thoughts of the character Baron Arald.

3.)Creative(Jenny brings new ideas and experiments with her cooking.)

How are you enjoying that book? I'm planning on reading the third book in the series right after I finish my other books.

The book I am reading is The Sea of Trolls by: Nancy Farmer. I am on Page 21.

1)I will be using character’s thoughts and feelings.
2)On page one it gives a very in depth description of the main character Jack. “It was a good house, with oak pillars planted the root end up to keep damp from rising from the ground Jack had watched Father build it when he was seven. Father had thought a child couldn’t understand such a complicated task but Jack had. He’d paid close attention and thought he could build a house even now, four years later. Jack forgot very little of what he saw.”
3)I feel that the word to describe Jack would be clever. Jack does not forget many things and clever seems to describe him perfectly. It shows that 4 years later Jack could build a house that his father built by just watching him.

I just finished reading THe Son of Neptune by RIck Riordon.
1) Character's Looks

2) "He wore a silver skull ring, a chain for a belt, and a black T-shirt with skull designs. At his side hung a pure-black sword." This is describing Nico di Angelo, who is a son of Pluto (Hades in greek mythology). Nico plays an important rule as a messenger from the Underworld, and helps to bring back some of Percy's memory, slowly, due to the fact that Percy knew Nico before his memory was taken away. Most of the other campers at Camp Jupiter are afraid of him, and from his appearance you can tell why.

3) (I have two that I can use)
Trait: Intimidating or Alarming

Really interesting book!It sounds kind of like Lay That Trumpet in Our Hands, it's based on something real that happened but the individuals story is made up. Right?

The book I am reading is Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, I am on page 26.

Peris is the childhood friend of the main character, Tally. He seems like an okay guy but I would classify him as malleable because of the indirect characterization through the characters behavior. Peris says that he and Tally will continue to be best friends once she turns pretty which he never said before he turned pretty. This to me seems like he was changed from believing things in the short span of 1 month.

JThomas
I read a book about the old Ottoman Empire and their exchanges with Transylvanian merchants and it was very interesting. I talked of the cults that were rising despite the Sultans wants of pure Muslim religion.

1.) Character's behavior

2.) My book I just started is Beyond Earth Day. I am on page 23. This book tells Gaylord Nelson's perspective on the holiday and how it became. He based on becoming senetor decided to create a holiday because the Earth was in such bad shape. he created a nationaly known holiday "Esarth Day"

3.) Trait: Moving (He hased "moved" so many by the speeches he made and by the fact that he made an entire holiday or holiweek to support the Earth and many were touched by that.)

1) Characters actions
2) One of the main characters, Cass, is always prepared and I mean always. She is always with a backpack full of items useful in times of crisis or big disasters. In her room, there are photos of natural disasters and disasters that could be possible, and in her free time she studies new ways to be prepared in more disastrous events.
3) Prepared

1. Character's behavior

2. The main character in my book Elizabeth Holland is a rich girl in Manhattan, so she's kind of a brat towards the people that are a threat her golden future, or who just aren't as rich and pretty as she is.

3. Pretty. (All the boys love her, and her best friend Teddy Cutting proposed to her twice.)

I am reading Paper Towns by John Green and am on page 196.

1)Character's Behavior

2)Quentin, the main character, sneaks out with adventurous Margo Roth Spiegelman to head out and prank several of the kids at his school. (That thoroughly deserve it.)Afterwords, they head off to break into SeaWorld. However, soon after the best night of Quentin's life comes to an end, another day at school arrives. But Margo has disappeared, leaving behind a trail of clues for Quentin to find.

3) Trait: Rebellious (Even though he has a perfect attendance record, great grades and doesn't get into much trouble, he sneaks out with Margo for the night of his life.)

Nicole- I have Uglies on my desk right now... I'm reading it after I finish Paper Towns.

Author: Peter KornBluh
Page: 75
1)Through the characters words

2)President Kennedy stated, “How could I have been so stupid as to let them proceed,” referring to the Bay of Pigs Invasion on Cuba. He had asked his advisors more than 3 times. Kennedy did not see the un-favoring odds that the exiles would face invading Cuba.

3)I would say that President Kennedy is regretful now that he has seen the outcome of the attack.

Book: Deadly Little Games
Author: Laurie Faria Stolarz
Page: 55

1. The character's behavior

2. One of the main characters, Camelia, always has these visions of things in her head, which she then expresses by either sculpting them out with clay, painting, or drawing them. As you might be able to tell, she is an artist, so this is how she shows what she is picturing, or trying to get out.

3. Trait: Expressive

I am reading "The Battle over School Prayer" by Bruce J. Dierenfield, and I am on page 162.

1.) Character’s behavior

2.) In the prayer in public school court case of Engel v. Vitale, Lawrence Roth is the now-forgotten, instrumental force behind the entire case. He was majorly active and important in the filing of the lawsuit and is known for being an average American that protected his and his family's civil liberties through legal action. His involvement also caused many emotional and mental hardships which he persevered through to achieve the banning of prayer in public schools. "His involvement caused his family -- and others who joined him -- considerable emotional stress and nearly cost him his life."

3.) Character Trait: Determined (With his life on the line and much stress, he was determined to meet his goal of outlawing the Regent's Prayer.)

AMacNeil5 said...

Oscar seems like a really true fan of the Red Sox, considering he memorized all of their statistics and stories! That reminds me of another book I read called "Heat." The main character Michael was a diehard Yankees fan and knew every player on the roster and could list facts about them immediately. He also was yearning for the opportunity to attend a game.

I'm reading the book Guitar Boy by M.J. Auch and I am currently on page 81.

Character's Behavior

The main character, Travis, never completely submits to any other character that is unreasonable and is disgraceful. While his siblings listen and follow their uterly cruel dad, he is the only one who is able to oppose and lash out his own tounge against his dad. In the end, his dad gets so mad at him that he kicks Travis out of the house. Instead of listening to his boss on his first day of work, he does not decide to work for the low-paying boss but he dilerberately quits the job, unlike workers before him.

Rebelious (rebelious with good reasons though)

The book that I am reading is Catch a Rising Star by Tracey Bateman and I'm on page 110. A form of characterization is other characters thoughts or comments about another character. A specific example is when Tabby and her friends are talking about a rival soap actress, Rachel Savage. They make a code name if Tabby is acting up and it is Savage. They use it if Tabby does something diva-ish or not like her. That means that Rachel is a diva and only cares about herself and doesn't care what she does in public.

MaggieS6~
Is that the sequel to The Lost Hero?

I'm reading I'd Tell You I Love You But Then I Had To Kill You, by Ally Carter and I'm on page 56.

1. Character's behavior

2. The author describes Bex's behavior: "No one can make Bex do anything she doesn't want to do," Page 14. The author is saying how Bex will always stick to her ground no matter what.

3. The trait: stubborn (Bex is very strong willed and won't give in)

I'm reading "The Color of Water" by James McBride, and I am on page 119.

1. Through the words of the character

2. Ruth is a white mother of twelve black children living during the 1950's, and whenever they ask her any questions about her past, she always refuses to answer. That is why through much of the beginning of the book they know nothing about their past, or, for example, what happened to their biological father or any part of their mother's side of the family. That is until recently, because this book is a look at the life James' mother had been hiding from them for so long.

3. Trait: Secretive

CFaulk5 said...

I am reading Smiles to Go by Jerrry Spinelli, and i am on page 29 (I just started).

1) Characterization through comments made by other characters in the story.

2) Will, the main character, says that his former neighbor, Jim, is a "science nut". He also talks about how he would win the county science fair a lot while he was in school and then goes on to tell that Jim started working for NASA after he moved away.

3) Well-educated (From what Will says, Jim seems very smart, because you have to be very smart to work for NASA.)

PS- Ms. Thomas, I was reading Silent Spring, but it was really hard to find decent characterization because there is not any people in that book, and if there is, I haven't gotten to that part yet. That is why I had to switch to this book for this week's blog. :)

I am currently reading Tom Clacncys splinter cell endgame by David michaels and I'm on page 89.

In my book all of the agents have turned and are trying to capture him. In the text it said "damn it he is as sly as a fox" This form of indirect characterization is from other peoples words. The adjective for this characterization is sneaky because he is never caught.

kgraetz, wow that character sounds pretty interesting.

In my book The Roar by Emma Clayton I am on page 78. Through characters action the main character continuously uses cunning to escape the man who has been trying to capture her. She was actually being chased through France and easily navigated through the buildings to escape in a fighter pod. This shows that she is an intelligent young lady. If she can adapt to so many unique environments and devise a plan to escape the man.

My book is Flatland by Edwin A. Abbott, I am on page 62.
1)Description of character by other characters.
2) The characters in this book are actually living in a two-dimensional world in which from one's point of view, everyone looks identical. The characters are described as "all appear the same" "squares, triangles, and circles from everyone's standpoint looks the same." Page 65.
3)Trait: Curious. The main character is always questioning the existence of a dimension that the idea of is frowned upon by everyone.

Katy- That book sounds pretty, interesting, and somewhat awkward. It seems from the small bit that you supplied in your post.

Dylan- The clumsiness of your character sounds much like my sister. My sister is very clumsy and can most likely relate to your character. Especially if he to can trip over empty water bottles. Haha.

I am reading "Places I Never Meant to Be" by Judy Blume. Specifically "Spear" by Julius Lester. I am on page 40.

1)The Words of the Character

2)One of the characters, Janet, is talking to a white girl in a African-American literature class and says, "Hey, you! White girl! You sure you are in the right class?" Then later she says, "If you so afraid of Norma Jean Whitey getting her little white feelings hurt, maybe you better go sit next to her."

3)Trait: Judgmental or racist (because Janet keeps making remarks about Norma's skin color, and Janet is hateful towards Norma too.)

2) In the book Jack the main character is nice to everyone. Every time he sees some one he greets them. "Evening, I'm Jack- to everyone as knows me," Jack constantly says to people. Jack treats his friends nicely as well.

3) Trait: Friendly (Jack loves to meet people and make new friends. He is constantly talking to people and is very polite.)

Ms. J. Thomas- Is the story you're reading someone's life story? It sound interesting, and I have heard of the Istanbul before, because my dad has been there. I bet you I could relate the book to his experiences.

I just finished the book 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher.

1.) Words of the character

2.) In this book, Hannah Baker committed suicide. She recorded 13 reasons for this on a set of cassette tapes. Her tone of voice when she is explaining these reasons was surprising to me. She treats the fact that she is about to take her life like a joke. For instance, she says, "Now why would a dead girl lie? Hey! That sounds like a joke. Why would a dead girl lie? Answer: Because she can't stand up."

3.) Trait: Sarcastic (She is always talking with a condescending tone of voice throughout the book.)

The book I am currently reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling and I am on page 51.

1)The character’s behavior

2)In the book J.K. Rowling writes a situation about Dudley’s birthday, “Dudley, meanwhile, was counting his presents. His face fell. “Thirty-six,” he said, looking up at his mother and father. “That’s two less than last year.” Pg. 21 Then Mrs. Dursley explains that they will buy him two more presents to make up for the two missing, so he won’t throw a tantrum. Dudley also has many other toys which are mostly broken because he doesn’t take care of them properly.

The book I just started reading is Pendragon: The Reality Bug and I am on page 39.
Gunny, one of the main characters of this book is, I would say, curious. This is through the words of the character. Gunny was talking with Bobby, the other main character. He asked, “Do you think the day will ever come when we can all go home and get back to normal?” He is talking about where they defeat Saint Dane, the evil Traveler who is trying to take over Halla, which is everything, including all the worlds, time, and space. A Traveler can travel through flumes which take them to different worlds, and right now, they are going to Veelox to make sure Saint Dane doesn’t take over there. This is the fourth book and the fifth world they are trying to prevent Saint Dane from taking over and ruling the world. They have successfully saved the first four worlds, as far as I know, because that could change at any moment.
