1.) Why did you choose your book?

2.) Tell us briefly what it's about.

2.) Do you think the book you're reading is "on-level" for your reading level? Or do you think it's a little below or above your reading level? Explain.

The book I am currently reading is "The Devil Wears Prada" by Lauren Weisberger. I am currently on page 125.

I am reading this book because it is also a movie. When I saw the movie I loved it and thought about looking to see if there was a book to go along with it. Turns out there was one! This book is about a girl named Andrea who applies for a fashion job. Although she knows nothing about fashion she gets the job. The job is an assistant for Miranda Priestly (one of the most famous fashion editors). The book talks about all of her tasks that she must go through to keep her job and impress Miranda. I think that this book is at my level of reading because there are some words that I do not comprehend. It is also not a short book either, it's 360 pages.

I am reading Pandemonium by Laurn Oliver and I'm on page 157.

I chose my book because its next in the trilogy. But I started the trilogy because her first novel, Before I Fall is amazing. Pandemonium is about this girl who left the opressing society where love isn't allowed, it literally "fixed" so you won't get the disease. And before your "cured" you cannot be seen showing any type of affection toward anyone, even family. So Lena, the main character, escaped into the Wilds, where the people there believe society is wrong and love should be allowed. The book is building up to a revolution to get rid of the "cure". I think the book might be a little below my level because it is a very easy read, vocabulary-wise, but once in a while I will go below my level if I think the book is worth it.

Have you seen that movie? I love it! I hope its a good book too.

I just finished the book, The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan.

I began to read this book because of my love for Greek Mythology which got me into the series, and this book being the last in the series, I couldn't stay away from it. This book is about the evil Titan Lord Kronos coming back to destroy Mt. Olympus. The gods are too busy trying to defeat Typhon a storm monster that they have to rely on their illegitimate children who are half human half god.

Monica, I think that is more of a girl movie/book because I began watching it once and I couldn't finish it. I'm sure the book is good though.

I am reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and I am on page 348.

I chose this book because I am going to see the movie and I wanted to read the book first, especially because it was so popular. The Hunger Games takes place in the future, where North America has collapsed and is now Panem, divided into 12 districts. Each district must send one girl and one boy to fight to the death in the annual Hunger Games. Peeta and Katniss are the tributes from District 12, and this book is their story. This is a relatively easy read, but I still think it is at my level. There are some words that I don't know, and I think the content is appropriate for my age group.

Hunter,
I remember reading that series last year. It was pretty good.

The book I’m reading is ‘Imperfect Justice’ By Jeff Ashton and I am on page 250. This book I choose because, this summer I was the prosecution of Casey Anthony and my whole family was watching the trial, and I think that it would be interesting to read this book and see the whole case from where it first started. This book is about when Casey Anthony got put on trial for killing her daughter (Which I think that she is guilty) and what really went down at the trail and before the actually court. It is written by Jeff Ashton who was the Prosecutor for the trail, so it was very interesting to get his point of view of this terrible case. I think that this book is above my reading level, mostly because of the topic and how sick this case is, and how cruel the real world is. The death of a child should not be overlooked, but in this case it was a MURDER of a child which is so much worse, because this little girl who’s only had a few years in this world was killed. By her own mother. This topic is really dark and serious and not to be taken light heartedly, so I think that this book is beyond my level at this point.

Joy – I think that that is an awesome read! I can not wait until the movie! I hope you finish by then! It is so good!

The book that I am reading right now is called The Ovechkin Project by Damien Cox and Gare Joyce. I am currently on page 59 of my book. I chose this book because hockey is my favorite sport and Alex Ovechkin is my favorite hockey player. The Ovechkin Project is about a hockey player named Alex Ovechkin. IT is a biography on him and it also explains his hockey career. Ovechkin is one of the best hockey players in the NHL. For example he scored 2 goals in his first NHL game. I do think this book is on my reading level because there are a lot of words that are hard to pronounce.

The book I am reading and just finnished is The Hunger Games (A.K.A. Bet book of all times!) and it is by Suzanne Collins. I chose this book because I wanted to know what it was about before I saw the movie this Friday. So I reading in 12 hours and it is seriously the greatest book ever! It's so addicting. For those of you who don't know, it takes place in the future in a dystopia society were they host what's called the"Hunger Games" which is a fight to the death held in an arena between each of the 12 districts. A boy and girl between the ages of 12 and 18 go into a drawing to be chosen Katniss Everdeen's little sister is chosen and to save her life, Katniss leaves her life and friends and family to fight in the games. Asthe story continues many kids are killed in the gruesome games. I am not saying who wins!!!! I think I am reading on my level because this was a good book but there were a few concepts throughout it that were a little challenging to understand.

Mefferen6- I like that movie! Is it as good as the book because sometimes it isn't and the book is better? I hope it's not like that with the Hunger games!!!!

I am reading Th1rteen R3asons Why by Jay Ashler and I am on page 174.

I chose this book because SO many of my friends have said that it is really good. I also thought it would be very interesting because it is about a girl who tells 13 people that they are part of the reason why she killed herself, but after she is dead.

Hannah Baker commits suicide by overdosing on some type of pill. She dies, but right before she killed herself, she sent a box of tapes to someone, and that person is supposed to listen to them and pass the tapes onto the next person who is on these tapes. Clay Jensen is just a high schooler who doesn't have any clue why he is on the tapes, because he hasn't done anything wrong... Or so he thought. The story so far is about how Clay handles this situation, because it is very traumatizing.

I think my book is "on level" because only mature people can handle this book, since it is sort of disturbing. Also, some of the reasons why Hannah killed herself are somewhat graphic, so younger kids parent's wouldn't want them to read it.

I am currently re-reading The Hunger Games by Suzan Collins, I am on page 281. I am reading this book because I am going to see the movie and I wanted to refresh my memory beforehand. I first read the book last year for Mrs. Cheshire. This book is about a tyrannizing capitol that rules over 12 districts and forces them to participate in the annual hunger games. The hunger games are a battle to the death between tributes from each district, the main character Katniss is one of the tributes chosen. I do think this book is on my reading level because there are words in this book I don’t know, so it isn’t too easy but for the most part I can read and comprehend the story because it isn’t above my reading level .

I am currently reading Death Cure by James Dashner and am 22% done with the book. I chose this book because i had previously read the other two books in the trilogy and was interested in reading this one, the third. This book is about a group of teenagers who were held captive and forced to endure life-threatening situations. In this book, the kids break out but are seperated and are now being hunted down by WICKED, the people who held them in the first place. I think my book is on-level for me because it is a book that uses complex sentence structure and there are some words that i do not completely understand.

Saving Private Ryan by Max Allen Collins and on page 192. I chose my book because it is about World War II and anything about war or World War II specifically, it is very appealing and interesting. Saving Private Ryan is about saving a paratrooper from the 101st airborne that is missing in action. He is so important because all of his other brothers died and they are going to send him home; The government sends in Captain Miller's squad to get him out of there. This book is a little above my reading level because it has a very complex sentence structure and a very complex word choice.

I am reading Skeleton Key by Anthony Horowitz and I am on page 129. I chose this book because it is the third book in a series and the last book ended on a huge cliffhanger. This book was going to reveal that cliffhanger and that is why I chose it. Right now it is really hard to pinpoint what the book is about, all I know so far is that the main character, Alex, has just found out that someone has sabotaged Wimbledon by drugging certain competitors. I do think my book is on my reading level because it has a mature vocabulary and because it deals with more advanced ideals.

CChristensen6 said...

Hunter- That book was spectacular! I also love greek mythology and enjoyed the story very much.

I am reading the book 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher. I am currently on page 56.
1) I chose my book because it seemed like a fun mysterious read. This book was also recommended by so many people and it was suppose to be a knowledgeable book too. By that I mean it can teach you something as you read it.
2) 13 Reasons Why is about a girl named Hannah and she committed suicide and made tape recordings before she died about her problems and life. Hannah made a list of people to pass the tapes on to and the tapes go on from person to the other and each person had some special part in Hannah's life.
3) 13 Reasons why I think is about rich ton level for with grade but since we are an advanced class I think I could defiantly be reading a more challenging book. This book dose have some parts that require re-ceding and some unknown words but mainly is a non confusing read. The next book I choose will be an above level book because I like to challenge myself!

Monica- I love that movie but have never read the book! Is it similar to the movie or worse/better?

I'm currently reading Countdown by Deborah Wiles and am on page 296.

I chose this book because it had to do with the events of 1962 and what was happening at that time. It also includes really interesting pictures taken form that time relating to what is happening with the story (a lot of them being "Duck and Cover" pictures). Countdown is about a young girl, Franny, who is going through her own troubles. She wants peace and for people to understand what it's like to be so young going through the end of the Cold War, the beginning of the Vietnam War, and so much change. I think that this book is definetly around my reading level. Even though there is some "light-heartedness" to the book, it is a very serious subject matter that is important. It is also not a short book, being it's around 377 pages.

I'm reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and I'm on page 154.

I chose my book because a lot of my friends said it was an amazing book and I knew the trailer on TV looked really interesting. So, I wanted to read the book so I could understand more of the trailer and I wanted to read the book before I would see the movie.

To start, there WERE 13 Districts. However when District 13 rebelled against the cruel and inhumane government and the government won, they were destroyed. So ever since then, once a year the government holds the hunger games and each district has to send 1 boy and 1 girl tribute and they basically fight to the death. The hunger games would always remind the people of how much power the government has over the people. In District 12 they have drawing for the boy and girl to go to hunger games. However when Katniss' most treasured person to her in the world, her sister's, name gets drawn, Katniss volunteers to take her spot. Then the boy who gets drawn, Peeta, and Katniss move to the Capitol where they will be on the opening case night to try and look appealing so they will get sponsors. After the few training lessons each of the tributes have, they move on to the games. So far, at the point I'm at in the book right now, Katniss is still on her first day of the games.

I think it's on my level because there are some points in the book where I have to look up some words and also the plot of the book is very complex so you have to be able to keep up with everything.

I am reading The Titan's Curse by Rick Riodran and am currently on page 29. I chose this book because it is the third book in the Percy Jackson series and I happened to have it. It is about a journey to help save Mt. Olympus and people who are on the quest at the moment is Percy, Thalia, Grover, and Annabeth just fell off the side of a cliff. I think this book is a little under my reading level but I just needed a book to read.

For anyone reading Hunger Games~
At some points in the book do you picture you being in the tributes position? Would you have volunteered?

I am reading North by Donna Jo Napoli and I am on page 127. I chose this book because someone suggested it to me. I thought I would like it because I like books that have to do with adventure and danger in the Arctic. This book is about a young boy that wants to take after his hero, Arctic explorer Matthew Henson. He doesn't like living with his mom, so one day he decides to travel north. He wants to be just Matthew Henson and explore the Arctic even though he is only 12 years old. Right now, he is in Canada on a train that is soon arriving to the farthest train stop north. I think this book might be a little below my reading level because there has not been much hard vocabulary, so the next book I read will be on my reading level.

The book I am currently reading is One Night That Changes Everything by Lauren Barnholdt.

I bought this book at Books-a-Million for about four dollars, and the only reason I picked it up was because a) it had a nice cover b) The summary was intriguing. I'm not going to lie, it's going to be really hard to finish this book.

This book is about a girl named Eliza who owns a purple notebook full of every one of her secrets- the boys she wants to kiss, her thoughts about her sister, her fear of singing karaoke- and some how she loses it. Not only this, but it ends up in the hands of her ex-boyfriend, who despises her for breaking up with him.

This book has the content of a high-school level book- drinking, partying, etc.- yet it's written on about a seventh grade level, which worries me the most. I can't tell whether it's on level or not- but there haven't been words I didn't understand.

To all reading THG before the movie comes out- I heard that the movie was really accurate to the book... I sure hope so!

I have started a new book called Maze Runner by James Dashner. I am on page 50

I read this book because my mother said one of her clients was reading it and kept saying how good it was, so me, being the crafty man I am searched it on my kindle and bought it.

it is about a boy who had no memories of his life but wound up in a metal box in the middle of courtyard called the Glade. The entire population of the Glade consists of children of 11 years of age to 18 years of age. He stays there for a day with his counselor Chuck who shows him how the Glade operates.

I think that this book is on par with my reading level because of how sophisticated the plot is and what it takes to understand the multiple plots in the story.

I am reading the book A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin. I am on page 129.

I choose this book because a friend of mine recommended it to me and it is the sequel to the first book of the series that I read and the other was so good that I had to read this one.

This book is about a made-up kingdom that is set up in a sort of post Renaissance time. It talks about how there a war starting and 3 (maybe 4 soon) kings are vying for the crown. It changes points of view every chapter or so, giving the reader a large range of views and information.

This book is just above my reading level, but it is not too far above, because I can read it without hindrance except for a few words here and there. It is a very long book, but a great read for me.

CBassett6-
I completely identify with your feeling of right and wrong, and the savagery that one so innocent should not have to experience. I do not know much about the Casey Anthony trial because I try to stay away from anything that is publicly know, for I feel many people have strong, unyielding opinions that are not always backed up with facts. Despite this, from what I have heard I can understand what you said and completely agree.

I am currently reading Turtle In Paradise, by Jennifer L. Holm, and I started and finished it in one night.

I am reading this book because the title drew me in as well as the cover of the book. The picture is a photograph of a girl holding a starfish in her hand looking out to the beach. Since the title is Turtle in Paradise and I love the beach, and turtles, I thought it might be an interesting book to read. Turtle in Paradise is about a girl and her mother who are not exactly the richest people in town. Her mother is a housemaid because the benefits of being one are living and food accommodations. The little girl is named Turtle, by the way. So since Turtle and her mother live in many people's houses, they have to put up with all of the current residents. Not all of them get along with the "housekeeper's daughter" so Turtle is forced to move to the Keys with her Aunt and her 4 cousins. It is quite an adventure down in the Keys for Turtle and everyone she gets the opportunity of meeting. I think that the book I am reading is definitely "on-level" because it is not too low for me to easily understand and guess everything that is going to happen, but it is not impossible for me. I am really enjoying my book!

I am reading Captivate by Carrie Jones and I am 25% of the way through the book. I chose my book because I previously read the first book in the series, Need, and became very attached the the characters and interested in the plot. I was first introduced to the series when a friend recommended it to me. The story is basically about this girl named Zara who moves to Maine to live with her grandmother after the death of her father and she realizes that pixies are after her to make her mother their queen. Until the pixies desire to have a queen is fulfilled, (becoming a queen is a tortuous process that can result in death) the pixies are out of control, so Zara is forced between controlling the pixies or surrendering her mother. I think the book is on reading level because although it doesn't have extremely difficult word choice, it is over 300 pages and the plot can be hard to understand at times. The story requires a lot of interpretation.

LPaxton5 said...

Christie: Wow, that seems interesting. It feels like the trial happened very quickly so it would be interesting to really look back and see maybe why the puzzle pieces didn't exactly fit together, or from Jeff Ashton's prospective, why they should have.

I am currently reading "Pretty Little Liars: Wanted" by Sara Shepard. I am on page 205.
I chose this book because I want to finish the series, and I chose the series becuase many people have read it and say that it is amazing. This book is about how Ali's twin sister, Courtney, came to Rosewood. Courtney says that she is really Ali, but I do not think that she is telling the truth. Courtney has befriended all of Ali's old friends and is trying to act exactly like Ali because she has always wanted to be Ali. Since Courtney wanted to be Ali, and went to drastic levels to try, she spent her days in several insane asylums, and this is why no one has ever met her before. I think that this book, and the rest of the series, may be a little below my level of reading. There are a few words that I do not understand, but other than that it is an easy read.

I am reading Sherlock Holmes by Sir Conan Doyle and I am on page 232.
1.) I wanted to read it because it is a classic and why Sherlock Holmes was marked as the greatest fictional detective of all time.
2.) My book is a collection of short stories and novels so I can't just pick on one thing and explain but basically it's about how a clever English detective called Sherlock Holmes with his friend Doctor Watson at his side, solves crimes and mysterious in Britain.
3.)I think this book is little bit above my reading level, since one in a while words that I don't know comes up and it also has complex and long sentence structures.

I just began reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. I am on page 25.
I chose this book because it was something I had not read before and, because when I read the description, seemed like it was a unique and interesting story that I would enjoy. This book is about a little shepherd boy named Santiago who travels from his homeland in Spain to the Egyptian desert in search of a treasure buried in the pyramids. Along the way he meets a Gypsy woman, a man who class himself king, and an alchemist, which is like a philosopher. They all try and help Santiago on his quest and try to point him in the right direction. No one knows what the treasure is or if Santiago will be able to tackle the obstacles along the way. "But what starts out as a journey to find worldly goods turns into a discovery of the treasure found within." It about a boy named Stephen Quinn who was born after a major war that killed almost everyone off of the planet. When his Grandpa dies and he buries him, he finds a community called Settler"s Landing. That is all I know so far.

3) I think it is a little below because I read it last year, and it doesn't have many new vocabulary words.

2: This book is about Tim Tebow’s life, from when he was born to his career with the Denver Bronco’s football team.

I am reading the Eleventh Plague by Jeff Hirsch and I am on page 45.

I chose to read this book because I noticed it at the book fair, read the book description on the back, and I was immediately interested because the book sounded like it would be an adventure. I also read this book because Dylan R. recommended it to me.

The Eleventh Plague is centered on the main character Stephen Quinn. A war between China and the United States came about and the United States launched multiple nukes at China. In response to the attack, China released the toxin P11H3 into the United States. P11H3 delivered a disease, known as the Eleventh Plague by the Americans, and even though it was only a deadlier version of the flu, it killed just about everyone it came in contact with. This left America with a barren landscape, millions of people dead, and Stephen and his dad were forced to face one single task: survival. In order to survive, they must stay on the move and scavenger off of different materials and food items they can find. Stephen's grandpa died, but they are forced to stay on the move. They will be on an adventurous journey, searching for an incredible place that will provide them with all of their necessities. This is all the specifics that I know so far. I believe the concepts in the book are at my reading level, considering the events that have occurred so far are very brutal, and various descriptions of events have been disturbing. I think the vocabulary is probably a little below my level because there are not many words that I don't understand.

I have really liked the Narnia series so far so I decided to read the fifth book. In the book Lucy and Edmund are sent to their hated cousin’s house, Eustace. In the book Prince Caspian, Lucy, Edmund, and Eustace take off to find the 7 lost lords of Narnia. Their expedition from island to island took place on a ship called the Dawn Treader. At each island they reach, different problems occur like Eustace leaving the group to explore on his own! I believe this book is a little bit below my reading level, because of how short it is and I understand 99 percent of the words in the book. I will continue to read the book though because I am very enthusiastic about finishing the entire Narnia series!

He finds there that a group known as Big circle is fixing matches and he plans to mess up there plans.

Emily that was one of my favorite books of all time. But i heard the movie wasn't anywhere close to as good as the book. I guess that is a given though.

I am reading Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins and I am on page 102.

I chose this book because last year for literature circle I read the Hunger Games, the first book in the trilogy but never ended up reading the second one. Now with the movie coming out I thought I should finish the trilogy.

This book is about Katniss and Peeta coming back from the Hunger Games and having to deal with being a victor of the Hunger Games. By performing such an act of defiance in the arena, they have subconsciously started a rebellion from the Districts of Panem. The Capitol is not happy, and Katniss also has to deal with her undecided feelings for Gale and Peeta.

I think that this book is a little bit below my reading level, but not by much. It is a pretty easy read for me, and I have read much more complex books so it is not necessarily challenging me too much.

I loved that book, and I totally agree with you about having to be mature. Some parts were definitely a little much to take in and it is a very serious topic.

The book that I just started reading today (and what I haven’t been able to put down all day!) is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and I am on page 103. I choose this book because I firstly, really heard great things about it and I wanted to read it before I saw the movie, so hopefully I can finish it this week so I can see it soon! This book is about how Katniss Everdeen, the main character, is going into the Hunger Games, representing District 12. The Hunger Games are what the Capitol created so that they can reassure their power over the 12 Districts in Panam. The Districts had revolted against the Capitol years ago, but the Capitol won the battle, but completely obliterated the 13th District, so now there are only 12. Two children between the ages of 12 and 18, one boy and one girl, from each District are brought to an arena to fight to the death where only one comes out. Katniss had volunteered as tribute because her sister, Primrose, was chosen in her first year at age 12. This book is probably on level for my reading level because it does have a lot of little clues that can be hard to pick up on and it does have higher level vocabulary.

I am curently reading Under a War Torn Sky by L.m. Elliot and I am on page 37.

This book is about a pilot that that crash lands behind enemy lines by himself with no one but himself. Henry has to get back to the US. He is 19 years old and now in nazi territory. I chose this book because I have always liked war stories. The stories that all of the people in these books are very interesting to me and really tell me somthing about them selves. I think this on level because the unique literature that these war stories have are hard to decipher at times. This book has one severaly young adults awards.

To all who read The Hunger Games,
The Hunger Games is AMAZING! My question to all of you is: why do you decide to read this now?!

Hunter,
Rick Riordan is awesome. His books seem to be on level...

NHD has helped me grow as a student because it really showed me how you can start from scratch and still make a great project. I didn’t know anything about my topic before NHD and now I almost know too much (almost). This project also taught me the importance of listening and working well with your partner. I have a great NHD partner who contributes ample amounts of information and opinions to the project and our documentary wouldn’t be half as good without her. To future students the key to having a great project is to have a great topic. Don’t go with what’s easiest choice something that is unique or controversial. Your topic will help you stand out to the judges.
