Blog #25, DUE: Friday, May 11, 2012

Post the title and author of your novel, PLUS the page # you're on!!

Tell me one of your characters and briefly describe who the character is.

If this character were packing a suitcase for a trip, name THREE items that the character would pack and explain WHY you chose each item.  Your answers should NOT include something like: "A toothbrush because most people think it's important to brush their teeth."

I just started re-reading Mocking Jay by Suzanne Collins and I am 63% done.

The main character in this book is Katniss Everdeen, a 17 year old girl living in district 13. She use to live in district 12 which was blown up by the capital, but her family and friends got out safely before the bomb hit. If Katniss was packing for a trip she would definitely bring her bow. This is the weapon that helped her win the Hunger Games and supplied food for her family when she would go hunting. She has relied on this weapon in countless ways throughout the three books in this series. To go with her bow she would also need some arrows. Because what would you do with just a bow and no arrows? Lastly, she would pack a peal. When she went into the Hunger Games a second time the boy (Peeta) she was in love with gave her a pearl he had found in an oyster when he was looking for food. This pearl has a very sentimental meaning to her because Peeta was taken captive and tortured by the capital. Thankfully, Katniss rescued him back, but now he is mentally unstable and still working to overcome this issue.

I am reading Alex Rider Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz. I am on page 145.

The main character is Alex Rider and is a 14 year old spy in England. First, he would pack his modified Gameboy which can send messages, see through walls detect "bugs" and act as a smoke bomb. He would bring this because as a spy you are trying to gather information undetected. The Gameboy would help him go undetected as well as to find out what is behind walls and listen into conversations helping him complete his mission. Plus, as a spy it would probably become habit to always check for "bugs" in a foreign place. Second, he would probably bring a weapon like a knife because in his missions he always ends up defenseless against his attackers. Third, he would bring a picture of his uncle Ian Rider because he is the only family Alex had and to remind him that any mistake would lead to his death like his uncle.

In my book Crocodile tears by Anthony Horowitz i am on page 135. If he had to pack three things to take on a trip he would take a weapon to fight of others for he doesn't want to be left without a weapon if attacked. Second he would take his modified game boy for it allows him do many things that are helpful as a spy. Finally he would take something like a hat. it may seem simple but it could be used to hide his face and keep him from being noticed. Basically it just has to be a good disguise.

TMoretta5 said...

Charles I am reading a later book in the series. I picked two similar items but i really think your last choice of a picture of his uncle was a great pick.

I am reading Mocking Jay by Suzanne Collins and I am on page 45. The main character is Katniss Everdeen. She is a Hunger Games victor, and is currently the sign of rebellion in the Capitol and surrounding districts. If she were packing a suitcase, I thi she would bring...
1.) Bow and Arrow: these are the weapons used during the games and what she used to hunt with back in district 12. I think she would bring these because she is paranoid by the thought of being captured by the capital and sent to death by Snow, with bows and arrows she could protect herself.
2.) Communicuff: this is a divice made in district 13 for people of high status/ importance towards the rebellion. It's like a pager and fax machine mushed into one little bracelet on the wrist. Katniss would take this to keep in touch with her family and Gale so she could learn the progress of savingher love Peeta.
3.) Mocking jay pin: this is a symbol of rebellion and most importantly a token of luck from her district before the first hunger games. Katniss would use this as a reminder of where she came from and also as a sentimental piece.

Etappy6 said...

Mefferen6- I agree about the bow and arrow, and the pearl is a GREAT idea for Katniss. It's very sentimental to her in the second book. I didn't even know she still had it! Yay I guess she does.

I read the Demon King by Linda Williams Chima and I finished it. My character is Hans Alister. He was once a gang lord on the streets and is now a brother and son to a sister and a mother. He is also a member of the tribe up in the mountains in the Marisa Pine camp.
If Hans was to go on a trip, he would bring his collection of books with him. Although he hasn't had any education, he loved reading as a child when he hadn't had any mouths to feed at home. Hans would also bring along his Amulet, the Demon King's Amulet, that is. Hans just found out he was a wizard and his amulet is a magic transmitter that lets magic to flow and be stored in it.
Another item he would take with him would be his disguise kit. Hans is a refugee and a wanted man by the High Wizard's say-so. The High Wizard is a tyrant thinking of taking over the queendom of the Gray wolves. If Hans get recognized and captured he is sure to be dead with his powerful amulet, which had been in possession of the High Wizard, taken away from him.

I am reading the Harper Hall of Pern by Anne McCaffrey and am on page 121.
If Menolly, the main character, was to pack a suitcase to go on a trip she would pack a gitar and pipes, musical instruments in Pern, the world where the story is set. She would bring this because she loves and is very talented in music, though she is forbidden from becoming a Harper (a person who is like a teacher that uses songs to teach children) for she is a girl. Menolly would also bring a lot of sweet oil that she creates for her firelizards. (These are animals that are approximately a foot long. They are like little dragons.) The act of applying the oil to the little animals deepens the bonds between Menolly and her firelizards and it helps heal their skin.

Slee5-
That book sounds exciting. As you can see from my own post I am love fantasy novels, especially those that include magic and mythical creatures.

I am reading Beastly by Alex Finn and i am on page 296. *spoiler alert* So far in my book, Kyle Kingsbury, the main character, who is handsome, rich and has a "perfect life", meets this witch (he dosent know shes a witch) and decides she be an easy target to mess with and fake asks her to prom, then when prom comes around he shows up with a different girl who is a B**ch (sorry idk what else to call her & it fits her perfectly) and she was complaing about her corsage, which was a white rose, so he gives it to some random chick(<- the random chick becomes important later) but anyways basically that night the witch cast a spell on him and turns him into a literal beast, but she says he can break the curse by someone he loved and who loved him kissed him, and then gives him a magical mirror. so his dad, a news anchor who wants no part in his now beastly sons life, sends him to a different house and he lives there with his maid and blind tutor. eventually later on he somewhat kidnaps(her dad tried to break into Kyle's house but Kyle said he wouldn't tell the cops is he could have his daughter) Lindy, the girl he gave the rose to, and he falls in love with her. If i were to pick 3 items that Kyle would pack i would choose 1. the magic mirror that the witch gave him because it allows him to see anyone he wants with out them seeing him, 2.a white rose, not only does it symbolize the first time he and lindy met, but ever since he was moved to the house by him self, him and his blind tutor have been creating a rose garden and the garden is pretty much his life. and 3. a book, he loves to read ever since he became a beast, and also he reads to impress Lindy, and he reads pretty much every book she does so that they can have something in common.

amoore6 said...

Charles- I almost got that book, because it sounded awesome! but instead i got Beastly:)

I am reading Graceling by Kristin Cashore and I am on page 400. *spoiler alert*
Katsa, the main character, is a Graceling, which means she was born with a certain power called a Grace. Her Grace is survival, so if she was packing for a trip, she would not have many things she would need to pack. The first thing I think she would bring is a bow and arrow, because even though she is skilled with many weapons, this is her best one. The second thing would be Po's ring. This is an important item because it represents Po's position as a prince and it is the last thing he gave her before he got injured in the mountains. The third thing I think she would pack is something to disguise herself with, such as boys' clothes or a cloth to cover one of her eyes (people who are Graced have different colored eyes; this is how people tell them apart from regular people). Because Katsa is on a mission to find and protect a young princess from an evil king, no one must know where she is. To prevent being recognized, she would need things to disguise herself.

I'm reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett and im on page 321.

The main character in my book, Skeeter, is a girl living in 1962 in Mississippi, she graduated from Ole Miss, and doesn't have a husband (which is odd for her time period but is a very good writer. If she were packing things in a suitcase she would pack a type writer, a bunch of paper with envelopes and a pen, and a pack of cigarettes. Skeeter LOVES to write. Shes an excellent writer whose whose always trying to get some sort of job to be writing. If she traveled she would need her type writing to write out her frustrations and ideas. Then shes always contacting people with letters and editors teying to catch up or get jobs. Then a pack of cigarettes so whenever her mom called her when traveling she'd have her stress reliever.

pbasting6 said...

Emily-
I agree, those things are exactly what she would travel with and does throughout the book!

I am currently reading Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins, and I am on page 295. One of the main characters in my novel is Katniss Everdeen. She is in the Hunger Games ,for a second time, with her "lover" Peeta, forced to fight until there is only one person left. Katniss is also still trying to figure out whether she has feelings for Peeta, or for Gale.

If she were to pack a suitcase to go on a trip, three things she would pack would be a weapon (her bow and arrow), her mocking jay pin, and a spile. She would bring her bow and arrow, because that is one of the things she is skilled at. She can hunt anything, so wherever she would go on a trip, she would have food. Also, she would pack her mocking jay pin because she has been through a lot with it. At the beginning of the Hunger Games, a girl gave her the pin to wish her good luck in the Games, and she kept it throughout the first, and the second Hunger Games. It is special to her. Finally, she would bring her spile because in the second book, a sponsor sent her that as a gift, to help her get water from trees, because she had no other water source. This tool would help her while traveling, because she would have water if she was near trees.

I am reading The Book Stops Here by Ian Sansom and am on page 270.
The main character is Israel Armstrong who runs a mobile library in Northern Ireland with Ted Carson. Israel is from England so moving to Northern Ireland is intense. His girlfriend and family still live in England also. In this book Israel and Ted go to England on business trip to England.
If Israel was to pack a suitcase it would have a mobile library brochure, this Israel loves to look at and pick out the best looking mobile library. He would also pack a GPS. Israel and Ted are not god with maps and continue getting lost throughout the book. Of course, Israel couldn't go anywhere if he didn't have his cell phone. Israel is constantly trying to text his girlfriend, Gloria, who mysteriously won't reply or show up when they're supposed to meet.

I finished 30-second politics by Steven L. Taylor. One character in the book is Aristole, he was a scholar that was born in 384 b.c.e., he studied at Plato's Academy and later formed the Lyceum in Athens. One thing he would pack would be his treatise, Politics, because he wanted to share his thinkings, and wanted other people to know about how governments ruled by one, the few, and many are different. He would also bring paper and pencil to write down what he thinks. Lastly, he would bring a white robe that signified his wealth and power

I am reading Wishful Thinking by Alexandra Bullen, and I am on page 85. The main character in my book, Wishful Thinking, is Hazel Snow. She was adopted as an infant, and has been constantly moved from home to home. She really doesn't know anything about herself or who she is from. Her first adoptive mother died after a bit with Hazel in a fire, but Hazel feels that if she was still around things would be different. She would probably take the picture of her and Wendy to keep in her suitcase to look back on for young memories. Another important thing that she would most likely bring is her birth certificate. She gets this on her 18th birthday, which Wendy left for her. She finally knows the name of her real birth mother, Rosanna Scott, after 18 long and hard years. The third item I assume that Hazel would pack in her suitcase would be a bright dress she found in a thrift store from a rich school academy. She claims that it "found" her under a pile of broken shoes. She says there was something about it, and it wouldn't leave her mind, or let her leave without it, so she ended up buying it.

Monica - I agree with the bow! Katniss is great, but the bow makes her who she is.

I am reading Lord of the Files, which is an adult book, by William Golding. I am on page 24
In this book a group of young boys have been stranded on an Island from a plane crash. One of the main characters of this book is known as Piggy, he is chubby and pale as well as sensitive. Piggy lost his belongings in the crash but where ever he goes he take his glasses with him to see and to fidget with when he gets nervous. I bet Piggy would pack an inhaler because he has asthma, which in the past has prevented him from doing strenuous activity. I assume that Piggy would also pack some extra candy, his aunt owned a candy store and he was allowed to take as many as he liked.

The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks pg 56.

Logan Thibault- This character served in the marines where he found a picture of a girl that brought him nothing but luck since he's carried it around. Now he's been out of the marines for a while and is on the mission the find the girl in the picture. His only clues are that her name starts with an E and other small clues in the picture (i.e., she was at a fair in Hampton, a guy in the background had on a Harley university shirt, etc.)

If Thibault were going on a trip the first the he would bring would be a leash because he would bring his dog Zues with him and even though Zues doesn't need a leash and wouldn't run off, Logan would want to have it incase he ran into a cop who told him to put it on the dog or something like that.

He would also bring a sturdy pair of walking shoes (sneakers, tennis shoes, etc.) because he loves walking. He only takes rides occasionally, because he loves walking and it gets him where he needs to go so he doesn't need to get a ride!

He would also probably bring a tent because he likes the outdoors and would be more than willing to camp out in the woods or something if he couldn't find a motel that would let Zues in. Even if he did find a motel, Thibault would still want to be able to have the shelter in case he needed it and because he loves the outdoors so he would enjoy sleeping in a tent.

amoore6- I read that book. It's so good! I think I'll reread it. I love your first thing- the mirror. Obviously! That's better than all of my material belongings put together. I hting with that you could do anything- you could spy on people to see what they're doing and take advantage of them. (Like if you needed some stuff from the store you could see want the employees were doing and if they were all being lazy and not paying attention you could just steal what you needed.) You wouldn't even need anything else!

I am reading The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan and I am on page 226. Jason, the main character of this book is the son of Jupiter (Zeus) but does not remember how or when he got to where he is right now. If he were packing for a trip he would bring his coin, which is his magical item that can turn into a sword or spear, he would also bring his friends Piper and Leo because they are also demigods and they have become good friends. Lastly he would bring a bag of winds he has obtained so he can travel anywhere at a quick rate.

The book I am reading right now is called Emory’s Gift by W. Bruce Cameron. I am on page 95 of my book. The characters name that i am choosing is Charlie Hall. He is a outsider at his school. Charlie is 13 and in eighth grade and he is starting to loose his friends, they are even starting to bully him and call him names. Charlie is in love will his counselor from Junior Life Saving class. The counselors name is kay and she is 19 years old. Charlie’s mom died a few months ago and he is having a hard time. He lives with his dad and they don't really talk to much. His dad always seems to so hurt about his wives death. Charlie has become friends with a grizzly bear that he met in a stream by his house. The bear saved his life from a mountain lion.

If Charlie had to pack three things in a suitcase i think he would pack a picture of his mom, a gun, and kay’s phone number. He would bring the picture of his mom to help him remember her. Charlie would bring along a gun because he likes to steal guns from his dads gun cabinet and see how fast he can take them apart and put them back together. Charlie would also bring Kay’s phone number because he is in love with her and he will want to call her even if she doesn't pick up.

I am reading Through my Eyes by Tim Tebow with Nathan Whitaker and I am on page 243.
The main character of this book is Tim Tebow. If Tim was going to go on a trip the absolute first thing that he would pack would be his bible. He would pack a bible because everything he does has some relation to God and Jesus. You could say that Tim lives for God in a way. The second thing that Tim would pack would be a football. I say a football because Tim has played football ever since he was a little boy, and it was his dream to play in the NFL. The third thing that Tim would pack would be a photograph of his family, because nothing matter more to Tim Tebow is God and his family.

I am currently reading Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins and I am on page 257. One of the characters in my book is Finnick. He is a past victor of the Hunger Games and he is now fighting with the rebels against the Capitol. If Finnick were packing a suitcase, three things he would take are a piece of rope, a picture of his wife, Annie, and a trident, probably the one that Beetee made that is specialized just for him. He would take the rope because that is what he uses when he is nervous, or just as his healing method. He just takes the robe and ties all sorts of knots, over and over again. The picture of his wife, Annie, is a must because he loves her dearly and he hadn’t seen her in what seemed like forever. The trident is his weapon of choice for anything. In the 3rd Quarter Quell, or the 75th Annual Hunger Games, the first weapons he picked up were the tridents.

I am reading the Maze Runner by James Dashner, I am currently on page 200

The main character in the book would most likely bring friends because he wants somebody he could depend on.And besides who would want to go on a trip alone? he would likely bring a survival kit full of various tools to get out of situations because some of the things that he has seen in the maze and glade are extraordinary and could never occur in our real world, but he has seen things nobody in our world has. Thirdly, he would bring somebody who knows the area. His memory was wiped before he entered the glade and has no memory of how he got there and no memory of the earth or family he came from.

Monica ~ I read that whole series, and I think she would bring something more vital than a pearl, even if it is so sentimental to her.

I just finished reading the Last Battle by C.S. Lewis. Tash, one of the characters in the book, is the God of the Calormenes, and is very evil and devilish. If Tash were to go on a trip, I believe he would bring Shift, all his unrightfully owned gold, and a bag of tricks and costumes. Tash would bring Shift, because Shift is his number one scam artist. Shift can convince people to give him gold, not knowing that he is scamming them or lying to them. Tash would also bring all his unrightfully owned gold, because he truly loves his gold and would never go anywhere without it, especially because it was basically stolen. Gold is if not the most, but one of the most important things to Tash in the book. Tash would lastly also bring a bag of tricks, so he could trick people into giving him gold and other precious things. The trick bag would be filled with costumes, like the Aslan costume he used in Narnia, and other items. The reason Tash would probably take the trip in the first place would be to get gold from others like he did in Narnia.

Monica- I love the Hunger Games series, although I have only been able to read the first book. I am really anxious to read that book this summer. Is the book any good?

I am reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini and I am on page 28. The main character Mariam is a 15 year old girl who has grown up shunned living with her mother because she was born as the child of an affair. Her father still comes to visit her every Thursday, and she loves him and understands why they cannot live together. But she has also grown up with the verbal abuse of her mother, who wants her to believe that her father is a terrible person.

1). The first thing that Mariam would bring with her if she went on a trip was her cream colored dress. I think that as small as an item that this is, it is important to her because this is what she wore on the day that she visited her Father's cinema and left the Kolba for the first time. I think this will eventually have sentimental value to her.

2). The second thing that I think she would bring would definitely be a journal. Mariam has been sheltered her whole life and has never experienced things that most people would find to be uneventful. She would most likely want to document these things, because of how new everything is to her.

3). The last thing that Mariam would bring would be the leaf-shaped pendant that her father gave her. I think this gift is extremely important to her, and it is definitely something she would want with her.

Monica~
I totally agree with you on the pearl, it was definitely a very important object to Katniss throughout the book!

I am currently reading Sunrise Over Fallujah by Walter Dean Myers and I am on page 58.
The main character is Robin Perry, also called "Birdy" by some of his fellow soldiers. Robin is a new recruit out of Harlem and he is in Iraq for the war. His dad is Kenny Perry and his Uncle his Richard Perry, the main character from Fallen Angels. Robin's uncle's involvement in the Vietnam War inspired him to join the army, despite his father's discouragement. He really didn't know what he wanted to do with his life and he ended up joining the army. If Robin were going on a trip, 3 of the things he would pack in his suitcase would be...
1. Sheets of paper and pens. Robin is in the war in Iraq and he loves writing letters back home to his Uncle and his dad. Writing to his family makes him still feel connected to them and this gives him something else to think about in order to get his mind off of the war. If he went on a trip to somewhere far from home he would definitely want to have the ability to write to his family and stay in touch.
2. A deck of playing cards. In the war, the soldiers have a lot of downtime in the barracks and they have to find different things to do to make this time less boring. Robin and numerous other soldiers play card games during their free time. Playing cards is one of his hobbies and he really enjoys playing the games, so he would definitely take a deck of cards on the trip.
3. A Bible. One of the soldiers in the same unit as Robin is Jonesy, who is an extremely religious person, and he begins talking to Robin about God. Robin believes in God, but hadn't prayed in months. The talks with Jonesy begin to start bringing Robin closer to God and Robin starts praying much more often. This growing relationship with God and the changed view on him would make Robin want to take a Bible on his trip.

I am currently reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett and I am on page 235.

One of the main characters in this book is Miss Skeeter Phelan. She’s tall and gangly; her hair is frizzy and it is not very pretty. She still lives with her mother and is treated like a child even though she is a grown woman. If Skeeter was packing for a trip I think she would definitely bring her typewriter. She’s always wanted to become a journalist and enjoys writing very much. She also works for a newspaper where she writes an advice column about house cleaning. Miss Skeeter would also bring her Shinalator, which is a machine that straightens your hair, and it makes Skeeter look pretty with straight hair. Her hair is much less frizzy with the Shinalator. Since Miss Skeeter is tall she mainly wears flats, so I think that would be the third item she would bring. Almost always when she has a dinner date she is forced to wear flats due to her height.

In my book the main Character is Jason Grace who is a son of Jupiter God of the Sky. If he were to go on a trip it would most likely be a quest and in that case he would need his coin. His coin is magic and when he flips it, depending o if it lands on heads or tails, it turns into an ancient roman sword. The second thing would be his two best friends, Leo and Hazel, these are also demigods and they fight together as a team. The last thing would be his friend Leo's Dragon Festus. The dragon would be used as transportation and protection. The dragon can conveniently shape shift into a suit case.

Mary Anne, I read all three books in that series and I think Catching Fire was my favorite, I hope you enjoy it too.

The first thing that Paul would bring is one cigarette because every time he finishes a book he has a cigarette amd they help him write and think.
The second thing he would bring is the bottle of champagne because that helps him get to the end of his writing knowing that he gets the whole bottle when he finishes.
The last thing that he would bring is his typewriter. he would bring this because the whole reason he travels is to write and he is always writin. He wouldnt be able to have a good trip without the typewriter.

I am almost done reading The Alchemist By Paulo Coelho. I am on page 126.

The main character of this book is a boy named Santiago. He has his heart set out to find the wonderful treasures hidden in the Pyramids in Egypt. He started out in his home land of Spain where he was a shepherd for a very long time. He practically counted the days go by that he did not follow his dreams, all of which led him into finally following his personal legend of traveling to the pyramids. Santiago faced many hardships before even getting to a point where he had enough money and supplies to travel the desert. Overcoming these issues have made him into a man that is not only brave, but a man that has now found a way to find the treasure within him, which is love and compassion.

The first object would be his book on the ways of alchemy. He notices that the book is not teaching him much of anything, which bothers Santiago. He later finds out why it was not teaching him, and he discovers that alchemy is only taught by doing not by reading. He learned this from the famous alchemist that guides him on his quest. The second thing he would most likely pack would be two stones he received from a the King of Salem, one being made of Urim and the other Thummim. One stone is black and the other is white. These stones were a tool that Santiago used to make decisions. White meant 'no' and black meant 'yes'. The third and final object would be a crystal cup. To earn some extra money, the boy offered to take a job with a man and his crystal shop. One day the boy thought of making a cup to hand out with lemonade in it to quench the thirst of the shoppers from the brutal heat. This was his million dollar idea because it made the shop so popular and now making the owner very wealthy. It would symbolize the accomplishments the boy had been through on his trip to follow his dream.

My book is called Scorpions by Walter Dean Myers (sound familiar?) and I am on page 85.

The main character's name is Jamal Hicks and there are a few specific things he would bring.

The first thing would definitely be his drawing journal. This 12-year old boy just loves to draw nature, especially to get out of the reality that he is stuck with in the projects. He usually draws the garden that is outside his apartment that was planted by the Chinese apartment owner.

Another thing he would bring is the clothes that he trades with his best friend, Tito. His friend Tito always trades clothes with Jamal as a sign that they are really close friends and end up keeping each others clothes sometimes. A friendly symbol of their friendship and brothership.

The last thing he would bring is his new silver pistol. Now, even though he is only 12 he was recently named in the book as leader of the Scorpions, a crack gang that was last led by his older brother. He does not like the idea of holding a pistol. In fact, I bet he prays every night that he will not have to use it. But it keeps the people he is in charge of in the gang and other people he does not want to deal with under the fear of the bullet. This is mostly because Jamal's brother just killed someone and is serving time in jail. His brother's imprisonment is actually the central conflict of the whole book. He seems to think that he could use the gang to stash out money to bail his brother out of jail.

Katy-

How did Santiago hear the stories of Egypt? I mean Spain and Egypt are not too far away but they are still on completely different continents.

I just started reading 13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson and im on page 40.

The main character of the story so far is Virgina, but everyone calls her Ginny or Ginger. She is shy and timid and is on a search to find her "runaway" aunt. They call her that in the book because her aunt moves around alot, travels and isn't stationary. Everytime she completes the 'mission' of the blue envelopes (who her aunt sent her) she gets to open the next one in order and it leads her one step closer to her aunt. However all of these envelopes lead her on new adventures.

Actually my character in the book is given a small backpack to pack only the essentials she needs, no electronics, or journals, anything 30 pounds and less. So three things what i think she would bring, jeans, sunscreen and a light jacket. I think she would bring the jeans because jeans don't keep you too warm or cold, and they would be good to travel in. I think the sunscreen because she is traveling with the envolpes during June. I think she would bring a light jacket because sometimes on the plane rides it can be cold, and she never knows where she will next end up.

Which book out of the Hunger Games series is your favorite?

I am currently 84% through Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins.

A character in my book is Katniss Everdeen, a 17 year old girl who is at war with the Capitol. Her goal is to kill President Snow and free all of Panem. She is strong and independent, but can be sensitive at times. If she were to pack for a trip, she would definitely pack her bow and arrows, because archery is her main talent and number one defense. Her bow and arrows would be the most useful tool and weapon. The third item she would take would be the Holo. This item let's her look at a holographic map and layout of the Capitol and all of the mines, bombs, and other threats planted within the Capitol. This could be very useful to her because of the dangerous situation she is in, and it would help her keep her squad safer.

Paige- I have seen the movie The Help, and I totally agree. Skeeter would NEED her typewriter!

I am currently reading Roald Dahl's Book of Ghost Stories, put together by Roald Dahl. As of right now I am reading the short story located in the book called "The Sweeper" by A.M. Burrage.
One of the characters is Miss Ludgate, an elderly lady who is slightly mean if she does not get her way, but always helps beggars. Her reason being that when a beggar asked for food once, she made him sweep leaves but he was so food deprived that he died right there and cursed her. She would probrably bring bread for beggars for the reason listed above, her deck of cars because in the story it says that she plays cards every day, and one of her shawls that she wears every day because it makes her who she is.

CJ,
I like how you give the percent what you have read so far. Also, about the book, I have been meaning to read it. Is it good? It sounds like it would be.

I am currently reading "The Vile Village" by Lemony Snickett and am on page 15. One of the main characters in this novel is Klaus who is part of the Baudelaire Orphans and is trying to avoid Count Olaf with his two sisters. If he were to pack a suitcase on a trip, the first thing he would bring would have to be a novel. This is because he is literally in love with them! He cannot go a day without reading. The second thing he would bring would be a glasses since he has terrible vision and can hardly see at all without them. They also help him with his extensive reading. The third and final thing he would bring would be a dictionary. He would bring this because he often uses an extensive vocabulary when talking to his sisters or others.

CJ I really want to read that trilogy! It sounds very good. The fact that you said she would bring bows and arrows means that is action packed. That is what I look for in a story.

In my book You Don’t Know Me by: David Klass I am on page 79 my character is very independent and has some quirky things. My character would take a journal because he thinks fast and he might want to right down his thoughts, because the book is basically a diary of his life. He would also take his tuba because he sort of expresses the emotions that he builds up through his tuba which is usually a great thing, because he gets disconnected with the world and lost in his mind. The third and final object he would pack is his collection of books, because he does not like many things and is in his head most of the time because of the abuse he suffers at home, so reading his books may help clear his mind from his busy life.

Jaci that is such a great book! I love how the author makes everything so strange and creepy, good job for choosing the three items!

I just started reading the Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka and I'm on page 5.
Very strange book, but the character Gregor Samsa wakes up one day as a very large bug of sort. Very similar to a large man sized cockroach. If Gregor were traveling somewhere he would probably pack a large amount of sleeping pills, or something. Because he thinks he can "sleep it off" or something of the sort. He would probably be sleeping alot, and since bugs don't have the same sleeping habits as a human, but he still has the human mindset. Thus he would need the sleeping pills to sleep.
Monica- I remember reading some of that book but not all of it. I have yet to see the movie also.
Charles- I have heard of those book but have never read them, let me know if it is worth it.

I just started reading Sunrise Over Fallujah by Walter Dean Myers and I am on page 28. One character in this book is Robin Perry, the nephew of Richard Perry from Fallen Angels. He is a new soldier from Harlem that is fighting as a part of the Civil Affairs team. If he were packing a suitcase for a trip, three things he would bring are a picture of his uncle, Richard Perry, pencil and paper, and a deck of cards. Firstly, he would bring a picture of his uncle because his uncle is very important to him. Richard Perry is somebody that Robin looks up to, because he already served in a war, so they can connect in a lot of ways. Another item he would bring is a pencil and paper. Robin loves to write and he frequently writes letters to his uncle. With the pencil and paper, he could write to his uncle recounting the events that occur while he is in Iraq. Finally, Robin would bring a deck of cards. This is because there is a lot of free time in the first section that I read. In this free time, Robin often plays cards, so he would want to bring these to pass the time away.

I'm reading Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks and I am 54% of the way through the book. One of the characters, Alex, is a widowed father who is very dedicated to properly raising his kids and running a general store. After years of being a spy in the army, he is very observant but is careful of how and when he uses this gift.
If he were to go on a trip, one of the things he would bring is a photo album of his two young children because he is family orineted and would love to show the pictures to people he encountered. A second item would be a jounrnal because he is observant and would want to write and draw the things that he sees. The last item he would bring is money, because he would want to buy a souvenir for Katie, the woman that he has recently fallen in love with. She is very important to him and I know that buying her something special while on the trip would definitely be on his mind.

Sungmin: That's interesting that they trade clothes as a sign of friendship!

DRowe5 said...

Andrew, I picked two of the same items as you, because they are both important parts of the first section of the book. I liked your choice for the third item as well. Good work!

I am reading The Whisper by Emma Clayton and I am on page 37.

There are two main characters in this and it just so happens that there twins so Ill tell you about both of them. There names are mika and ellie. These two twins are superhuman which is regular among there peers, but what seperates them from the rest is that mika has webbed feet and ellie has webbed hands. The twins have a bond that is very unusual that seems as if it has powers. If they could pack 3 things, i think they would pack a communication device of some sort, tools, and medicinal supplies. The communication device would be incase if the twins gots seperated again or if the group had to split. Tools would be used to break through any of the fortresses defenses and to deactivate borgs. Trouble seems to always follow these two so they are going to need medicines for the two of them and the group wif they get past 'The Wall'.

Monica,
I think her bow would probably be one of her more treasured/important things. Right?

Maryanne,
Wow, theres alot of hunger games fans. Gale or Peeta? Katniss's mockingjay pin most likely has the most meaning to her.

I am currently reading The Treasure Map of Boys by E. Lockhart and am on page 134. One character is Ruby, she is unsure of who she likes and also goes to a Doctor for therapy sessions. She is a junior in high school and her two best friends are Nora and Meghan. If she could take three items on a trip I believe she would bring frog notes (I'll explain), vintage clothing, and her homemade doughnuts. Her ex-boyfriend, Jackson during their relationship would write her notes and put a frog on the letter depending on his mood. After they broke up she has despartely wanted to get another one of those notes and I believe that she will cherish them. Therfore packing them for her trip. Her clothing style is like a vintage look so there is no doubt in my mind that she would bring her clothes. The last thing would be her homemade doughnuts. When she made them she didn't have a chance to eat any due to big dog problems and I still believe that she is craving some "fried deliciousness."

Karoline~ Is that the same book as the new movie? The name sounds familiar.

Oops! I forgot to say that my character's name is Thomas, and he is in a new world with no memory of his past at all, he is confused and curious to find out what is going on.

JHebin5 said...

Sorry Ms. Thomas! I have been on a boat for the past two days without internet. I am reading The Shadow Club by Neal Shusterman and I am on page 141.

Tyson McGaw is the kid in school that is picked on and bullied by everyone else. He is at the bottom of the "pecking order" in school and he has a rough life in general, and whenever someone accuses him or bullies him, he will revert to fighting. If he was to pack for a trip, he would bring supplies to make marionettes. Only one other person knows what Tyson's hobby is, but Tyson has dozens of marionettes hanging in his room and a work desk to make them. He would also bring a rubber bed sheet. Even though Tyson is 14, he is a bedwetter. The most important thing he would be sure to bring with him, is his journal. He has a special journal that he keeps with him at all times. Nobody knows what he writes in it, but he carries it with him and guards it with his life.
