Blog #3, Due: Friday, Sept. 14th, 2012

Post the author and title of your novel.

Describe the setting of your novel.  Setting includes time period, place, and environment (atmosphere, what the place is like).  Tell us how you know (AKA use evidence from your book).  If you aren't sure, make an educated guess and tell us why you choose that time, place, and environment.

I'm reading "The Maze Runner" by James Dashner.

I don't know the exact time period of my book, but I assume it's set in modern times, the 2000s. The main character describes another boy's "normal" clothes consisting of a black t-shirt and jeans. Also, the way they speak sounds contemporary.

The place is the Glade, a massive open area surrounded by stone walls that reach hundreds of feet into the air. Nobody knows where or what this place is, but it seems to be outside of our normal conception of the world. I say this because there is no sun, there are strange creatures (ex: beetle blades), and the physics of the place don't seem to make sense (the gigantic walls move). There is a maze outside the Glade, but I haven't read far enough to know the environment of the Maze.

Environment: The Glade is bright with a blue sky, but there is no sun. There are fruit trees and small farms, it smells like agriculture outside, and the temperature seems to be average since it's not commented on.

I'm eager to know what's in the maze!

I'm reading "The Final Diagnosis" by Arthur Hailey.
I Think the time period is in the 1960's because it's sounds like it's set in the time the book was written, 1959. Also, the machinery and methods described in the book seem old fashioned. The exact location is in a hospital is in Burlington, Pennsylvania. A lot of equipment are out of date because the hospital was neglected for many years. "The chairman of the board had been an aging industrialist who most of the time had delegated responsibility to someone else, appearing at the hospital only for the occasional social function (Hailey, 17)." Currently, the main character is restoring and modernizing the hospital.

I am reading Saving The World and Other Extreme Sports by James Patterson.
The time period in my book is sometime in the near future maybe around 2050 give or take some years. I know this because it talks about types genetic engineering that we haven’t done today but most-likely will try to in the near future. Also it mentions once about curing cancer, which we haven't done yet either.
The people in my book are runaways so they don’t stay in one place for a long time. Although there is one important place in this book called The School (Commonly known as ITEX). The School has many boring pure white rooms, and one special room for the Mutants. The scientists at The School manipulate human and animal genetics and they keep all of their ‘inventions’ in dog cages in that one room. There is also a field behind the school where the scientists ‘retire’ (aka kill) the inventions that go wrong. ITEX has hundreds of locations all over the world.
The environment in this story is mostly the same as today, sunny, snowy, hilly, ect. Since the characters in this books didn’t stay in one place for a long time they experienced all kinds of weather. They were at the California beach where it was dying hot, and they went to a northern state where it was snowing. So my characters experienced all kinds of enviroments.

I am reading Tigers Voyage by Colleen Houck.
I don't know exactly the specific time period of my book, but it seems like it was set in a modern time, like today in the 2000's range. The author makes the characters talk and dress in ways like we do today. Also the technology is really advanced that is described in the book, and is identical to how it is set up and used today.
The place is set somewhere in India, mainly in the jungle and the ocean. The main character, Kelsey is on a quest to save two Indian princes who were cursed to live part of their life as tigers. Kelsey describes the jungle as full of life and adventure since many things live in the jungle. Also they must travel across oceans and seek five dragons that each hold a key to breaking the tiger's curse. Kelsey describes the ocean as endless, with unpredictable weather patterns and many marine life,(she emphasizes sharks because she is afraid of them). So traveling across the ocean is pretty much the same for her as it is for us today, you never know what will happen or what you will see or do. The enviornment is sunny, stormy, hot and cold. The jungle is covered with many exotic plants and animals and usually is roasting hot and sticky according to Kelsey. In the ocean the sky can be bright and sunny, perfect beach weather, or stormy and have violent moody waters twisting and churning. Most of the time the temprature is average but the author does use it to explain events in the story and does use it to her advantage.

I am currently reading a book called Tales of Mystery and Terror by Edgar Allan Poe. It is a collection of his short stories so there are many settings for the many fantastic stories in the book. But for this blog I will write about the one called The Tell-Tale Heart, found on page 88.
The setting of this story is never actually talked about, but I think that it is set in the 1800’s. Most of his stories are and the story talks about a disease, many pieces of literature set in that time period have something to do with some sort of ailment. Also I think that it is set in England, it never says anything about where they are and most of the language used in the … I guess you would have to call it dialogue, sounds very English.
As for the atmosphere it feels like a blanket of fear covering you head to toe. It feels like a sickly gray fog is settling over you. And it feels like the madness is attempting to overtake you. When I read this story I felt this world reaching to drag me down into it. This world of fear and madness. The world of Edgar Allan Poe and the Tell-Tale Heart.

I am reading Specials by Scott Westerfield. The setting of my book is about 300 or so years after the destruction of "Rusty" civilization. The Rusties are what they call us, because all our cities are rusted ruins. The series is about cities where an operation makes people not think for themselves and follow while making them look pretty. The whole society is look-oriented and people are "bubbleheads" to stop wars like we have from happening. The environment/location of the book is in modern day San Fransisco. I can tell because the characters have a river that separates the Uglies from the Pretties, which makes me think that New Pretty Town is on former Alcatraz. The characters also say that there is an ocean to the right and mountains to the east, just like California. In part of the book the two main characters (Tally and Shay) are talking as they cross a desert, and Shay says "The Rusties called it Death Valley,..." which is right on the opposite side of the mountain range. My final clue to the location was that after being led in a big half circle, they arrive where the New Smoke is, which is a city called Diego. Since I had already figured out that they went over the Coastal Mountain Range from San Fransisco, then through Death Valley in a big half circle southward, I guessed that Diego was supposed to be the 300-year-later San Diego.

I am reading “Twisted” by Laurie Halse Anderson.
I think that the time period of the story is modern but it doesn’t say exactly when. I think this because the main character, Tyler, goes to a high school so they talk about clothes a lot. The girls dress showing a lot of skin and the boys wear jeans and Polo’s. When everyone he finds himself in difficult situations he plays a video game called Tophet. The author writes using a lot of slang and modern terms as well.
The place is an upper middle class suburb. Majority of the story takes place in George Washington High School where Tyler is constantly harassed because he vandalized the school which resulted in him having to do community service over the summer. Then he went to a party that he was not supposed to be at and wound up alone with the girl of his dreams who was very drunk. The next day nude pictures were released of her and he was accused. Everyone hates him but no one knows the truth. I know that it is a middle class suburb because many of the people have big houses and expensive clothes.
I would describe the environment of “Twisted” as hazy. No one knows that truth about what happens because rumors spread and then they become exaggerated. When Tyler spray graffiti it was changed into he went to jail. When he tripped and ran into his crush, it was changed to that he shoved her and she broke her leg. When he was accused of taking the pictures it was changed do all sorts of nasty things. No one really knows the truth about anything.

AVellis6: Edgar Allen Poe is an awesome writer!

I am currently reading Into The Wild by John Krakauer. This book is set in the 1990's, and as far as the places Chris McCandless, (the main character), travels, it varies greatly. Some of the places he travels are California, Seattle, Mexico, and ultimately Alaska, his final destination. I think I would describe the environment of this book as "treacherous." I chose this word specifically due to the fact that, even though the account of McCandless's travels does at times seem exciting and adventurous, the book also somewhat describes the dangerous and difficult aspects of his journey, and of course the reader knows what eventually happens to Chris McCandless in the end, since it is clearly stated in the beginning of the book.

I am currently reading City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. I am not positive what time period this book is in, but I am guessing now or in the future. The main characters are acting like any teenager would act today; going out to clubs, dressing in t-shirts and jeans, and even hanging out with friends at special get together meeting places. So far the entire book has taken place in New York City. It is just like the city is now, loud with lots of people most of who live in apartments. There also has been mention of another land where the people of the Clave live. This place is not on any map and the main character, so far has no clue where it is.

The book I am reading is Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer. This story takes place in what I assume is supposed to be in the not too distant future. I think so because of closely what they have and use is exactly the same as ours. It takes place in the state of Virginia. The atmosphere of the book is very tense because a meteoroid has collided with the moon, offsetting life on earth and sending panic and mass destruction throughout the world. People in the book are in struggle for survival and no one is really safe.

I am reading Dreamland by Sarah Dessen.
I don't know the exact time period my book is set in. I believe it is set in present-day times. The main character, Caitlen, is a normal teenager with normal teenage problems just like everyone else. So, I think that is how teenagers nowadays are like too.
The book is taken place in Jackson high school. This is the main place where everything happens because Caitlen spends the majority of her day at school. She is on the cheerleading squad. After her hard day of work she goes right to practice. Cart wheeling her way over. She was always used to being a shadow of her sister, but now that her sister is gone she feels more open. So she made the cheerleading team. As they practice her boyfriend, Rogerson, constantly takes a peek at their practice. Even if it's sitting on the cold, rigid bleachers or even standing on the white tiled wall; with gum in every nook and cranny. He will do it.
Environment: The high school is just like any other school. Team spirit, parking lots filled to the end, and gum on walls almost painting the rainbow. Their days of sunshine are filled with rays, but there are always those days of dark, windy, and stormy days. I would also say the atmosphere of the high school is very safe. They have teachers and others watching the students until the day has gone to an end.

Right now I’m reading “Inkheart” by Cornelia Funke.

I would assume that the book took place in or around the 2000s as seeing how they live in Germany and there are few cities and more old fashioned towns that they visit. Also they don’t talk much about the technology, but they do mention how the traveled in a van at one point and the black cars that the bad guys drive. Otherwise it’s hard to tell what time period they live in.

The region they live in is Germany were they travel to country side to a few small villages. One village in particular is the one that Capricorn, the enemy of the story, resides in. Here no one dares venture because of the rumors Capricorn’s men spread about how it’s where the devil lives. Of course that’s not true. Really it’s just a rundown village that was taken control of by Capricorn.

The books environment always seems to be a bit gloomy and downcast. I believe that it is nearing winter in the book because of cold they say it is getting. Other than the small villages in the country the area they stay in seems pretty beak and boring.

But all together it’s an exciting story worth reading.

The setting of my book, The Rivers of Zadaa, by D.J. MacHale is strange. The book is fantasy, and it is not based on earth, it is based on a “Territory” called Zadaa. This world is a desert, with cities, both underground and above it. In the book, there are territories, which are connected by flumes, and only people designated “travelers” can travel these flumes. The time period is present, but each territory is at a different tech age, some might be more advanced than earth, while others are less advanced. Zadaa is less advanced, still fighting with swords and crossbows. In the book, it says, “I’m guesstimating that the temperature in Zadaa averages about ninety degrees.” Page 3. This shows that the weather on Zadaa was well and truly hot.

J DeVoe6, your book sounds interesting, and good inferences on how it was located in California.

I am currently reading Through My Eyes, by Tim Tebow. This book is an autobiography; therefore there are many different settings through this book. The time period, in the chapter I am at now in this book, it is the early 1990s. I know the time period currently, because Tebow is describing his teenage life and he was that age in the 1990s. Also, Tim describes this point in his life as playing football with his brothers and focusing on schoolwork. The setting currently is Tim Tebow’s home, a farm in Jacksonville, Florida. The setting of this book is thoroughly described when Tim Tebow and his family move to the farm. It is described additionally by the farm chores Tebow was assigned and playing baseball in open pastures. The environment in this book, is the farm is very peaceful and calm. Due to the fact that is in Florida, it is blazing hot in summer, and fairly warm in winter. It is typically sunny with bright blue skies. The farm smells mostly of the horses the Tebow family owned. Although the biography of Tim Tebow’s life has several different settings and time periods, this is where I am currently at in this book.

I recently finished the book Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher and the time period is close to ours, like the 2000s. Their English and clothing seemed very modern.
The setting is in a small city, but really many places in the city. The main character Hannah committed suicide and recorded thirteen reasons why she did this, more specifically who made her do this. In this story the listener, Clay received a map and it had many starred places on it. All of those places are where Hannah is wronged. Clay has to travel to each.
The environment was small and had a couple of neighborhoods and schools. There were some diners and candy shops. There was a park, but that seemed it. Hannah and Clay descrided it as a small place with many large dark secrets.

I am in the middle of In the Shadow of Lady Jane by Edward Charles. The time period is during the 1500's as described on the back summary of the book. Thew setting is in various places in Europe. It first starts off in the Devon estates (one of Lord Henry Grey's many estates). Then as Richard Stocker becomes more powerful throughout the book, gaining more and more control of a variety of things, he travels around England and small cities in Europe with Lord Henry Grey, being his apprentice. Chase loves to geochache, finding hidden treasure troves hidden at different coordinates all over the world. He bikes all over the mountains near his home with is faithful dog, Dexter. Chase rides is mountain bike all over the mountains in his backyard. One side dropped off into a sheer hillside covered by think strands of trees. Everything that has happened in my book so far has taken place in a fictional town called Bag End. Bag End is part of the Shire, which is the large area of land where all the Hobbits live. I'm not completely sure of the time period because the book has a made up system of years and dates, but I guess it takes place in the 15th-16th centuries because there were a lot of simple machines, like water-mills and carriages. Book: Romeo and Juliet

Author: William Shakespeare

Indentifying the setting was quite difficult for it is a play and all I read is dialogue and some subtext explain what the “character/actor” is doing (ex. Romeo and Tybalt fight). So I had to look it up, so according to Sparknotes (the company of the version of my copy of Romeo and Juliet translated to modern English) Romeo and Juliet took during the Renaissance in the Italian city of Verona. The environment of this book is a city in which has a “Prince” and two “wealthy” families (Capulet [Juliet’s family] and the Montague [Romeo’s family]). The two wealthy families has split the whole city into choosing sides involving them in their fight that has gone so long that they don’t even remember why they are fighting in the first place. It has gotten so far as in the death of many.

So Kelsey flies with Dhiren to India on the Flying Tiger to meet Mr. Kadam's boss. The way that Kelsey explains the plane is a peaceful, relaxing private plane. She compares it to a normal airplane. A normal plane would have very tight seats and almost no leg room at all. Whereas the Flying Tiger had your own separate room, fresh blanket, and completely luxurious.

This week I'm reading the City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. I am not really sure about the time period the book takes place in but I think that it takes place in the modern times, like in the 21st century. I think that it took place during this time because of the clothes that the characters in this book wears. Clary, the main character, would wear sandblasted cords with a blue tank top or cutoffs and T-shirts and Isabelle would wear long jeans with various colors of tank tops. This book also takes place in Manhattan. I know that this story took place in Manhattan because it said that they traveled across Manhattan in a carriage to a grave yard where the entrance to Silent City was. In this book it also says that Clary, Jace, and Simon went to the Institute that was located in an old cathedral on Kent Avenue. One of the environments of the book had dry, crackling grasses, and this was the graveyard, and I'm assuming that it would have to be quite sunny for the grasses to be dry and crackling. Another environment in the book was filled with trees that had thick, green leaves, brushes that contained berries in various colors, as well as exotic fruits and flowers in many different colors.

In my book Daniel X:Alien Hunter by James Patterson, The time period is not stated but if I had to guess it is sometime in the future, around 2020. This book takes place in L.A. all throughout the city. It is mainly in the heart of the city I believe because it always talks about the bright lights and the people laughing and partying. The environment is set up to be mainly in a suburb and sometimes very crowded with people. This book also partially took place in a desert. I know these things because throughout the book, it uses sensory details to describe the setting in a very "come to life" way.

I'm currently reading "Uglies" by Scott Westerfeld.

I believe the time period of my book is set in the future. They use hovercrafts for transportation and also have more advanced technology such as robots to do their jobs.

The place is New Pretty Town and Uglyville. New Pretty Town is where all of the pretties go to live once they have been transformed. It's a bright, life-filled town. The pretties who live there party all day and night. The streets are crowded with conga lines and people bungee jumping from buildings. Then in each building you can hear the sound of blaring music and others chattering. There are always parties going on. Now in Uglyville it is the complete opposite. It is a dark, quiet place where everyone there who hasn't transformed yet has the same schedule each and every day. They wake up early; go to school, then bed. The only movements going on outside at night are the guards patrolling the town, making sure no one tries to sneak off to the town of pretties, whose lights you can see from your window and only wish you were there.

Enviroment: New Pretty Town has many colorful lights and decorations. Buildings stand tall on each side of the street, swarming with people. In the middle of the town is Pleasure Garden. Many people go here to relax and get fresh air. In Uglyville there is a giant bridge that is so strong that even after the town crumples in millions of years it will still stand tall. It reaches over the dark, gloomy lake in the middle of the town.

The main setting is in Panem, where she is preparing for her next game and in the arena as a contestant against all the different hunger games winners. Panem, present day North America is where the arena is and where she fights to save her life. The arena is clocked shaped. The enviroment is an arena with lakes, rivers, forests, an ocean around it. The arena makes something go bad every hour as a clock since the arena is built as a clock. This is the enviroment and setting of my book.

The two places are Sitia, where her homeland and family is, as well as where she is getting her magic training; and Ixia, where she was raised, and where she was the commandors (he was the man that overuled the royalties and set up a system that was almost like communism, but he runs it well; the main charecter, Yelena, knows a secret about him that no one else knows)poison tester. The ambience of the world is secrecy. All of the other students dislike her due to her powers, the 'prince' thinks that she is a spy, one of the four magishions thinks that she is a spy also, and she loves the most hated man in Sitia. She was even given a offer where she could return to Ixia and her lover, without being killed, and where she could be the middle man for both of the conflicting sides.

Book: Destined
Author: Aprilynne Pike

I think that the time period for this book is modern times because the styles of clothes that the author describes are whats "in" now. Also, the characters names are pretty common/modern names, like Laurel, Chelsea, and David.

The story is set in the forest, in the kingdom called Avalon, where all of the faeries live. But its also set in a small town. Avalon is like this magical city in which all of the faieries in the world live. The atmosphere is happy at first, but it quickly changes into terror and fear.

Book: The Son of Neptune

Author: Rick Riorden

I am reading my book in preparation for the book that I have been waiting for, The Mark of Athena. The time period is in modern day America, so in the 21st Century. In the beginning of the book, and for the first few books, the story takes in California, but more specifically Camp Jupiter. Then, later in the story, the heroes move up the west coast, stopping in California, Oregon, and Washington in the US. Now they are going through Canada, to Alaska, where they have to battle the Giants. You can tell how modern it is, everything from the way people dress, to the items the Demigods use, such as Duct Tape. The environment feels very nervous and tedious, because if something goes wrong, many lives will be lost. It all seems normal to the mortals, and anything but to the demigods.

@ENunn: That book is one of my favorites, it is a really great read.

The book I am reading is Leven Thumps and the Gateway to Foo by Obert Skye. The place where it is is in Burnt Colvert, Oklahoma, a city that was burned down by a extreme lighting storm. The time period, I am not sure, but I’m assuming modern day because there’s nothing futuristic or historical about the book. The environment of the book is two places, Foo, is a place in the heavens that is overtaken by selfishness and darkness, and the flat plains of Oklahoma.

My book is Twisted by Laurie Halse Anderson. The time period of my book is the same time period we are in now. The book takes place in Ohio, but the exact city is not specified. The environment is very much like our own: the weather, city, and everything about the setting is the same, except for the fact that it's in Ohio instead of Florida. I'm not positive this is correct information, because the book doesn't specify anywhere in the book that I could quote from that I have noticed, so this is an educated guess.

I'm reading "I am the cheese" by Robert Cormier.
I think the time of the event is in 1900s because the story was talking about tapes. The environment of the book is in a neighborhood where the main character lives because the book mainly placed in different streets.
