Blog #18, DUE: Friday, February 15th, 2013

Post the title and author of your blog.

This week you wrote a prequel to the short story The Lottery.  Think about the novel that you're reading now.  If there were a prequel to your novel, what would it be about?  What kinds of plot lines do you think would be in the prequel?  Explain.

I just finished reading Small Steps by Louis Sachar. There is a prequel to the novel, which I read last week, called Holes. The plot in Holes tells about how the main character got to the juvenile Correctional Facility, Camp Green Lake, and what happened there. However, Small Steps is more of a spin-off and a sequel because its about two of the main character (from Holes)'s friends. Their names are Theodore (Armpit) and Rex (X-Ray).

I basically just finished The Kill Order by James Dashner which is the prequel to The Maze Runner. If there was a prequel to this book it would be about how the Sun Flare was so sudden and turned thriving vegetation to barren wasteland in minutes and how the governments crumbled but managed to regain strength again to create the Flare to kill part of the human population. Also, I think the author would include how the government had to use the Flare as the last resort to save the human race.

JDeVoe6: I read Holes too! If I was the main character I would hate to go to a Juvenile Correction Facility.

I am reading Nighshade by Andrea Cremer. If there were a prequel to this book it would be about how the Guardians and Keepers got to be today and how the Keepers were able to subdue Guardian uprisings. Since Guardians and Keepers are humans who can turn into wolves and use "magic" then I think the prequel would include how that came to be. Also, I think the author would include how the Keepers were able to take control over the Guardians and keep controling their lives. Because the main character Calla Tor, is one of the few Guardians to find out about the Keepers brainwashing them. Also the prequel would include why the Scion is so important and why the Keepers and Searchers fight and hate each other so much. So basically, the prequel would be about the entire histories of Guardians, Keeepers, and Searchers, as well as how it got to be this way.

JChoi6: Great plot lines for your idea of The Kill Order's prequel. That book seems very intersting.

I am reading Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone by J. K. Rowling. If a prequel were to be written to Harry Potter, it would probably be about James and Lily, Harry's parents, and the infamous Mauraders and their time at Hogwarts. A few questions that might be answered would be; Lily hated James. How did they end up married? What were James, Sirius, Remus, and Peter like when they were Harry's age? What was it like as a seventh year knowing that once you left Hogwarts, you would be plunged into a violent and dangerous war? It would be awesome to read! >_<

JChoi: A prequel to a prequel! Awesome!

I just started Spirit Walker by Michelle Paver. This novel already has a prequel called Wolf Brother also by Michelle Paver. Wolf Brother is about a young boy who's parents are unable to care for him so they leave him in a pack of wolves, that just recently had cubs. Now the setting of this book is way back when there were hunters and gatherers; so dont get confused! Torak, (the boy) is raised in a family of wolves but the pack leaves behind Torak and one other wolf. The wolf and boy live on their own and are best companions throughout their journey. At the end, Torak joins the Raven Clan and the wolf disappeared and was never to be found again. I think some questions could be made about both books. Some in-particular are; Where did the wolf go? Why did the Raven Clan let Torak stay? and What is the sickness that causes the Clans to die off? There are many more, but these are the most important ones to me.

Molly L: I thought you already read that series...like five times?! I would have made my prequel about that too because those are very interesting questions to think about.

The Kill Order was a really good book. A prequel to that prequel would be super awesome. I wonder if the little girl (Deedee?) is Teresa... ?

I also just finished the Kill Order by James Patterson.
If there was a prequel to this book, it would have more detail about the sun flares (a sun flare stuck the Earth and almost destroyed everything and everyone)and what the government tried to do to help afterwards. It would also explain how the Flare was used and what they thought of it from the government's point of view.

MLangston5:
I love the Harry Potter series! Great blog too!

I am reading, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. If there were a prequel to Little Women, it most likely be about the four sister when they were much younger, what their lives were like, and what kind of a man their father was ( as he is not present in the actual book). Plot lines that would take place would probably go along the lines of how the sisters got along then, and how they all acted when they were much younger.

MalloryD6 said...

CNorton5: Although its been a long time since I have read the Wolf Brother Series, and Spirit Walker for that matter, but I remember them well. Wolf Brother definitely was a great book, and was really what made me begin to read the actual series.

I just finished reading The Storekeeper's Daughter by Wanda Brunstetter. If this book had a prequel, I think it would be about what Naomi and all her brother's and sister's lives were like when their mother was still living. In The Storekeeper's Daughter, it doesn't really talk about Naomi's mother, just about how she died and what it was like for everyone to lose her. Also, I think it would talk about Jim and Linda's relationship before and after they got married. Then, you could probably understand better why Jim and Linda had marriage problems, and why Jim proceeded to do what he did.....

MalloryD6: You better let me read that book before you return it! I can't wait to read the book and find out more what it's actually about! Great blog :)

The book I am currently reading is Matched by Ally Condie. If there were to be a prequel to the book, it would most likely be about how the society was set up and ideas from the government point of view. It would most likely contain life before the set societies and how people would adapt to the change in life styles.

MalloryD6: If that was written, I would definitely read it! It makes sense too especially since the father isn’t mentioned, so you could get backstory on him.

I am reading the Scorch Trials by James Dashner. If I was to write a prequel before this book and after the Maze Runner I would write about the WICKED. I would write about how they reviewed the Gladers response and how the graded the Girls response. I would write about how they were planning Stage 2. I think it would have a disturbing twist. Like they would plan to keep Teresa with the Gladers, but when Thomas isn’t killed she would be moved.

I heard that book was really good!! Your prequel sounds really good too!!!!

If there was a prequel to my novel, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, it would be about how the mice built the earth and how they started it up, along with how they were studying the ultimate question in the universe. There would be some people who figured out that the mice were observing them, and would have to be eliminated. There would also probably be mice that thought that it was unethical to do such testing on humans, and tried to revolt. This would be more focused on the mice perspective, with maybe one main human character, but the rest mice.
MLagston5: It would also be an interesting twist if someone saw into the future and saw who Harry was going to be, and how they would die.

I am reading Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare and the prequel would be about the past life's of Will and Jem. They are two shadowhunters that saveTessa, the main character. They don't really give a lot of background information about Will nor Jem, so you don't understand their past life as much as Tessa's. The prequel would also be about the past life of the institute itself, the house of the shadowhunters

KaylaN5: that would be a perfect idea for a prequel! Nice job!

I'm reading Life of Pi by Yann Martel. Pi gets stranded out at sea on a life boat with just a tiger. Before Pi gets stranded, he tells a brief story of his childhood life. If there were a prequel to Life of Pi, it would probably a more detailed description of Pi's childhood. Pi's father was a zoo owner so Pi would probably describe his life among the animals.

MLangston5: I love Harry Potter! Nice blog!

I am reading The Killing by Robert Muchamore. This is the fourth book in the Cherub series. There isn't a lot of time between the books but there could be a prequel to the whole series. The books are about kids that live at a school for child agents for the MI5. They train for missions that only kids could blend in on. A prequel to the series could be about two different things. It could be about the whole Cherub organization and how it started. It could include details about why the MI5 needed kids and what mission was the reason for Cherub. The second option would be a prequel about the main character, James and his sister, Lauren. They went through a rough time before being brought into Cherub so this prequel could go into detail about their previous life.

JChoi6: I read the Maze Runner but I didn't read the others. I heard they weren't as good. That sounds interesting though!

The book I’m now reading is Sherlock Holmes: A Study in Scarlet (book 1) by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. If there was a prequel to this book it would have to be about Holmes’s and Watson’s adventures before they met and became partners. It would probably tell of what got Holmes into the detective business and what some of those cases were like. It would also have to tell the story of Watson when he was still a soldier and what his battle experiences were like (I think he fought somewhere in Africa). It would be interest if a prequel was ever made for Sherlock Holmes because you would be able to learn more about the two friends’ pasts.

KBelvin5: I hear that The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a really good book. I haven’t read it before but just hearing what you think the prequel should be makes me really want to read it now.

I am currently reading Have A Little Faith by Mitch Albom. If there were to be a prequel to this book it would have to be about the Reb's life before he was diagnosed with lung cancer. It would probably tell of how he got to be such a faithful and grateful man of life. It would tell of how to keep relationships even through challenges they faced. The Reb is a wonderful and thankful man and the prequel would be written of his perspective and how he came to be the "Reb." This would be in the prequel because the story line of this book is about living life to the fullest and the Reb has done that.

KPhillips5: If there were to be a prequel of that book it would definitely be about that. It sounds like a really good book too. I should read it!

I am currently reading Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper.
If there is a prequel in this story, it would be about how Melody got a handicap. The prequel could include about Melody lost her voice and her sights. Then her real mother lefts her alone and someone adopts her and Melody started to learn alphabets.

JChoi6- I like about the prequel of the prequel. It sounds very interesting.

I am currently reading The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks. I think that later if there were a prequel, in the story Logan and Elizabeth would get married. Since Elizabeth already has a child I think that Logan would have to face challenges such as parenting.I think that if there were a prequel, most of the story would be based on him as a parent and the challanges that he would have to face. I also think that in the prequel they would also have another child since logan loves spending time with elizabeth's son.
KaylaN:I read that book! I actually just finished the prequel to that. You might find some things that are similar to what you predicted.

Book: Now is not the time for Running
Author: Michael Williams

I Have literally just started this book about three hours ago. So far I think its an amazing book. there is no prequel to this book. I believe that the prequel would start out t\with how the soldiers got there and how doe got involved in soccer. i think it would also have a strait foreword plot line.

JChoi6: I started to read that book but was like no. Its kinda of weird.

I'm reading The Lost stories by John Flanagan. If there was a prequel to this book it would be about the first war with Morgarath. I think it would explain how Morgarath got his power and why he hated the Araluens. I also think it would tell about Will's dad and his family story.

MLangston5-That would be a great book and to read if they made one.

The book that I am reading is The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan. There are two more books in the series before it. The Mark of Athena is about Percy and Jason going together after switching to each others camps. The prequel is basically what adventures and battle happened before to help them fulfill a dire prophecy to stop the evils from destroying the planet in the battle that is powerful enough to destroy humans releasing evil spirits from the underworld. The previous books show how the characters adapt to the different culture.

@MLangston5: That seems very interesting! I would love to see how Harry's parents were.

I am reading The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. A good prequel to this story would be centered on the actual argument between Poseidon, Zeus, and Hades. This is the center of the conflict of the book. That would set a strong base of understanding in the plot of the book. So far this book has been stimulating and a fast page turner. I am close to finishing it and moving on the second book.

I am reading the City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare. There is a prequel to this novel called City of Bones. The plot in City of Bones tells about how Clary and Jace met each other and how they found the Mortal Cup, one of the Mortal Instruments, only to have Valentine, who they found out was their father, take it. This plot was included in the prequel because in the City of Ashes, Jace is going to have a trial with the Inquisitor because the Clave believes that Jace is working for Valentine. He is meeting with the Inquisitor so that the Clave can confirm that Jace is not lying because of the Soul Sword can tell if any Shadowhunter is lying. The plot in the prequel is necessary because it makes the events that occur in the City of Ashes make sense. For example, if you did not know that Valentine was Jace's father, you would be confused when Maryse Lightwood along with all of the other Shadowhunters don't trust Jace.

MLangston5: I agree that if there was a prequel to the Sorcerer's Stone it would be about Harry's parents spending time at Hogwarts.

In my book Daniel X by James Patterson, if there was a prequel I would think it would involve one of Daniel X's ancestors explaining why the aliens have come to earth and exactly what they want with us. A few questions that might be answered would probably be: Why aliens have come to earth? What is Daniel X's job to protect the earth? How did the Aliens get to earth. I think all of those questions would have been answered in the Prequel of my book Daniel X.

MLangston5, I loved all of the Harry Potter books. How do you like them?

I just finished reading Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks. If this book had a prequel it would be about Katy's life when she was first dating her abusive husband, before she knew he was like that. If she had known this would she still have married him? Those are the questions she faced now but they never gave details on what he was like when they were dating so this could make up the prequel. It would be an interesting read.

VanessaG6- I also read that book, it is fantastic. That is a good idea for a prequel and it would be cool if they made one for it! Good job!

I am reading Summer Ball by Mike Lupica. A prequel to this book would be about being who you are and always trying your best. Also it would be about how the only limits you have are the ones you set yourself. This is because throughout the book Danny, who is really small, is complaining about how he is too small and that he is not good anymore and has no future in basketball. The only thing keeping him at the summer camp is his friends. His friends and coaches help him realize he is good enough but that he is limiting himself because of personal issues.

ENunn5: That sounds like a really cool book.

Well I just finished Scarlet by Marissa Meyer. And it hass a prequel called Cinder.

Many of the same plot lines are present in the book. Like the running from a higher authority. Also falling in love with some one who you can't have, and then the discovery of something unimaginable.

JChoi6: That book sounds very sci-fi like. I want to read it now! Yay! Something to read!

Book: Cherub Book 2: The Dealer

Author: Robert Muchamore

Because my book already has a book that comes before it, the prequel would be one for the entire series. The sequel would be about Charles Henderson, the British spy that started CHERUB, and his creation of CHERUB and his boys' adventures during WWII. The agents would infiltrate Nazi bases and gather intelligence that would help the Allies win the war. The story would then conclude with Henderson's Nazi spy wife killing him, but not before CHERUB became established. Then, the prequel would begin to introduce the 21st Century, beginning Book 1 of the series.

@MLangston5: That sounds like a book that would be really enjoyable. Great idea!

I am currently reading Hard Love authored by Ellen Wittlinger. If there was a prequel about by book it would probably be about how John got interested writing. A majority of the book right now is about John writing his magazines. I think that in the prequel it should talk about if there was like a tragedy that happened or something like that to trigger the sudden interest in writing.

TCummings6: I can't wait to see the movie! Do you think it will be as good as the book?

I am still reading The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells. If there was a prequel for this book it would be about Dr. Moreau creating his desire to create human intelligence in animals. I think the author would include information on how he obtained his island own secluded island. I think the author would also include his very first experiments on animals. The author would also shed some light on Dr. Moreau’s past, as to reveal if there really is a method to his madness.

AStutz5 said...

I am currently reading the book, The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks. If there was a prequel to this book it would be about Logan enlisting into the Army. The plot line would go up to the point to where Logan found the picture of Beth in the sand during the war. The prequel would include Logan's life about how he felt loss and how he wanted to be a part of something. Logan wanted to do his part in the war by being a soldier.

TCummings6: I want to read that book and the prequel sounds like it flows into the book.

Book: Divergent

Author: Veronica Roth

Divergent is placed in post-apocalyptic Chicago. Chicago is divided into five Factions: Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite. Each faction is based on a human trait they believe the humans before them didn’t have enough of, leading to their downfall. These traits are selflessness, peacefulness, honesty, intelligence, and bravery. The people in each faction intensely try to become the human trait there faction represents. But at a certain age the people are tested to see which faction suits them the most and they get to choose which faction they want to join permanently.

I think if there was a prequel to this book it would be about how Chicago got into its state. It probably would start in the society before the downfall and lead up to its downfall. It would explain how the citizens reacted and how the new society was created. The prequel would probably also include not only how Chicago fell but how other cites/states/countries fell and how they are now (in the book) controlled.

KPhillips5: You have really good ideas of what a prequel of Sherlock Holmes could be about.
