Book: The Great Gatsby

Author: F. Scott Fitzgerald

Character: Jay Gatsby

Jay Gatsby lives in a huge mansion in West Egg where he hosts huge parties every night. Being neighbors with Nick Carraway he uses him to get into contact with Daisy Buchanan (Nick’s Cousin). Jay Gatsby was from a poor family and did whatever he could (illegal stuff) to become wealthy to impress Daisy.

1.Daisy Buchanan- He would “like” Daisy because he did whatever he could to win her back from Tom Buchanan. Such as participating in illegal activity to become wealthy. This really shows *Spoiler* when at the end of the book when Daisy hits and kills Myrtle, Gatsby intends to take the blame for he loves her.

2.Wealth- He went to great lengths (illegal activity) to become wealthy. From a young age he hated his state in poverty wanting to become wealthy; this is shown particularly when he quits college after only two weeks because he couldn’t stand his job as a janitor he needed, to pay the tuition.(Fitzgerald 105)

3.The Color Yellow- He would “like” the color yellow because like all men (and some women) he loves his car and gets it in the peculiar color yellow.

4.Past- Gatsby is obsessed with the past; he wants to have Daisy say she never loved Tom and for them to get married from her house just like it was supposed to be five years ago. (Fitzgerald 116)

5.Dreams- Gatsby is a huge dreamer; he puts whatever at stake for his dreams for example his freedom [not going to jail].

Book: The Woman Warrior

I think that the most important word for the chapter I am reading would have to be "strength." Strength is a central theme in this book, and is illustrated by the tales the narrator tells of her childhood, such as her mother, an immigrant, becoming a respected medical scholar in America. She also tells of traditional Chinese folk tales, mainly with female protagonists.

I did not do blog twenty two.

I have recently finished feed by M.T. Anderson.
The most important word in this book is “forget” as shown here:

I feel like we’re the only two of us who like remember the, like, the thing.

People want to forget

You can’t blame them

This word is important because Titus struggles as the world around him “forgets” the very event that scars his brain and puts his dearest friend on the verge of death. He then has to carry the burden of remembering his friend as she slips away from reality. Even she (his dear friend) struggles not to “forget”, as her feed (a computer chip in the brain) breaks and her memories of her past evaporate into nothingness.

DXi5:

I've been thinking about reading that book, is it any good? Would you recommend it? Your blog makes it seem like it is. Nice Blog.

AStutz5: I've heard of that book; your blog post makes the book seem really relatable. Can you give me a summary?

I missed blog 25.

I just finished reading The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

"If that was true he must have felt that he lost the old, warm world, payed a high price for living too long with a single dream. He must have looked up at an unfamiliar sky through frightening leaves and shivered as he found what a grotesque thing a rose is and how raw the sunlight was upon the scarcely created grass. A new world, material without being real, where poor ghosts, breathing dreams like air, drifted fortuitously about...like that ashen, fantastic figure gliding toward him through the amorphous trees." (Fitzgerald 161)
This paragraph is the main character and narrator, Nick Carraway, describing Gatsby's thought right before he was killed. Gatsby was depressed because he had lost the only thing that mattered to him, Daisy. The reason why I chose this paragraph is because the language is so advanced and descriptive. If the author would have used simpler words, this part would not have been as emotional and relatable. Also, I love the figurative language, "where poor ghosts, breathing dreams like air, drift fortuitously about."

DXi5: This is definitely one of my favorite books I've read. Are you planning on watching the movie sometime?

In my book Lawn Boy returns by Gary paulsen, A event that just happened was Joey powdermik, a boxer in the book that sponsor's Lawn Boy, was threatened that if he did not forfit the match, his dojo would be burned down. But he did not forrfit the match and competed in the fight and won. And when the man went to burn down the dojo, police men were already there to stop him and he was arrested and taken to jail. I think that if i was in that situation, i would have done the same thing. I would have informed the police unit and then fight the fight and hope that everything would fall together perfectly. And if it did not, i would have had to build my bussiness back together from the ground up.

BNguyen5: I loved that book. it is still one of my favorites. The event you were on was a big part of the main story

I currently am reading the book A Part of the Sky by Robert Newton Peck. The main character is Robert Peck a thirteen year old farm boy living in the rural town of Learning, Vermont. Robert's father had died and running the family farm is now his responsibility and at the same time keep up with school. Robert is forced to pay the monthly mortgage and on top of that his ox had died while plowing the field and his milk cow had dried up.

1) Poetry- Robert had promised Mrs. Malcolm that he would write a few poems over the summer and Robert learned to appreciate poems and then wrote some for himself as a way of releasing his feelings.

2)Money- Robert had grown up too fast with the death of his father and every month is a battle to raise 12 dollars to pay the house mortgage. He yearns to have the money to pay of his farm.

3)New England Patriots- Robert is a family man and cares deeply for his mother and his aunt. He would like the Pats because they would be the football team representing where he is from.

4)Trader Joe's- In the later chapters Roberts and his family are braving out the drought but food is becoming scarce. He started to get hired only wanting to be paid with food. He would like a Trader Joe's because they have lots of inexpensive foods and sampling booths.

5)Farming- Robert takes lots of pride in his work and after a long year of taking care of his farm, he can enjoy the revenue it brings him and enjoy the reward for his hard work.

AStutz5, That's and interesting name for a book. good job on the blog though i think forget would be the most important word in the book.

My book is A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare (just coincidence it's our in class book as well) and the most important word is love. As we all know, the main plot is about two lovers who run away so they can live together. When two others chase after them, and fairies get involved, all the relationships are changed and must be changed back. This word can be found in the sentence "True he hath my love..."

DXi5, very descriptive blog, also a very good story. Good job.

I am currently reading the book Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. In this book there was a situation were Amy and Jo were dangerously ice skating together, when all of a sudden Amy got behind Jo and fell into the frozen ice cold water. Amy became very sick from this. She had gotten anemone from being careless while ice skating.

In this situation while ice skating, I would have warned Amy that the ice was so thin in certain areas since Amy is the youngest and isn't as observant. But if she had fallen in any way I would have helped her out by giving her my coat, start a fire, and find help.

DXi5: That is like the perfect description.

Blog #24:

I am currently reading the book Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. One of the main characters is Jo. She is 15 years old. She is very tall, thin, and tan skinned. She has grey eyes, she has long thick hair.

Jo would like the page Ice skating on Facebook. She is always loving to ice skate. Jo also would like a Nature page because Jo loves to be outside and look at the beauty. Another page she would like would be hair designs because Jo is always looking for new ways to do her hair if its in a bun, if its down, or anything.

LWoodward5: I love that first phrase.
