LAST BLOG, DUE TODAY! :)

Take some time thinking back to the whole school year.  You can go to my website and revisit each 9 weeks to remind yourself the types of activities we did: http://www.oncoursesystems.com/school/webpage.aspx?id=482087  For example, there was the Civil Rights unit, Glogs, Communism and the 1950s, field trips, books (Lay That Trumpet in Our Hands, Shakespeare, etc.), etc.  What did you enjoy about your school year in our REACH class?  Be specific and write a lot!  Way more than 50 words are required!  Also, if you have anything that you would like changed or ideas for improvement, please feel free to leave those ideas, too!  As a teacher, we prefer to get ideas straight from the most knowledgeable source -- you all!

Also, respond to TWO other classmates.  TWO classmates.

In REACH class this year, I enjoyed going to UF and Devil's Millhopper. So basically all of the fieldtrips we took. Also I enjoyed States (of NHD) it was very exciting hearing my project being called to be at the finals later on in the day. The Subway at the school was very filling and I enjoyed that too. Somethings that I would recommend is that you give the next year's class a harder time. Just Kidding! I just feel like having more time making our iMovies because we only had 15 days basically. Bye, thaanks again for everything.

This year in REACH has been enjoyable and full of very fun activities. My favorite part of REACH this year has been the Shakespeare unit. I liked this the best because it was a way to learn while having a ton of fun. We learned so much about Shakespeare while performing and having a great time. I also enjoyed when we finished Lay that Trumpet in Our Hands in the bottom of Devils Millhopper. I enjoyed this so much because again because we were still learning and having fun. Along with the field trip we took while reading Lay that Trumpet in Our Hands the book was also very good which made class very fun the days we read. I love the books we read all year including Fallen Angels. NHD was fun and not fun at the same time. It was a great experience and some of the times fun but in the end I thought that the projects were all really cool. Overall REACH was very fun and a great experience and by far my two favorite classes this school year.

I really enjoyed this year, probably even more than last year, even though this year we had way more work. I loved doing NHD. There was definitely a lot of work involved, but it helped me learn that I can’t wait until the last minute to do everything. I also really enjoyed reading the books. Great choices! The trip to Devil’s Millhopper was not only fun, but I actually could picture the way things would have been in the book. I did learn way more about the Vietnam War than I had ever known. I didn’t even know what the purpose was of the war before this year! Doing the independent projects from the Vietnam War was probably the best way to learn about it while the iMovie NHD people were still working on their project. It made learning about the certain topics easier, in my opinion, than just having you stand up there and talking while a slide show played behind you. We had variety of teaching skills and ways, but the review at the end of each presentation also helped. Shakespeare was probably my favorite part of the whole year though. I loved acting it out and the action definitely helped us understand what was going on. Maybe next year, you could have groups practice and perform part of the book instead of having them wing it, because then there would be way less word mistakes and it they would know how to perform it better, too. Also, thank you for explaining everything about the book along the way, because if you had not, I don’t think I would understand any of it! Other than that, I really don’t have any other suggestions than that. Thanks for being such an AMAZING teacher! I will definitely miss you when I move on to high school next year! I will come and visit though and help students with NHD websites if you would like too!

What I enjoyed most about this year in our REACH class was the whole fourth quarter. It was after FCAT so everything was laid back and fun. I really enjoyed the first book that we read in these nine weeks, which was Fallen Angels. It was interesting and helped us grasp the realities of the Vietnam War, which we had been learning about. It was a type of book that I would choose to read outside of school instead of being forced to read at school. After we finished reading that book, I really enjoyed the Shakespeare unit. Acting out the book instead of reading it really contributed to how much fun it was. I also enjoyed learning about Shakespeare’s language and writing our own script to perform in front of the class. Overall, this year in REACH was probably the most enjoyable out of the three years I have been in REACH, especially the fourth nine weeks.

Cameron- I agree about the Shakespeare unit! It was probably the best part of the whole year and it is so much fun!

There were many things this year during our REACH class that I enjoyed. It was obvious that the class's goal was to teach us in a way that would still be interesting and keep our attention. At first I was dreading NHD, thinking it would take over my life and be a ton of work, but since it could be about a topic of our choice, I learned a lot of things that I never would have without it. It opened my mind to different topics, and showed me how far you can get researching something that interests you. Also, the in class reading was great. The fact that the books had a deeper meaning, and would teach us a lesson in life was definitely a bonus. I feel like the reading taught me just as much as the actual learning activities. It made the reading class turn into a history class too. The books that we read, especially Fallen Angels, put a lot of things into perspective. And being able to act out the scenes in A Midsummer Night's Dream definitely made it much more enjoyable, and it made it make a lot more sense opposed to just reading it as a class. Also, it was evident that the teachers worked very hard to give us all of the tools and information we will need going into high school. Like being able to go the the UF library for research, and learning how to research more accurately. Plus our new skills in analyzing will most likely pay off significantly in high school. It was a great year and I learned so much!

Geena~ I liked NHd too but we might be the only ones!

My favorite unit this year was most definitely Communism and the 1950's. I absolutely LOVED watching "I Love Lucy"! I am so happy that this class exposed me to older TV shows that are 20 million times better than TV shows today. Although I loved that, it was not the only thing I liked about our 1950's unit. I think that learning about life 60 years ago is very interesting, because it really was not that long ago, and so much has changed since then. Also, Communism seemed to be a really hot topic back then, and it was interesting to see how many people couldn’t trust each other in the United States because of speculation that they were Communist. I also really enjoyed our Devil’s Millhopper field trip. I hadn’t been there since I was really, really little, so it was cool for me to see the sinkhole. The fact that it had a lot to do with Trumpet and we finished the book in the sinkhole was really neat. (There was also that man who had really REALLY short shorts on and was running up and down the stairs, so we all had a good laugh). Anyway, another unit I really enjoyed was our Vietnam War unit. I find learning about war really interesting, and I didn’t know very much about the Vietnam War before we studied it. I also really enjoyed the Shakespeare unit because it was so entertaining. Our Shakespeare scripts that we had to write and perform were straight up HILARIOUS. Overall, this year in REACH was completely amazing. I really feel like the REACH students become sort of like a family, because we were really able to bond through the tough times of NHD and all of the time we spent together. REACH gave us all really great opportunities to excel, because we were able to do projects and activities that normal classes didn’t do. I would like to thank the teachers for making my 8th grade year so amazing, because I really loved REACH. I know I could write a book about our adventures throughout the year, but I think I will stick to the simplified version of that. :)

I thought R.E.A.C.H was a lot of fun. It was so much better than normal reading and language arts classes. I thought that the National History Day Project was a really good learning experience. One thing I really liked learning about this year was the Vietnam War. I had never really learned about the war in my life until this year. I also really liked having the lockdowns in our 5th period. Reading the book Falling Angles was a lot of fun it was so funny. And I will never forget how that man left the dog tags in the hut. Question number FOUR. Shakespeare was really fun to read too. And the movie was really weird. A lot of things amazed me when we learned about the 1950’s. For example that one list of how you can be a good wife. R.E.A.C.H was a great experience.

Over all I enjoyed this year, for the majority of the year we only worked on NHD and I had fun creating my documentary and learning about McCarthy. I like learning about the 1950s&60s because it helped me to understand how McCarthy affected history and put his actions into the perspective of someone who living back then. I already knew a lot about the civil rights movement but our unit on it was a nice reminder. Learning about communism and the Vietnam War was fascinating because I had heard so much about this war but never fully understood it. Learning about the Vietcong and the fighting that was done on both sides was gruesome but for that reason I think that it will stay in my memory. Each of the stories that we read during this year had a different format and topic then what I usually read, my favorite was A Midsummers Night Dream. I have really had fun with the Shakespeare unit, it is a completely different kind of subject then what we have studied earlier this year and I like being able to interact more in class.

This year in REACH the thing I enjoyed most was this year was the Vietnam unit. Due to my interest in war and other military occupations, I also had this as my NHD topic so I already had a good comprehension and understanding of the topic. This made the unit easy for me so I didn’t have to stress over studying or worry if I would fail the test on the unit. Also we read a book called Fallen Angels which I really enjoyed. It also was interesting due to the idea of a first person book on war. Although it was fictional it felt like a real story. The author also did a great job creating an emotional bond between you and the characters of the book. When one of the characters would die you would feel a sorrow over their death. I also enjoyed the Shakespeare unit. Liked getting to act out the scenes in front of the class; it made the reading of an otherwise boring thing to me become interesting to me. Although sometimes it was difficult to understand what Shakespeare was saying in his writings due to his use of modern English.

This year in R.E.A.C.H., what I most enjoyed was when we studied The Vietnam War. I liked the topic because of my interest in war and military. I also liked the fact that student got to really study certain parts of the war and then teach the rest of the class. Also I enjoyed this unit because for our NHD topic it was based on The Vietnam War and I was already knowledgeable in that topic. I also enjoyed not the entire Shakespeare unit, but the part where we acted out and watched the movie. Lastly what I enjoyed most of all was when we had lockdown drills and got to skip class and goof off. I got to express my passion for protecting this class and representing my strength by guarding our class with my Zorro. I also remember when I asked Sam what page he was on and he responded with “Maybe once on tristmas.” I also thoroughly enjoyed reading Fallen Angels, because I thought it was a really virtuous yet it had a funny touch in it and I appreciated that. That is what I enjoyed in R.E.A.C.H. this year. QUESTION FOUR.

Geena, I also enjoyed doing NHD, for the most part. Cameron, I totally forgot about the feild trip. What a great time.

CFaulk5 said...

Kate- I also thought that NHD was cool because we were able to choose a topic that interested us.

This year has been full of fun adventures and great memories in the 2011-2012 REACH school year. A few of those memories include reading in class, experiencing educational field trips, for example to the sink hole in Mill hopper, completing NHD, learning about the gruesome details of the Vietnam war, and performing the odd literature of William Shakespeare. Not only has this year been wonderful, as in the learning experience, but I have found myself grow as a person and mature to a whole new level. The social experience has also been rewarding because my true friends have shown through. NHD was a big part of REACH this year and thus it has had a big impact on me. NHD and REACH would have not been the same without the friendship and partnership of my best friend Leah who not only helped me with NHD but contributed to me having an awesome year. Even though NHD and all of its troubles have not always been fun, I can surely say that overall it has been a wonderful year. Acting out Shakespeare and all of its glory has been really fun. I liked that this year, working on a team has been vital in accomplishing a project such as doing the poetry slam and writing Shakespearian plays. It has helped me to become a better team player. I would say that though this year was not perfect, I do not think I would change a thing because it is run by amazing teachers who know how to teach you something and teach it well. As for closing words, I would like to say that I am going to miss both Ms. Thomas and Ms. Haro and will forever respect the way they have affected my life. Thank you for an amazing year.

My favorite thing about this year was definitely doing NHD. I enjoyed being able to spend an extended period of time working towards one goal, and I showed myself how hard I could work and what I was capable of. Also, watching the final product come together over time was really exciting and eventually watching the finished copy at home is something that I’ll never forget. I loved going different places in the school to record the narration because the freedom was nice and the change in atmosphere helped make working on the project enjoyable, instead of staying in one all of the time. I also enjoyed the field trip to Devil’s Millhopper because I don’t remember ever going before then and it was really pretty scenery to sit and read. Learning about Communism and the 1950’s was interesting to me because it was something I had never really heard about before. I knew of the Cold War but I didn’t know who it was between or what it was about or even what was meant by “cold war.” It was neat to learn about this period of history because it wasn’t very long ago but it seems that things have changed drastically since then. I honestly don’t think there is anything that I would even consider changing about REACH because as much work as it was, it always came to be worth it and as a whole, it was an amazing class to be part of. There have been so many memories and even though my folder filled with all my NHD papers is too fat to close, I’m going to keep it forever!!

There were a multitude of activities we did in REACH that I extremely enjoyed. I learned a variety of new things but had a fun and interesting time doing so. To start off, taking a field trip to the U.F. Library was a great experience. Not only did it allow me to expand the number of sources I had for my NHD project, but it exposed me to many aspects of the library and introduced me to various different databases. Being able to acquire the sources this way was extremely interesting. Another thing I enjoyed was the various books we read. The books were super entertaining and I really like the way you use the books related to our assignments. For example, analyzing an aspect of Fallen Angels provided an interactive way of writing because Fallen Angels was an entertaining book. I also enjoyed reading Shakespeare because it opened my eyes to a new style of writing where you really have to dig deep for what the characters are saying. Acting out the scenes was beneficial to me understanding what was going on. Another excellent part of the year was travelling to Devil's Millhopper to read the last parts of Lay That Trumpet in Our Hands and have a Socratic Seminar. It was a fun way of having class in the bottom of a sinkhole, and I really enjoyed it! Finally, I would like to thank you so much for preparing me for high school. All of the lessons we did, such as analysis practice of poetry, Fallen Angels, NHD, and Shakespeare, will be extremely helpful along the way in high school. The lessons were informative, yet interesting to learn about, and I think that is an outstanding way to teach. It has been a fun year!

During the span of this school year, I feel like I have learned more in REACH than any of the previous years. When it comes to the books we read together in class, I actually really enjoyed Fallen Angels. I have never been into a war based books, but I felt like the book's pace was ideal for me and that the storyline had good lessons to it. Shakespeare was an interesting unit, and I enjoyed seeing how the language “evolved” over the years. However, it was also difficult for me. I also really enjoyed the section on Communism and other aspects in the 1950's. I felt like that in past school years we always focused on the late history and the "today", but never anything within the last few decades that are still important aspects of our daily lives. All of the information we learned this year was brand new, and I think that’s what makes it interesting compared to something we’ve learned about every year since 4th grade. And, believe it or not, I even enjoyed working on NHD. Despite the fact it was the most difficult school assignment I've ever done, it seemed like there were a lot of memories made, and it will always be something I remember this school year by. When I think back on the kids I knew in middle school, I’m not going to think about the kids in P.E. or science class, I’m going to think of the kids that I’ve worked alongside for three years.

The thing I most enjoyed about R.E.A.C.H. this year was taking the few field trips that we had. Even though the first field trip was to the University of Florida for research about NHD, I still enjoyed the freedom of the trip and especially being away from school. The pizza was good too. I also liked the other field trip we took to Devil's Millhopper because yet again we got to be away from school and I also liked the trip because it created a good atmosphere for the part of Lay That Trumpet in our Hands that we were reading. Another thing I enjoyed about R.E.A.C.H. was having the extra privileges during NHD like being able to do extensive research on the mac's and being allowed across the school to record our script and to have some privacy while we worked on our script. One thing that I enjoyed learning about was the Vietnam War because it related to my NHD topic and my topic got me very interested in the actual war. Many of the things that we learned about the war through presentations and Fallen Angels surprised and interested me as well. Another thing I enjoyed learning about was our Shakespeare unit. I enjoyed learning about Shakespeare because it was interesting to learn about what was known as one of the greatest writers in the history of English Literature and how he used a different form of modern English in his plays. One thing I liked about Shakespeare was how he had the skill to incorporate humor into his plays and how he also had the capability to write comedy and tragedy plays and have them all be very well written. Another thing I liked about Shakespeare was how he had the skill to use iambic pentameter in his plays and had it all rhyme. It must have taken true skill to have written in such a way.

In REACH class this year I learned a lot and had loads of fun! One of my favorite parts of the year was taking the field trip to the sinkhole. It was really fun to read out side with everybody. Reading Fallen Angels was really fun for me just because the book was really good. It was also fun having the REACH party. I think the most interesting part of this year in REACH was the civil rights unit. It really interested me and I had fun making the glogster about it. I was glad to have become partners with many different people this year during certain projects. Because of that, I made some new friends. Although it was a lot of work, I really liked NHD. I could not have done it though without my partner Dylan Maillart. It was really cool looking at our projects when they were finished and reflecting on others peoples. I also enjoyed showing them to the judges. I learned TONS about my topic too. It was a very interesting topic to research. Going to the UF library and getting star bucks was awesome also. Overall, I loved this year, learned a lot, and made new friends. The REACH program has truly been a fun experience for me. The food was good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My favorite part of this eighth grade year of 2011-2012 in the REACH classes was when we went to Devil's Millhopper, read the end of Trumpet, and had the student run Socratic Seminar on the book Lay That Trumpet In Our Hands by Susan McCarthy. This was a fun activity in the obvious ways, such as the fact that we got to miss school to go, it was a cool, little nature 'hike', and Devil’s Millhopper in itself is just a very fun place to visit. Some of the other, less obvious reasons were the fact that it was student run; we could decide what to talk about, who gets to talk, when to switch questions, and that sort of thing. The book was a very interesting story and its ending, unbeknownst to us before we went for we read the ending when we got there, included the sinkhole in Reesa’s backyard refilling with water like it used to. This was the connection and the reason for us to visit Devil’s Millhopper, a very large sinkhole. Also, it was almost like a bonding for the REACH students, because only we traveled, talked, and hung out together. It was a very fun experience.

Rachel-
Me, too! The field trips were just so fun. I loved the fact that we were the only ones to miss school, and I think that it was a bonding experience for the REACH classes.

Cameron-
The Shakespeare unit was very fun, for our first introduction to this amazing American Literature it was so interesting.

I enjoyed many things this year in R.E.A.C.H. Going in chronological order the first thing that really caught my attention was Communism and the 1950's. Learning about that was very interesting because i always wanted to learn about the Red Scare and Communism. Also the Space Race started around that time and i always wanted to know about the details of what happened scientifically and politically to the Space Race; That was an important time for our country because we were at the height of our power. NHD was fun because it was a nice change of pace and i had fun doing it because going in depth and into the very last detail surprises you and interests you even further. The Vietnam War was great because i always liked learning about war and what happened in the war. Also you can add your own personal opinion about what happened like what the general should have done or why we had to go into that war. One last thing that was great was Shakespeare because i was never really into him and i wasn't looking forward to it but his play's and poems really drew me into his work and who he is as a person; Also the big question if Shakespeare was really a person or if he was just a pen name or multiple people using the same pen name to write there plays. Many things were great this year but those things were the best.

SRosenberger5 said...

Leah- I just put my NHD things away a couple of weeks ago and I was shocked to see the FILLED 70 page notebook and additional folder, but it was actually sad to see all of the things put away for the first time in a year.

Kate- I was also dreading NHD... I think that they make NHD sound a lot worse than it actually is so we feel a bit better when we finally start working.

The 8th grade reach was my most favorite reach class. It was much fun; more than the last two years combined while I have been in the program. My most favorite was the readings, especially “Lay that Trumpet in Our Hands,” by Susan Carol McCarthy. I don’t usually read books in the history genre, because it’s hard to find books that will not bore you to death, but both the Trumpet and the “Fallen Angels” by Myers created believable characters that you can relate to and remarkable story lines that kept you reading. In the Trumpet, I especially loved the metaphors that McCarthy used. Particularly at the end how Reesa was comparing her family with what the sky was like with its clouds and blue patches. The ending was very amiable also; the way the long dead lake was turned into a geyser was such a dramatic and amazing end to everything that had happened in the book, especially the tragic past of the house Reesa moved into; the past of the post lady, whose name I don’t remember and her fiancé. I also loved how I learned a lot about History in this class. The Civil Rights movements and the 1950s, the age of communism were periods of history I had minute knowlegde. Now I can say I knew the what the historical context of the US was back then. Historical Context was another cool term I learned in this year's REACH. I sort of wish we could've read all of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and compared the ending to the funny movie. I don't usually like cheesy movies but the remake of Shakespearean piece of A Midsummer Night's Dream was a classic. Overall the year was a productive one, where I learned enough skills to be a college graduate.

DMaillart5 said...

Hunter-
I also liked when some students would learn one aspect of the Vietnam War and teach the other students about it. It was a very interesting way of learning!

Tucker-
That is such a good point about how the author created emotional bonds in Fallen Angels. Throughout the whole book I didn't want Perry, Peewee, or many of the other characters to die. Like you, I have many military interests so reading the book was extremely entertaining and really showed exactly what happened in the Vietnam War. It has been a fun year in REACH!

I most enjoyed doing Shakespeare work and working on NHD. I liked Shakespeare mainly because it was funny watching my friends make fools of themselves in front of the class, including myself. I don't particularly like Shakespeare but the book that we read and the movie were quite entertaining. If we had read one of Shakespeare’s sad darker books I would have hated it but we didn't so everything is good. I loved looking like a weirdo playing Helena in A Midsummers Night. I came into eighth grade REACH expecting to hate it all together especially working on NHD projects. Learning about the 1950s was really interesting and not nearly as boring as I portrayed it to be in my mind. The making of the NHD project itself was really fun. We were just working with our buddy talking while doing our work and stuff. I also got more familiar with using a mac book. I used to hate macs but now I love them and I feel lucky had having the chance to even use one. This experience on this project will help us students in the future, considering the fact that most eighth graders haven't made a "movie" or their own website.
I can't forget the book lay that trumpet our hands. I didn't particularly like the book but the field trip out to devil's millhopper was quite fun. Going on the trip to UF was really fun. Though we were finding sources, it was really cool to go on the campus and see all of their techy stuff and sources. The thing I hated most of this year was the civil rights part of the year. In my opinion I really think that there isn’t all thta much that needs to be improved. There is really nothing wrong with eighth grade REACH.

Leah,
Yes yes yes! I completely forgot about that. Those times were really fun.

Jared,
Eventhough we didnt make it to state or the second judging we still did absolutely amazing on NHD.

I really had found enjoyment in this year’s REACH classes and it has been my favorite classes this entire school year. This one thing that made it enjoyable to be able to learn was the ability to learn and connect with history.
The NHD project that we started at the beginning of the year was amazing and I absolutely loved it. I got to research a topic of choice and honestly researching and putting the information together is my favorite thing to do. The UF trip may have been helpful to others but for me personally it was completely useless because there was nothing I could use in it because the information was either too complicated or too general.
I had loved the Civil Rights lessons and the assignments that we did with it. Lay that Trumpet in Our Hands was a great book that we were able to relate to and find meaning with. Extracting the personalities and positions of each character in the book really helped me understand the book much more than usual. Input from other students sooner aided my understanding of the book. The emotions and themes could then be revealed as the plot and the characteristics of each person in the book merged together and ended with climax and resolution.
The videos for the Civil Rights Movement helped me understand the history the most compared to anything else. The Glogs were nice but it was a little difficult to understand some of the information, and I had a lack of knowledge of exactly how much I was actually supposed to include. But at the same time it was a very good idea since I learned much from other student’s work. The Millhopper trip was amazing because it was a time to read in a different environment in general and it helped us connect with a historical event.
The Vietnam HD video that we started with was a great foundational way to start the Vietnam section. I loved the websites that people made for the Documentary people. Fallen Angels was a book that I loved especially since we had been answered well whenever we asked a question.
Shakespeare was the best part of the whole year though. I have a particular interest in poetry and to be able to be involved with some of the best writing in the English language is quite impressive to me. I loved learning about how a genius like Shakespeare manipulated the English characters to create masterpieces out of words. Making a Shakespeare play with a modern scenario was an awesome way to get dunked into the language and experience the words for what it purely is. I just wish we were able to do more of them.

What I most enjoyed this year in REACH was NHD. I loved how we as students could be so independent and trusted by our teachers. REACH is the only class where we are allowed to use the MAC computers and actually were allowed to go to other classrooms and work on our projects. I loved how we blocked almost every day for weeks. Blocking really made REACH really open and almost free in a way. You didn’t have to ask permission to go and talk to Ms. Haro or Ms. Thomas. If you had a question you went and asked them. NHD was such a fun experience. My favorite part was adding in the pictures and correcting the audio. Doing NHD this year really made me feel as a student, independent and special because I was able to make this masterpiece and I can say I created an iMovie. Even through the hard times when our volume was broken and when Bridget and I stayed after school, came before school, and during lunch it was fun and it was definitely 100% worth it. I can honestly say if I had the chance to do another NHD project I would do it again in a heartbeat. I feel really lucky to have experienced NHD and I’ll never forget it. I was really excited when Bridget and I made it to State. State was fun and it was nice to take a trip to Tallahassee to compete against kids from all across Florida. NHD by far was the highlight of my eighth grade year and it wouldn’t have been without my amazing partner Bridget .

This year in REACH, we learned about Civil Rights,Communism and the 1950s, and Shakespear. With each new topic we did fun activites like field trips to giant diches, play rewrites, and spoofs on real life events. With everyhting we did, I learned that school doesnt have to be work work and more work, it can be alot of fun as long as you have a great teacher (two great teachers in our case) and a great class. Civil Rights and Vietnam were both hard to learn about because they were so sad but Ms. Thomas made it easy to get through because of her unique teaching style which is made up of creativity, and laughs. I really learned a lot of cool things even though we had NHD which was dreadful because our awesokme teachers made sure they squeezed in time for us to get the chance to learn. LOVE YOU MS. THOMAS AND MS. HARO!!!!

I loved this class, it was honestly one of my favorites! It was fun because you could play around and stuff but you could also get serious and help us stay focused and give us advice on what to do. Whenever we needed help you were serious but you also weren’t mean and too uptight all the time  I loved learning about the fifties, and I also loved Shakespeare. It was fun to think about what life would be like if we were in the fifties, and I’m not just saying this, I really do think so…. I think the I Love Lucy episode really helped us understand what life was like back then and what it would be like for us. Seriously it made it a lot easier to understand because it was kind of hard to imagine through just documentaries and articles and stuff. I also just loved everything we learning from the fifties. It was a really interesting time period. The whole idea of communism and how different society was, like women’s rights, was a really cool topic to learn and talk about. It was kind of cool to compare how changed America is from just like sixty years ago. Like I said, I also loved Shakespeare! I think translating his language and reading it and trying to comprehend it was really fun and interesting. However, I HATED writing in Shakespearian. UGH that was awful, please don’t make those poor seventh graders do that. I also hated NHD. I didn’t like blocking because it was really boring and I felt like I never really got a lot done, but at the same time, doing it all at home would’ve been IMPOSSIBLE. So personally, I don’t think you should make us do an NHD project because I think we could do more interesting and diverse things through regular class. I think we could learn a lot more, it would be more fun, and it wouldn’t be so boring because we wouldn’t be doing the same stinking thing every day. I just thought it was boring and a waste of class time because I feel like we were all too unfocused and bored to get anything done. I think we could have more fun and learn a lot more if we actually studied different topics instead of spending so long on one boring topic. Also, I think after NHD, we didn’t really have enough grades in the gradebook, because it was always really stressful if you missed ONE blog, because there weren’t really that many grades for you to make it up if you forgot a few and there weren’t enough make up blogs. But anyway, I love you Ms. Thomas and I’m seriously not just saying this, this one of my favorite classes! xo! Karoline

In REACH class this year, I enjoyed pretty much everything. I had a great time at the Devil’s Millhopper trip and the UF Library West field trip. The 1950s unit we learned MANY things about was probably the most fascinating. The Communism part of it was fun, and we got to watch I Love Lucy, and videos about different things in the 1950s. When we learned about Communism, it was actually entertaining to learn about how crazy people were to each other from basically one word. It was so ridiculous, that it was hilarious! It was very interesting to me though. It was fun to create a 1950s quiz with a partner, because we got the chance to feel like teachers with a bit of authority. It was an experience that we won’t get the chance to do much, and it was fun! Learning about women in the 1950s was also interesting, because since I am a girl, it was fun to learn about how women were thought of in the past. There were many different views on women back in the 1950s. I found it educational, but entertaining at the same time. I really enjoyed that part. Reading about “How to Be a Good Wife” was funny! It was crazy because we actually barely do anything of that now, and women are able to easily find husbands now without such high demands. Women are so strong and powerful now instead of staying at home, working, and taking care of the children. The Civil Rights were also interesting to learn about because we were able to make our own Glogsters, and we had a chance to pair up with somebody that we didn’t even know. It was an educational experience, with a chance to socialize with people that we don’t necessarily talk to everyday in class. This REACH year was amazing, and I am going to extremely miss it!

Addy - I have to admit that I actually did like NHD. I appreciated it as well, because it will end up helping me later on in the future.

Josh - Shakespeare was so fun! It was so entertaining to act the plays out, and watch others act them out!

Cmasio5- Thats funny because I hated the Shakespear unit because it was too hard to read....Oh well. The basic stuff was fun, acting it oput was a downer though.

SDesrocher5- I agree wioth you, REACH is so much better than the regualr classes, and NHD was fun but it was a lot of work too.

CFaulk5- Are you a Communists??? Just kidding C.J. and yes that was a fun unit and I Love Lucy was a good show too.

Kgmckaig6 said...

ASimmons5- Even though I talked about how much I hated blocking, it was awesome how much they trusted us and let us be independent. (Not saying that I enjoyed it OR that that was a smart decision on their part. Just saying it was nice to feel trusted[: )

JBarber5- Haha! The best part of Shakespeare was DEFINITELY watching my friends make fools of them selves. But I agree, the book, and especially the movie were very entertaining.

I really enjoyed this class this year. Even though we learn a lot and we have a lot of work, it’s a really relaxed atmosphere. At first I was kind of freaked out because we were starting NHD and I didn’t know what was coming with it and all the things we’d have to do and when they were due and whatnot. It kind of scared me because I didn’t know what to expect. Then I had no idea how the 8th grade REACH teachers taught and functioned compared to 6th and 7th grade REACH teachers because they had completely different ways of teaching and how things were done. But when we started the class it was so different. I think out of all my years in REACH 8th grade was my favorite. There wasn’t things constantly being handed out and due, only at the height of NHD. Then things were assigned and due a week or so later like the notes we had to do for NHD and the vocab tests. I really liked it when we left the classroom and went outside or on a field trip. It was an interesting way or learning and we learned a lot. Like when we went outside for the dot activity to learn about how people treated “communists” if they were only suspected or when we went to UF and had to make sure WE were doing work and blocking periods, otherwise it would hurt our project. Then the way 8th grade REACH works makes us more independent and prepares us for high school. My favorite thing about this year that we learned was the Shakespeare unit, because it’s something we’ve never gone over before and we got to act it out and assert ourselves in the learning process rather than just trying to memorize information for tests. I’m really glad I’m in REACH because it’s a totally different way of learning than the regular classes and going more in-depth to more information. Thank you for everything! :)

I really enjoyed visiting Devil’s MillHopper, I thought it was interesting to sit outside in nature and feel like we were in the book, in the ending scene. I do not think any other teacher would have taken us on a field trip for that. It was amazing to see the sink hole and to be with all of our friends in REACH. However I definitely think that everyone made NHD seem like it would be the end of your life, or that you wouldn’t make it through. Actually I thought it was like the best part of the year I loved blocking and seeing all of my friends in the other REACH class, I think it brought us closer together as a whole and I will miss everyone next year. In fact, NHD was my favorite part of the year. While everyone else was doing regular reading and language arts activities we were working on Mac computers and iMovies. Even though there was some stress here and there during the project, in the end I thought that I would actually miss it. I think that my favorite project, besides NHD, was the Glog. I never used Glog before and I thought it was a unique way of working on a project with Megan! Also, Shakespeare and acting out his book was more entertaining and fun then I thought it was going to be! Originally I was dreading Shakespeare after NHD, but it was the best way to spend the last part of the year. I think that even though some parts were hard to understand, if was funny to watch everyone perform. Also the writing in Shakespearean language was not as hard as I thought, and fun to act out. I hope next year my English class will be as fun as this year’s was!

This year, my favorite moment in this REACH class was the field trip to UF. I liked this because we got a feel of how we would be researching later in life. The library was huge and a whole different feel than any other I have ever been to. The library was not only full of informational books and endless websites that were insanely helpful to my topic, but the devoted people as well. The librarians helped by pointing me in the right direction as well as taking me to somewhere no one else had gone. Everyone there and all the resources I was exposed to that day, was the best jumpstart to my NHD project I could have asked for. It made my experience for the yearlong project almost fun. I wished we could have gone a second time because of how fun it was with everyone. The only thing that could have made it better would be if we didn’t have to do work that day and just explore. There are so many things I still want to experience there, but the trip this year was fun all the same. The field trip took this year over the top as one of the best REACH years I have had.

I was dreading REACH at first too. NHD is just seemed like some thing far in the distance that Mrs. Cheshire kept talking about that was really difficult. I'm really glad we did it though. It got very difficult it some parts but it ended up being a really good experience!

This year in REACH, my favorite thing that we did was the field trip to the U.F. library. It gave us countless resources to use on our NHD project that we vital. Some examples are the many books, newspapers, videos, and websites. It also was super fun to work with my partner and get out of the school, and to have lunch outside and laugh at the hareckrishnas. Another exciting thing we did was the Shakespeare unit. Not only was it fun to watch the movie, but it was also fun to act out the plays and get a new perspective of the book. The Civil rights unit was fun because, my NHD topic was part of it, and it was fun to learn new things about it and see other people’s projects. REACH was such a good experience and I would totally do it again if I had the opportunity. In the beginning of the year I was telling the 7th grades to get out while they can, and looking back at it, it changed my life for the better and I now say to go for it because it is worth it. I will miss it a lot.

Connor- I totally agree that the field trip to UF was an amazing time and a chance to learn how to research better it the future.

In REACH this year my favorite thing was going to Devil’s Millhopper. It was great to get away from school even though we did do work. Walking up and down the stairs to the restroom, and get water was also a great workout for the day. Unfortunately, it had rained before we went there so when I sat down on the wet benches my pants got wet. Fun… I also remember Hunter slipping and falling (with his jar of Nutella) while running down the stairs. He then asked me for hand sanitizer. I also enjoyed watching “Monk” and “I love Lucy.” It was a nice time to relax after NHD was over. Learning about the Vietnam War was also interesting. NHD was a very “special” part of the year. I LOVE my partner, Lena Sakalla, for putting up with me. All of those nights on Skype until 1 in the morning, coming in at lunch, afterschool, and before school really paid off. Thanks so much! I will never forget this year(: Mrs. Thomas, and Mrs. Haro you were some of the best teachers we have ever had for REACH. I am going to miss you guys!

One of my favorite things we did this year in REACH was learning about Shakespeare and reading a Midsummer Night’s Dream in class. After doing NHD, and learning about sad topics such as the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement, it was a very fun and interesting way to spend the last couple of weeks. Of course, NHD was priceless and an experience I could never forget. Learning about Earth Day in so much depth was great, and even better, working with Christie. In the beginning of the year I had no idea working with a partner would be both fun and challenging, but it was something I’ll never forget. I learned more than just facts, I learned how to work with people, especially ones like Christie, and how to manage my time doing work. Thanks so much Ms. Thomas, I had a great year!

CBassett6 said...

Throughout the year there are so many things that I have loved and that I will never ever forget. NHD is my favorite memories. I say memories because even though it is one thing, the memories that are contained in NHD is priceless. Maggie and I worked together amazing, and one day she came over to work on NHD but instead we watched videos of babies eating lemons. NHD has brought me closer to my friend and learn new things about ourselves and them. At the beginning of the year was my favorite part of the year, because we knew each other for 2 years already so when we came into 8th grade R.E.A.C.H we all were crazy and used to each other and we don’t get embarrassed easy so I felt it was funny of how Ms. Haro, and J Thomas responded to our actions. I loved the books that we read through the year, however Fallen Angels was my favorite, It was a great read and the project at the end of the book really helped me understand the book more than I would have. I am not into war books, but Fallen Angels really made me appreciate the soldiers that fought for us in that war. I feel like I have learned SO much more from doing R.E.A.C.H in 8th grade than any other year, because it did not feel like work it felt like we were hanging out with people we have known forever. This was probably the best experience and I do not think that I would trade it for anything, because no matter how hard I try I will never ever ever forget R.E.A.C.H. because it has helped me succeed in other classes and be motivated to learn and push forward. What I loved about the R.E.A.C.H environment is the need to always be the best, and the completion that everyone strives for. Everyone wants to be the best and be at the top of the class and no one is a real slacker or does not care about the school work, because everyone in R.E.A.C.H competes, but it is a friendly completion and if you to get a bad grade people are always willing to help you out in studying. R.E.A.C.H. has helped me in more ways then one and I am really thankful for having the opportunity to be in R.E.A.C.H for Three years. Thanks to amazing teachers; Ms. J Thomas, Ms. Haro, Mrs. Cheshire, Mrs. A Thomas, Mrs. Armstrong, and Mr. Bramlet they have prepared us to be the best we can be, and to cite a ton of sources. I really could not give any advice on how to teach the next year group except for the ‘Book Box’ thing where you do your favorite word. I dislike those and I don’t think that I could ask for anything changed except for that because that was just boring. Thank You SO much for this fabulous year! I could not ask for a better middle school experience. I love you Ms. Thomas and I will never ever ever forget you!

In my REACH class this year, we have experienced many fun things, although my favorite had to be our REACH field trips. Our first REACH fieldtrip was to the UF library. When I first heard about the field trip, my first thought of going to a huge library to research the Bay of Pigs Invasion was that it was going to be a dreadful and exceedingly boring trip. I really enjoyed the UF library trip, not only because it was extremely fun, but I was able to complete a lot of work. The primary sources I was able to contain at the UF library were unbelievable, and really aided me in creating a successful iMovie. Though, I did not particularly enjoy the Shakespeare unit. The reason why is because it was a more challenging unit for me. It was a challenging unit for me because analyzing Shakespeare’s language is quite difficult for me, although I did enjoy creating our Shakespearian play. This year we also read in class books. We read Lay That Trumpet in Our hands and Fallen Angels. I enjoyed reading both books, but really liked Fallen Angels. We have had many projects this year, and my favorite has been the glog. With the glog not only did I discover a new form of presentation, but I was able to research a topic I am very interested in, the civil war. REACh this year has been very fun and educational and I have loved it.

Addy- I completely agree. NHD was amazing and gave us lots of freedom.

Joey- I also agree that Fallen Angels was really fun. I really loved that book and would recommend it to anyway.

This year in REACH I had an amazing year! I could not have asked for anything better. I learned so much throughout the year. For learning about the civil rights movements to the Vietnam war to learning Shakespearean language. I would have to say that my favorite memory from this year would have to be taking all of the field trips. Also making it to state for NHD was also a blast. The UF field trip was fun because I got to learn new things about my NHD topic, and also I got to have a unique experience on the UF campus that not many others get. I enjoyed the Devil’s Millhopper trip because I got to get out of lunch, and I hadn’t been there in a long time. Also right at the beginning of the field trip I don’t remember who this happened to but at the beginning of the trip when we were waiting for everyone to get out of the bathroom so we could go down, some random girl walked up to one the students and just stated touching their face and it was absolutely hilarious!

This years REACH class was the best year for me thus far. NHD taught me alot concerning how to research better, how to create, analyze, write better, and so on. The trip I most enjoyed was the trip to Devils Millhopper, the area was a great atmosphere to read a book. The weather was pretty nice and I love the outdoors anyway. The trip made you feel like you were standing in the story and made you feel like the events where happening all around you. Our successes in NHD have provided me with the opportunity to go to nationals in Washington DC, which Charles and I are extremely excited for.

Addy- I agree, NHD was one of the best experinces I have had these three years of Middle School

Sungmin- I also agree, Lay that trumpet in our hands was a very good book and was very enjoyable to read.

MS. THOMAS- THANK YOU FOR A WONDERFUL YEAR, YOU HAVE DONE SO MUCH FOR US AND WE ALL APPRECIATE IT AND LOVE YOU. WE WILL ALL MISS YOU SO VERY MUCH. THANK YOUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :)

This year went by ridiculously fast. It was an amazing year and it’s hard to believe we did so many things. The first book we read this year, Lay That Trumpet in Our Hands, was one of the things I liked the most. It was a great book that I really enjoyed, and the trip to Devil’s Millhopper was super fun too. The Civil War unit that came with it was a sad, but also encouraging and interesting unit that I learned a lot from. This is the same with the Vietnam War and Fallen Angels. NHD took up most of the year, so it’s what I remember the most. It was a challenge, of course, but it was also a good experience that all of us will remember and learn from. I really think this year was a great last year of middle school, full of great friends and experiences.

Reach has been pretty cool this year. Better than other years. The best part is we actually did interesting things. Such as NHD, short stoies, field trips, Shakespere. The short stories were awesome becausae we could right a weird creppy story about anything we wanted. The fact that we weren't limited to a nice and happy topic was great which helps make Reach enjoyable. When we did shakespere it was really enjoyable acting it out making it alot easier to learn and understand shakespere as well as learning it. We also took great field trips during the year to Devils milhopper and The UF library. THese were cool and interesting ways to interact with the activities we were doing and helped us greatly with NHD. Strangely probably the best thing this year is NHD. We were able to create a website which few people ever get to create. In additoin we learned a lot about a topic that most people do not know much of. And it was great how our two teachers believed in us the whole year douring NHD even though our peers did not. The teachers were amazing help.

This was my only year of REACH and I have to say, it was a lot better than any other reading class I've ever been in. The busiest part of the year is NHD. You literally spend about half the year in the computer lab. It requires hours of work and determination to finish, revis and finally perfect your NHD project. After NHD you get to work on Florida Writes. After you are done with all state testing and "Lay that Trumpet in Our Hands" You start mostly on Shakespeare and poetry. This is the most fun part of the year. You get to write a poem with a group based on a topic and act it out with your group. This has been a great year and I hope everyone remembers it as I have.

This year in REACH, I have learned so many different skills, and have become more educated through my experiences. My favorite unit that we have done all year is the Shakespeare unit. It is so interesting to learn about Shakespeare’s “language” and acting out Midsummers Night Dream. It was a great book, and I obtained a lot of knowledge about the Shakespearian time period, and about the types of plays he wrote. I also enjoyed taking the field trip to the University of Florida. I gained many primary sources about my NHD topic, which included news papers and books from the time of my topic-1964. Also, I learned about the Hare Krishna’s culture. They were singing and dancing on the UF campus while we were there. NHD was also a great experience for me because I learned a lot of information about the 1964 Surgeon General’s Report. It was interesting to learn about the history of smoking, and the General’s Report. NHD gave me perspective for high school, and opened my eyes for how much work I will be doing next year. I was really glad to have the opportunity to compete in NHD as well. Recording, iMovie, the script, and all of the many hours spent working were all worth it, to know that in the end, I completed a 10 minute iMovie. Overall, REACH has been my favorite classes in all of my middle school years. It has given me the chance to work all year with my friends, and get to know new things.

Sorry Ms. Thomas, I completely forgot to do the blog when I was retaking those tests.

The year went by faster than I expected it to. Considering I got into R.E.A.C.H. in mid-November, there's not much for me to say as far as the beginning of the year, but I do know that all of the extra work out into getting into the program and maintaining it has definitely paid off over the course of these 7 months. "Lay That Trumpet in Our Hands" was a life-changing novel in my perspective (and I'm sure in everyone else's too) because it showed both views of the people being segregated and the view of the people segregating. It's interesting to understand more in depth of the topics we have learned about in R.E.A.C.H. including our NHD project. Learning about the Vietnam War has given me information I can apply in the future, about research and data. I believe the amount of work and time helps us prepare for high school by teaching us about self responsibility and work ethic. R.E.A.C.H. has been an incredible learning experience and I’m proud of what this year’s 8th graders have accomplished.
